Mass.-based burger chain to shut down more than two-thirds of its locations
It looks like Wahlbugers is hitting a wall. The nationwide burger chain, founded in Hingham by brothers Mark, Paul and Donnie Wahlberg, will close more than two-third of its locations, according to a report from Food Republic. The 79 locations that are shuttering belong to franchisee Hy-Vee Inc., a Midwestern supermarket chain that incorporated Wahlburgers kiosks in many of its stores as a replacement for its prior in-house dining option, Market Grille. Now, the chain plans to reintroduce Market Grille to its stores, according to Restaurant Business. The company's 2018 franchising deal with Hy-Vee was a significant component of its expansion. However, Wahlburgers CEO Randy Sharpe doesn't seem concerned about the development, as Hy-Vee comprised only a small portion of sales, according to Restaurant Business. 'We are growing restaurants,' Sharpe said in Restaurant Business' report. 'We're not going to be in the grocery business.' 'It's best that everyone stay in what their skill sets are and move on,' he added. The closures leave 34 locations, according to Food Republic, six of which are in Massachusetts: three in Boston (two within Boston Logan International Airport and one in the Fenway neighborhood), and one location each in Springfield, Plainville and Hingham. Outside of the United States, Wahlburgers has locations in Canada, New Zealand and Australia. The Wahlberg brothers founded Wahlburgers in 2011, and didn't expand to a second location – Toronto – until 2014. That same year, the family launched the reality TV program 'Wahlbugers,' which aired through 2019 and earned an Emmy nomination for 'Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program.' Wahlburgers Closing More Than Half of Its Locations
The popular burger chain, founded by Mark Wahlberg and his brothers Donnie and Paul, will no longer be found in Midwest grocery giant Hy-Vee stores. Wahlburgers, the burger chain founded by chef Paul Wahlberg and his celebrity brothers Mark and Donnie, announced the closure of 79 locations. USA Today reports that the shuttered restaurants were all located within Midwestern grocery giant Hy-Vee stores. The partnership between Wahlburgers and Hy-Vee played a large part in the brand's expansion, but ultimately led to overextension, say industry experts. Hy-Vee announced plans to revert these in-store eateries to its own Market Grille brand. Related: How Wahlburgers Finds Success Through Feedback This move leaves the burger chain with just over 40 remaining locations nationwide. Restaurant Business Online spoke with Wahlburgers CEO Randy Sharpe, who explained that these locations accounted for a "small portion of sales" and that the chain wants to focus more on its actual restaurants rather than what amounted to kiosks. "We are growing restaurants," Sharpe said. "We're not going to be in the grocery business." Sharpe told the outlet that the chain plans to open 15 new locations this year. It began rapidly expanding thanks to franchising, and per RDO, went from 30 locations in 2019 to 109 in 2023. The rise of the restaurant chain was captured on the reality TV show, Wahlburgers, that ran from 2014 to 2019. In 2020, Mark Wahlberg discussed the rise of Wahlburgers and how it fit into his vision of success during an interview with Entrepreneur magazine, which you can read here. Questions Linger For 2026 INDYCAR Schedule: Which Tracks Should Be Added?
As NASCAR has made some announcements about its schedule over the last several weeks, the INDYCAR paddock is awaiting word on several races for next year. Should INDYCAR return to Iowa Speedway after a sparsely attended doubleheader weekend? Will INDYCAR go to Mexico City? Those questions remain top of mind for 2026, a year for which one new event — the Grand Prix of Arlington in March — has already been announced. New events often generate buzz and excitement. The race around the Cowboys and Rangers stadiums should be a sight to see. Mexico City would be a second new race for 2026 and also an incredible sight. A Mexico race has been a major priority with the popularity of Pato O'Ward, who is optimistic about having a race at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. But going to Mexico City is more than just about O'Ward. It would be the lone place where INDYCAR would race on the same circuit as Formula 1, giving fans an idea of the similarities and the differences between the two series. One of the world's biggest cities, Mexico City would provide the exposure INDYCAR needs to help the brands of the sport's biggest names beyond O'Ward. As far as Iowa, it is a NASCAR-owned track that has been rented out by INDYCAR to host events. In other words, the track owner doesn't pay a sanction fee and then makes money by selling tickets. Instead, INDYCAR has handled the ticket sales to cover its costs of renting the track. Sponsorship revenue can also cover those costs, and after Hy-Vee ended its sponsorship of the Iowa doubleheader, that obviously impacted the weekend with no big concerts and in-market activations. It would be nice to see how Iowa could do with a single-race weekend (rather than a doubleheader). With it being so close to one of sprint-car racing's most iconic tracks (Knoxville Raceway), it only seems right that the fastest open-wheel cars race nearby. But that might be more of a desire of the heart than a sound business decision. INDYCAR needs to have ovals, and preferably a variety of them, so if Iowa is dropped, where would INDYCAR go next? Could that be Homestead? Could that be Richmond? Could that be Phoenix? All of those are owned by NASCAR and they have had INDYCAR races in their track history. Richmond would fill in a much-needed hole in the schedule, which currently doesn't have a race in the mid-Atlantic or the Northeast. A return to Pocono, where INDYCAR has seen its share of injuries and loss, is unlikely. Watkins Glen (another NASCAR-owned track) doesn't seem to be in the conversation. Thermal won't be on the 2026 race schedule. Having races at the private club near Palm Springs was intriguing, but the race lacked that big-event vibe. It makes for a great potential testing facility but not necessarily a great location for a race. INDYCAR is at its best as the anchor for a big event where people want to come and hang with friends and see fast cars. And then also the place where die-hard fans can come see and root for their favorite drivers (or against the ones they dislike most). So it needs diverse places. It needs diverse facilities. Hopefully the 2026 schedule has all of that. Bob Pockrass covers NASCAR and INDYCAR for FOX Sports. Vietnam veterans raise money for statue in Davenport Veterans Memorial Park
Quad City area veterans are raising money to build a statue to honor Vietnam veterans at the Davenport Veterans Memorial Park. On Friday, Chapter 776 of the Vietnam Veterans of America took donations outside Hy-Vee 53rd and Utica Ridge Road. The group wants to raise $10,000. The veterans want to represent how they were perceived with such negativity when they came back home from the war. The statue will depict a soldier carrying another soldier on his back, with the title 'No One Left Behind.' 'The Veterans Memorial Park is a fantastic place to go, just to pause and reflect. Then for us (veterans,) we can walk over when we have the statue in place, We can see a pride in the fact that we served, we were there and after we came home and having not been received real well, have been able to rise above that,' said Rod Kjersten, Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 776 vice president elect. The group will be outside the Hy-Vee store again from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday. For more information, visit here. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. $100,000 lottery win ends man's years-long bad luck streak
CLIVE, Iowa — After several years of bad luck, a western Iowa man declares the streak is ended due to a $100,000 Iowa Lottery win. 66-year-old Bret Chickering says he has had a rough few years. 'I went through cancer, I'm three years cancer-free now,' he told the Iowa Lottery. 'I fell a year or so ago and broke my hip, had a hip replacement. And the radiation from cancer took all my teeth, and that cost me a lot.' New 'Highway Helper' at Sioux City to provide help to stranded motorists Chickering says this win took him totally by surprise, but it's hopefully the start of a new, and luckier, chapter. 'It did, which usually doesn't happen. I don't usually have that good of luck!' Chickering said. 'This helps a lot.' Chickering doesn't have any special plans for his winnings, he's going to save most of the money and continue his job at a manufacturing facility. The winning ticket was a '20X' scratch ticket purchased at the Harlan Hy-Vee, 2003 Chatburn Avenue. 20X is a $10 scratch game that features seven top prizes of $100,000 and overall odds of 1 in 3.15.
