HC stays removal of Azhar's name from Uppal Stadium stand
Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court has temporarily halted the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) from removing Mohammad Azharuddin's name from the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium's North Stand. The single bench of Justice Pulla Karthik heard the writ petition filed by Mohd. Azharuddin challenging the HCA ombudsman's order cited a conflict of interest due to Azhar's presidency during the naming. After hearing both sides Justice Karthik directed the HCA not to proceed with removal of Azhar's name until further orders. The direction came in response to the plea filed by Azhar challenging an order issued by HCA ombudsman and ethics officer Justice V Eswaraiah, who last week held that naming the stand after Azhar during his tenure as HCA president amounted to a clear case of conflict of interest. Justice Eswaraiah had instructed the HCA to remove Azhar's name. Appearing for Azhar, senior counsel K Ramakanth Reddy said the naming decision had been in place for over five-and-a-half years; any move to reverse it now would not only tarnish the former cricketer's reputation, but also infringe on his rights under Article 21 (guarantees the right to life and personal liberty). He pointed out the delay in raising objections, stating that the complainant had remained silent for years before seeking action without justification. The counsel for the Lords Cricket Club urged the court not to grant any interim relief. He contended that the decision to name the stand after Azhar was made while he held office as HCA president, and therefore, was marred by conflict of interest. Justice Karthik directed the HCA not to take any coercive steps regarding removal of Azhar's name until next hearing. The case was adjourned for further hearing.

Telangana High Court stays removal of Mohammed Azharuddin's name from Uppal Stadium
The Telangana High Court directed the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) not to remove the name of former India captain Mohammad Azharuddin from the North Stand of the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in court's order comes in response to a recent directive issued by HCA Ombudsman Justice Eswaraiah, who last week ordered the removal of Azharuddin's name from the (Retd) V Eswaraiah, serving as HCA's ethics officer, made the decision earlier in the month after a petition was submitted by the Lords Cricket Club, a member unit of HCA. The petition accused Azharuddin of abusing his authority as the former HCA President by making arbitrary calls. The petition by the Lord's Cricket club claimed that the former India captain breached HCA rules by attending an Apex Council meeting as the former president to secure a resolution in December 2019, just a month after assuming the role of the association chief and named the North Stand after himself. Azharuddin took legal action against the decision on April 20 seeking a stay on the Ombudsman's order to remove his name from the North Stand. Azharuddin questioned the order, saying that Ombudsman's tenure had ended on February 18, 2025 and any order taken by him should be considered null and void. advertisement"I will definitely take legal recourse and will be appealing to the High Court to stay this order. It is a shame that an India captain's name is being asked to be removed," Azharuddin told PTI."As per by-laws of the association, the Ombudsman/Ethics Officer's tenure is for one year. In this case, the Ombudsman's tenure had ended on February 18, 2025 and any order passed after that period is null and void."He hasn't got extension, which can only be given during the AGM which hasn't happened. So how did he pass an order," Azharuddin played 99 Tests and 334 ODIs from 1985 to 2000 and scored 15,593 runs with 29 hundreds and 79 fifties to his name.

India's Azharuddin: ‘I regret playing cricket' after name removed from pavilion
Former India captain Mohammad Azharuddin on Tuesday said he regrets playing cricket after the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) was directed to remove his name from the North Pavilion Stand at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Uppal, Hyderabad. The directive, issued by HCA ethics officer and ombudsman Justice V. Eswaraiah, also instructs the association to ensure Azharuddin's name does not appear on any printed tickets for the ongoing Indian Premier League 2025 season. The action follows a petition from Lord's Cricket Club, a local cricket body, which raised concerns about Azharuddin's conduct during his tenure as HCA president. Allegations include favouritism, conflict of interest, and compromising transparency to serve personal interests. The ombudsman's order comes as the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium prepares to host five remaining IPL 2025 fixtures, including three home matches for Sunrisers Hyderabad and two playoffs. Azharuddin called the development a 'disgrace' and urged the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to intervene. 'What is happening is beyond comprehension and it hurts me personally,' he said. 'I was barred from contesting the HCA elections merely because I exposed corruption within the system. That truth made me a target.' As part of the petition, Lord's Cricket Club proposed renaming the stand in honour of VVS Laxman, suggesting the title 'VVS Laxman Pavilion' be adopted across all signage, tickets and official documents. Azharuddin, who led India in 47 Tests and 174 ODIs, said the situation has left him disillusioned. 'I regret playing cricket,' he stated, reflecting on what he believes is a targeted move to discredit his legacy.

Mohammad Azharuddin regrets playing cricket: Check his heartbreaking message, ‘It pains me deeply…'
India's former cricket captain Mohammad Azharuddin has expressed being in pain after the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) was ordered to remove his name from the North Pavilion Stand at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Uppal, Hyderabad. Justice V Eswaraiah, the HCA's Ethics Officer and Ombudsman, issued the directive that has left Azharuddin feeling heartbroken and prompted him to urge BCCI to take action. The controversy started when a local group called the Lords Cricket Club filed a petition with the Hyderabad Cricket Association. They claimed that Azharuddin, who was HCA president, had wrongly named the North Pavilion Stand after himself. According to their argument, it was a conflict of interest because Azharuddin made the decision without approval from the HCA's General Body or Apex Council, the key decision-making groups. Justice Eswaraiah agreed to the claim and declared in his 25-page verdict, 'The fact that there has been no ratification/modification of the decision by the General Body further strengthens the case against the Respondent No. 1 (Azharuddin), as the Respondent No. 1 has exceeded his authority to benefit himself. In consequence of my findings, a clear case of conflict of interest is made out.' The HCA has given instructions to exclude Azharuddin's name from tickets for the IPL 2025 season, with the stadium hosting five matches at the venue. Azharuddin expressed his heartbreak after the verdict, 'It pains me deeply to say this, but I sometimes regret having played cricket. It's heartbreaking to see individuals with little to no understanding of the game now in positions to teach and lead. It is a complete disgrace to the sport,' he told Gulf News. Azharuddin also believes the decision is part of a deeper vendetta. 'What's unfolding is beyond comprehension, and it hurts me on a personal level. I was not allowed to contest the HCA elections simply because I exposed the corruption within the system. That truth made me a target,' he added. Calling the ruling an injustice, Azharuddin has urged the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to intervene and help. 'I am determined to pursue legal action against this injustice, and I urge the BCCI to intervene and take appropriate action. This issue isn't isolated, Sunrisers Hyderabad also had a dispute with the association overpasses, highlighting a pattern of conflict and poor governance,' he said. Adding to Azharuddin's pain, Lords Cricket Club has urged the HCA to rename the North Pavilion Stand after VVS Laxman, a Hyderabad cricketing icon. The petition demands the stand be called the VVS Laxman Pavilion for all purposes, including signage and tickets, arguing Azharuddin's actions were 'illegal, arbitrary.'
