Draymond Green is the winner of the NBA Hustle Award for 2024-25, the league announced Friday. The Golden State Warriors forward is a first-time winner of the award, which was created in 2017 to honor players who make "effort plays that don't often appear in the traditional box score, but impact winning on a nightly basis," according to the NBA's announcement. The league tracks "hustle stats," including deflections, loose balls recovered, charges taken, screens set and shots contested to determine the winner of the award. Interestingly, Green only ranked among the top 10 in charges drawn and contested 3-pointers, while placing in the top 20 in deflections and contested 2-point shots. Looking at the hustle stats page on one might conclude that Dyson Daniels of the Atlanta Hawks or the New York Knicks' Josh Hart should have won the award. However, Green ranked among the top 40 in all nine hustle categories, which made him the winner. At 35, he's the oldest player to win the award. Previously, Green has been among the top five finishers, including runner-up in 2017 and 2023. Green is also the second former Defensive Player of the Year to win the Hustle Award, joining Marcus Smart. Green won Defensive Player of the Year in 2017 and was a finalist for the honor this season. On Friday, Green was named the winner of the NBA's Hustle Award. According to the NBA, the award "honors players who make the effort plays that don't often appear in the traditional box score but impact winning on a nightly basis." Unlike the other end-of-season awards, the Hustle award isn't voted on. Instead, the award is issued to the player that ranks highly in nine different "hustle" categories — charges drawn, deflections, screen assists, contested 2-point shots and 3-point shots; offensive and defensive loose balls recovered; and offensive and defensive box outs. Green ranked in at least the top 39 in each of the categories. Green ranked in the top 10 of defensive box outs, charges drawn and contested 3-point shots. Green finished in front of Oklahoma CIty's Cason Wallace, Philadelphia's Guerschon Yabusele, Oklahoma City's Lu Dort and Atlanta's Dyson Daniels. Oklahoma City's Cason Wallace was second, Philadelphia's Guerschon Yabusele was third, Oklahoma City's Lugentz Dort was fourth and Atlanta's Dyson Daniels was fifth. Green and Daniels were also both finalists for defensive player of the year, which was won by Cleveland's Evan Mobley. The Hustle Award, the NBA said, 'honors a player who makes the effort plays that do not often appear in the traditional box score but help determine team success." Those stats include deflections, loose balls recovered on both ends of the floor, charges drawn, screen assists, contested shots and box-outs on both ends. It's based around nine categories in all, and Green ranked 39th or better in all of them on a per-minute basis — including second in contested 3-point shots, sixth in charges drawn, 10th in defensive box outs, 13th in contested 2-point shots and 15th in deflections. 'I witness, every single night, the incredible versatility of his defensive game and how powerful his brain is," Warriors coach Steve Kerr said earlier this month, stating his case for why Green should have won the defensive player of the year award. 'He's an amazing player and he's had a great, great year."
