Telangana High Court stays removal of Mohammed Azharuddin's name from Uppal Stadium

India Today30-04-2025

The Telangana High Court directed the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) not to remove the name of former India captain Mohammad Azharuddin from the North Stand of the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Uppal. The court's order comes in response to a recent directive issued by HCA Ombudsman Justice Eswaraiah, who last week ordered the removal of Azharuddin's name from the stand.advertisementJustice (Retd) V Eswaraiah, serving as HCA's ethics officer, made the decision earlier in the month after a petition was submitted by the Lords Cricket Club, a member unit of HCA. The petition accused Azharuddin of abusing his authority as the former HCA President by making arbitrary calls.
The petition by the Lord's Cricket club claimed that the former India captain breached HCA rules by attending an Apex Council meeting as the former president to secure a resolution in December 2019, just a month after assuming the role of the association chief and named the North Stand after himself. Azharuddin took legal action against the decision on April 20 seeking a stay on the Ombudsman's order to remove his name from the North Stand. Azharuddin questioned the order, saying that Ombudsman's tenure had ended on February 18, 2025 and any order taken by him should be considered null and void. advertisement"I will definitely take legal recourse and will be appealing to the High Court to stay this order. It is a shame that an India captain's name is being asked to be removed," Azharuddin told PTI."As per by-laws of the association, the Ombudsman/Ethics Officer's tenure is for one year. In this case, the Ombudsman's tenure had ended on February 18, 2025 and any order passed after that period is null and void."He hasn't got extension, which can only be given during the AGM which hasn't happened. So how did he pass an order," Azharuddin asked.Azharuddin played 99 Tests and 334 ODIs from 1985 to 2000 and scored 15,593 runs with 29 hundreds and 79 fifties to his name.

ACA plans major cricketing push with a world-class stadium in Amaravati

VIJAYAWADA: Vijayawada MP and Andhra Cricket Association (ACA) president Kesineni Sivanath (Chinni) on Sunday announced that the ACA is committed to nurturing cricketing talent across the State through the Andhra Premier League (APL) and a series of long-term infrastructure initiatives. Addressing the 72nd Annual General Body Meeting (AGM) of the association in Vijayawada, Chinni revealed that ACA is actively working to bring international cricket matches to the Visakhapatnam stadium. As a major development, he confirmed that the Port City will host five matches during the Women's Cricket World Cup scheduled for September and October this year. He expressed gratitude to the BCCI for allocating the matches. Highlighting infrastructure expansion, Chinni said the ACA aims to establish dedicated cricket grounds in all 25 districts, in collaboration with the State government. 'Work is underway in places like Nellore and Kurnool, where ACA owns land,' Chinni added. The association also proposed that cricket clubs hold regular tournaments, a move unanimously supported by members. A new plan is in place to ensure 200 days of cricketing activity annually. 'We have requested the State government to allocate 65 acres within the proposed Sports City. Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu is keen on building a world-class stadium with a seating capacity of one lakh, making it the largest after Ahmedabad,' he said.

HC sets aside local court's gag order against media houses

Telangana High Court had set aside a gag order passed by a local court here against some newspapers, TV channels, web portals and media organisations directing them not report any defamatory content against Megha Engineering and Infrastructure Limited company and its management. A bench of Justices T. Vinod Kumar and P. Sree Sudha, allowing a batch of three appeals filed by media organisations, said the trial court's ad-interim ex-parte injunction order was 'unreasoned'. The said order was contrary to the mandate under Civil Procedure Code and hence impermissible, the Division Bench said. While passing such direction without issuing notices to the opposite parties, the court should record reasons as to why such order should be passed. The trial court passed the order but did not specify the time within which the respondents can get it vacated. This had deprived the appellants' right to file counter affidavit, the Bench observed. The two-judge bench observed that gag orders should be scrutinized though they were meant to maintain the integrity of legal proceedings. The courts should ensure that such gag orders did not infringe upon the fundamental rights like the right to free speech. These rights can be curtailed only in accordance with Article 19(2) of the Constitution of India. Citing a Supreme Court verdict, the Division Bench noted that 'freedom of speech and expression was construed to include the freedom to circulate one's views by words of mouth or in writing or through audio-visual instrumentalities. This included the right to propagate one's views through the print media or any other communication channel like radio or television subject to reasonable restrictions. The Bench also noted that the company filed the suits for damages nearly a year after the publication of news. The company also suppressed the fact that it had filed another suit in a court at Khammam seeking similar relief. This amounted to clear abuse of the process of law, the verdict said. Since the gag order was passed without adhering to established legal principles, it cannot be sustained, the Bench said.
