Tehran authorities say water could run out by October
Water has been shut off for up to 48 hours in several districts of Tehran, with authorities warning that the Iranian capital could run out of water completely as early as October.
'We have to make it clear to the population that this is no longer a question of scarcity, but that we will soon have no water at all,' a spokesman for the water authority in Tehran told the ISNA state news agency on Saturday.
Mohammad-Taghi Husseinsadeh said there was no realistic solution to the crisis other than radically reducing water consumption. The government is trying to alleviate the problem by drawing water from the Taleghan reservoir in north-west Tehran. However, Husseinsadeh warned that water resources there are also limited and only expected to last until October at the latest. Tehran will then face a natural disaster. Public toilets in the metropolis have been closed and the authorities are currently unable to supply water for the irrigation of green spaces. Power outages lasting hours on end are meanwhile making air conditioning unusable even as temperatures soar to between 40 and 50 degrees Celsius.
Many Tehran residents have therefore headed to the Caspian Sea in the north of the country, where temperatures are lower. (DPA)
