Vietnam veterans raise money for statue in Davenport Veterans Memorial Park
Quad City area veterans are raising money to build a statue to honor Vietnam veterans at the Davenport Veterans Memorial Park. On Friday, Chapter 776 of the Vietnam Veterans of America took donations outside Hy-Vee 53rd and Utica Ridge Road. The group wants to raise $10,000. The veterans want to represent how they were perceived with such negativity when they came back home from the war. The statue will depict a soldier carrying another soldier on his back, with the title 'No One Left Behind.' 'The Veterans Memorial Park is a fantastic place to go, just to pause and reflect. Then for us (veterans,) we can walk over when we have the statue in place, We can see a pride in the fact that we served, we were there and after we came home and having not been received real well, have been able to rise above that,' said Rod Kjersten, Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 776 vice president elect. The group will be outside the Hy-Vee store again from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday. For more information, visit here. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. $100,000 lottery win ends man's years-long bad luck streak
CLIVE, Iowa — After several years of bad luck, a western Iowa man declares the streak is ended due to a $100,000 Iowa Lottery win. 66-year-old Bret Chickering says he has had a rough few years. 'I went through cancer, I'm three years cancer-free now,' he told the Iowa Lottery. 'I fell a year or so ago and broke my hip, had a hip replacement. And the radiation from cancer took all my teeth, and that cost me a lot.' New 'Highway Helper' at Sioux City to provide help to stranded motorists Chickering says this win took him totally by surprise, but it's hopefully the start of a new, and luckier, chapter. 'It did, which usually doesn't happen. I don't usually have that good of luck!' Chickering said. 'This helps a lot.' Chickering doesn't have any special plans for his winnings, he's going to save most of the money and continue his job at a manufacturing facility. The winning ticket was a '20X' scratch ticket purchased at the Harlan Hy-Vee, 2003 Chatburn Avenue. 20X is a $10 scratch game that features seven top prizes of $100,000 and overall odds of 1 in 3.15. Kimballton water tested safe following days of uncertainty
KIMBALLTON, Iowa — For the past couple of days, the water in this Audubon County town was not drinkable. In some parts of town on Thursday, it came out of the tap pink in color. Residents were told not to drink the water. Test results came back Friday showing the water was safe to drink. 'We had to take water samples to Council Bluffs for two days in a row, and yesterday was our last sample to take over there, and it came back that there is no bacteria in the water,' said City Councilman Thomas Lake. 'Yes, you can drink the water.' Hy-Vee stepped up with stores in Harlan and Atlantic, each bringing in hundreds of water bottles for the town of 250 people. Des Moines businesses prepare for Mother's Day 'We need to get something done, it doesn't seem like the town gets things done,' said John Nowatzki, a Kimballton resident. 'When we put up the new water tower, that's where it all started.' Nowatzki said he has not drunk water from the Kimballton system in four years. City Council members are working to get the new water system to work properly. The town installed a new water tower and water mains. The problem lately involves a filter. 'We've just run into some unexpected snags, and you know it's created a lot of hardships for our, for our people in town,' said Tony Petersen, a Kimballton City Councilman. 'They understandably get a little bit upset, and I get it, we can certainly understand why.' While the water is now drinkable, city officials are still working to make the entire system function as planned. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Charges: Rochester man accused of stabbing half-brother
Mar. 12—ROCHESTER — A Rochester man is facing two felony assault charges related to a March 10 stabbing , according to new court documents filed Wednesday, March 12. Eric Dewayne Fields Jr., 25, of Rochester, was charged in Olmsted County District Court with one count of first-degree assault that inflicted great bodily harm and one count of second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon, both felonies. The charges come two days after he was arrested in the Olmsted County Government Center parking lot for his alleged involvement in the stabbing. During his first appearance in court on Wednesday, Fields was placed on $100,000 bail with conditions. His next hearing is scheduled for March 26. According to the criminal complaint, officers responded to a report of a stabbing around 9:40 a.m. on March 10. When officers arrived at the apartment building located on the 3400 block of Kenosha Drive Northwest, a witness led them to the second floor where they saw a 31-year-old man lying on the floor of the hallway. The man told police he was stabbed by his brother. The complaint said the man was stabbed to the left side of his sternum, and blood was continuing to flow out of the wound. The man was transported to St. Marys Hospital. While in the hospital, the man said that his half-brother, Fields, slept in his home that night. The complaint said the man woke up the next morning to see that Fields was in his room "sneaking around, looking for something." After the man asked Fields what he was doing, Fields took the covers off of the man. The man rolled over on the bed, and then Fields stabbed him, the complaint alleges. The two wrestled, and the knife fell to the floor. The man attempted to get to the front door, but got tired and slid to the floor. According to the complaint, the apartment's surveillance footage showed the man leaving his apartment before collapsing in the hallway. Minutes later, Fields was seen exiting the apartment. Law enforcement determined that Fields went to the HyVee on West Circle Drive Northwest, made a phone call and was picked up by a silver Toyota Camry. Officers located the Camry parked at the Olmsted County Government Center with Fields inside. Fields was placed under arrest. When Fields spoke to police, he said he slept near the old Kmart building in southeast Rochester, denied being on the northwest side of the city at all and described the man as a "friend" rather than brother. "After being confronted by Det. Kusick with these untruths," the complaint said, "Fields claimed the incident was self-defense, while being evasive and confused about the details."
