45-year-old man struck and killed by hit-and-run driver in Long Beach

A 45-year-old pedestrian was killed when he was hit by two cars in Long Beach on Tuesday night, one of which fled the scene. It happened at around 11 p.m. near Seventh Street and Channel Drive, according to the Long Beach Police Department. They say that the man, identified by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner as Jeffrey Krajeski, was walking across the street when he was hit by a 2024 Hyundai IONIQ 5 traveling eastbound on Seventh towards West Campus Drive, police said. That driver immediately pulled over to help the victim. "While stopped, the driver observed a black truck drive over the pedestrian she had just struck," LBPD said in a statement. That driver did not stop, instead fleeing the area. Paramedics with the Long Beach Fire Department declared Krajeski dead at the scene. Investigators have not yet declared if the first or second impact killed the victim. They also have not determined if speed, distracted or impaired driving were factors in the collision. Anyone who knows more is asked to contact LBPD detectives at (562) 570-7355.

Hyundai Canada EV Road Trip: An Electrifying Adventure to the Arctic Ocean

Starting today, Canadian Hyundai IONIQ 5 owner Patrick Nadeau will drive from Hyundai Auto Canada's head office in Markham, Ontario all the way to the shores of the Arctic Ocean, an odyssey totalling over 15,000 kilometres Along this journey, Patrick Nadeau will create VR content that will be offered at no cost to organizations fighting paediatric cancer, in connection with Hyundai Hope on Wheels MARKHAM, ON , April 24, 2025 /CNW/ - Hyundai Auto Canada is proud to announce the launch of an unprecedented road trip, "The Hyundai Canada EV Road Trip," a bold project that will take a fully electric, 2025 Hyundai IONIQ 5 all the way to the shores of the Arctic Ocean, driving through five provinces and two territories across Canada . On Thursday, April 24 th, the 100 percent electric, multiple award-winning IONIQ 5 will depart from Hyundai Canada's headquarters in Markham, Ontario , and make its way west across Canada and north to the shores of Arctic Ocean in the hamlet of Tuktoyaktuk , in the Northwest Territories . Along this journey, the vehicle will be covering over 15,000 kilometres of diverse landscapes and remote northern roads. Behind the wheel of this exceptional expedition is Mr. Patrick Nadeau , an electric vehicle enthusiast who drove his own IONIQ 5 from Québec to Mexico in 2022. That journey captivated thousands of Canadians; generating support and intrigue from the EV community and was featured in numerous media outlets. By travelling over 15,000 kilometres without using a drop of fuel, Mr. Nadeau proved that long-distance electric travel is not only possible but also beneficial in many ways. A technological and human mission This project combines both technological ambition and human purpose. It aims to demonstrate that Hyundai's EV innovation through its Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) enables long-distance travel—even in remote areas—with a fully electric vehicle. The reliable performance of the IONIQ 5, combined with Canada's rapidly growing charging infrastructure, makes possible what many once thought unachievable - a journey to the heart of the Canadian Arctic with a fully electric vehicle. Of course, a journey like this also has its challenges. As Patrick and his IONIQ 5 make their way north, access to EV charging stations will become increasingly difficult, just like the road conditions. Ferries schedules and availability are also hard to predict given the high flow of water in Spring. Hyundai Canada and Mr. Nadeau will share the realities of this road trip in multiple ways throughout. Over the course of the approximate two-month journey spanning over 15,000 kilometres, Patrick Nadeau will produce exclusive content to be shared across Hyundai Canada's official social media channels. Canadians will be invited to follow the northern adventure through weekly updates, experiencing the challenges, discoveries, and unforgettable moments alongside him. A documentary-style travelogue is also planned to showcase the journey. But the project doesn't end there. In partnership with Hyundai Hope on Wheels —a Canadian nonprofit organization committed to the fight against paediatric cancer—Patrick will also capture immersive virtual reality experiences along the way. These will be offered free of charge to multiple hospitals across the country, allowing young patients to virtually explore the Arctic from their rooms during treatment. "This project is more than just a road trip. It's a statement of purpose. We believe in an electrified future that is accessible, reliable, and inspiring for all Canadians — from urban centres to the furthest reaches of the North," says Christine Smith , director of marketing at Hyundai Canada. About the vehicle To undertake this adventure, Patrick Nadeau will be driving a 2025 Hyundai IONIQ 5 Preferred with the Ultimate package. The sole alteration made to this cutting-edge electric vehicle is a vibrant, custom wrap designed to ensure high visibility for the project throughout this journey. For the rest, the IONIQ 5 remains identical to the model that Canadians can purchase at their local dealership. "As the owner of an IONIQ 5 with over 150,000 kilometres on the odometer, I know the vehicle well enough to trust that no modifications are needed to reach my destination safely," said Patrick Nadeau . "Owning an EV is not the same as a gasoline vehicle, it requires more planning, which EV owners quickly accept and adapt to. The reward for some extra planning is worth it – the joy of instant torque, low cost of ownership, savings on charging versus gas, and a reduced carbon footprint all contribute to my reasons for going electric and for undertaking this epic adventure." The Hyundai IONIQ 5 has taken the automotive world by storm since its launch. It has won numerous prestigious awards such as World Car of the Year, World Electric Car of the Year and World Design of the Year in 2022. Closer to home, it was also crowned Utility Vehicle of the Year and Green Vehicle of the Year in 2023 by the members of the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC). For 2025, the IONIQ 5 is refreshed with numerous enhancements, including an available 84 kWh battery that allows an official range of up to 504 kilometres. Hyundai makes multi-billion dollar power play to avoid tariffs

In an announcement at the Roosevelt Room in the White House on March 24, the Hyundai Motor Group (HYMTF) , the parent company of brands like Hyundai, Kia, and the Genesis luxury brand, announced a bold $21 billion investment in U.S. manufacturing that it will spend over the next four years to increase its annual production capacity to 1.2 million cars. The announcement comes very close to an April 2 date that Trump aims to enact levies on cars from Asia and Europe. Already, he has passed 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum imports. He also confirmed that due to the substantial investment, the Hyundai Motor Group would not be required to pay tariffs on any cars it will import into the States. "There are no tariffs if you make your product in America," Trump said at the news conference. The centerpiece of the $21 billion American manufacturing package is a $6 billion steel mill in Louisiana operated by Hyundai Steel that will produce 2.7 million tons of steel each year. According to Hyundai Motor Group Executive Chairman Euisun Chung, the Hyundai Steel mill is a "key part of this commitment," adding that the new Louisiana facility would create 1,400 jobs. In its prepared statement, Hyundai said its steel mill will be efficient, as it will produce "low-carbon steel sheets" from "the abundant supply of steel scrap in the U.S." "It will serve as the foundation for a more self-reliant and secure automotive supply chain in the U.S.," Chung said. "This will be Hyundai's first-ever steel mill in the United States, one of the largest companies in the world, by the way, supplying steel for its auto parts and plants in Alabama and Georgia, which will soon produce more than 1 million American-made cars every single year," Trump added. More Business of EVs: EV market share hits record highMercedes is leading a massive overhaul of its EV businessTesla VP shares critical update on long overdue EV According to Edmunds data, Hyundai imports 52.3% of the vehicles it sells in the United States from South Korea, including those from the Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis brands. The automaker has a sizable American footprint, as it operates three vehicle factories in the States: Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama in Montgomery, Alabama, Kia Autoland Georgia in West Point, Georgia, and the Hyundai Motor Group's Metaplant outside Savannah, Georgia. Hyundai's Georgia Metaplant is the newest of the bunch. Opened in October 2024, it has a 300,000-unit annual capacity and capabilities to expand to 500,000 units. Currently, it produces the Hyundai IONIQ 5, and Hyundai plans to add five more EV models across Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis, as well as hybrid versions of their vehicles. Related: Hyundai CEO says Trump and Musk link is good for the auto industry Hyundai CEO Jose Muñoz has maintained that investing in North America is a critical part of Hyundai's strategy and that doing so will help it achieve a leadership position. In a January 2025 interview with Bloomberg, Muñoz noted that Hyundai's big stateside EV push was not a political move. It was initiated during Trump's first term as president and intended to help sell in its biggest market. "Our company took the decision to make significant investment in the USA during the first Trump administration. We haven't invested in the U.S. because of IRA or because of incentives in general. It is not a good policy to simply make an investment because of incentives, because they can come and go," Muñoz said. "We believe the U.S. market is the most important for us today and is going to be the most important in terms of not only the absolute, but also the growth. And therefore, investing and localizing is a good strategy. I think we are in a better place today than we were four or five years ago simply because the investment gives us much more flexibility." How Hyundai Motor Group is driving U.S. jobs, innovation and more

While companies race to expand U.S. manufacturing, one automaker has been building here for more than 40 years — creating jobs, driving innovation and strengthening communities. Why it's important: Hyundai Motor Group (HMG), which includes Hyundai, Kia and other affiliates, is investing more than $20.5 billion in America across industries, including mobility, parts, construction and emerging technologies. It's also created more than 570,000 jobs nationwide. That's more than the population of Baltimore. In 2024, more than 700,000 HMG vehicle s were made in America, further supporting the U.S. economy. 🚗 Hyundai Motor Group's latest groundbreaking investment HMG's newest and biggest investment — the Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA) — involves a $7.59 billion investment and is set to create 8,500 new jobs. The state-of-the-art facility in Bryan County, Georgia, is HMG's first dedicated electric vehicle (EV)and hybrid mass-production plant. Up to 300,000 vehicles are expected to be produced annually at the Metaplant. The first vehicle that rolled off the line: the 2025 Hyundai IONIQ 5, an award-winning all-electric SUV. More info: The Metaplant is an intelligent smart manufacturing facility, where AI and data-driven insights optimize every stage of production. Robots assist workers, creating a safer and more efficient environment. HMGMA is also leading the way in sustainable transportation with Hyundai XCIENT hydrogen fuel-cell trucks. These zero-emissions heavy-duty trucks transport vehicle parts from suppliers to the Metaplant. 👷 Empowering America's workforce HMGMA has already hired more than 1,000 full-time employees, known as "Meta Pros" — a name that reflects their essential role in transforming mobility and manufacturing. How it's done: To prepare workers for the smart manufacturing facility, HMGMA has partnered with four local technical colleges to offer student training programs. The Metaplant has also broken ground on the Hyundai Mobility Training Center of Georgia. The facility, opening in late 2025, will be operated by Georgia Quick Start and provide free training for employees. Meet Meta Pro Tucker Copeland. The 20-year-old from Lyons, Georgia, graduated high school in 2022 and now works at HMGMA. "There's plenty of opportunity for growth," he says. "When you step foot in here, it's going to blow your mind. If you stick with it, you'll do great. This is the future." 🤝 Contributing to the community In addition to manufacturing, HMG is also giving back to Americans and their communities. An example: Hyundai Hope On Wheels is one of the largest nonprofit funders of pediatric cancer research in the U.S. with a lifetime total donation of $250 million since 1998. The takeaway: Hyundai Motor Group isn't just building cars — it's building its future here in America. With a four-decade legacy in U.S. manufacturing, HMG is driving innovation, economic growth and community.

CT man, 4-month-old son killed in crash in Vermont involving fuel tanker during snow squall

A Connecticut man and his 4-month-old son were killed in a crash in Vermont over the weekend when the vehicle they were in rear-ended a tanker truck that was stopped behind several vehicles that had crashed or slid off the road during a snow squall. The crash occurred Saturday shortly after 9:45 a.m. on the northbound side of Interstate 91 in Rockingham near mile marker 33, according to Vermont State Police. State police said it was snowy at the time, leading to poor visibility and icy roads. Several drivers were involved in minor crashes or slid off the road as conditions deteriorated. The driver of a fuel tanker, a 40-year-old New Hampshire man, spotted the crashes and stopped behind them, according to state police. Taylor Binnington, 39, of North Haven approached the area in a 2022 Hyundai IONIQ 5 and was unable to stop in the icy conditions, rear-ending the tanker truck, state police said. The front end of the Hyundai sustained heavy damage. Binnington was pronounced dead at the scene, according to state police. His 4-month-old son, Parry Lake, who was in the rear of the vehicle, was airlifted to the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire where he later died of his injuries, state police said. The boy's mother, a 36-year-old North Haven woman, and the couple's 3-year-old son were also in the backseat. State police said they were taken by ambulance to the same hospital and were treated for injuries not considered life-threatening. The driver of the tanker was not injured. The other vehicles that slid off the road or crashed were towed or able to be driven away, state police said.
