New heatwave continues unabated in southern Europe

Temperatures have again soared across Europe. In France, on Sunday, 42 departments were put on orange heat alerts, according to French weather forecaster Météo France, with the worst yet to come as temperatures are expected to peak on Monday and Tuesday. According to the French weathercaster, from Monday onwards 46 departments will be placed under orange alert, with temperatures reaching up to 40 degrees or more in France's most southern areas such as the Hérault, a neighbouring department of the Aude, which just recently suffered one of France's worst wildfires in the past 50 years. The Var and the southern parts of the Ardèche and Drôme departments are also expecting temperatures of up to 40 degrees. Red alert in Tenerife due to impending Calima Further south, both Spain's mainland and its islands are suffering from the heat this Sunday, with 15 autonomous communities on alert, including the Canary Islands where temperatures reached 40 degrees across much of the archipelago. Adding to the heat, the island is expected to be hit by the Calima, a hot, dry wind that blows from the Sahara Desert, which reduces visibility and can cause discomfort when breathing. As a result, the Canary Islands Government's Emergency Management Agency has issued a pre-alert for the island of Tenerife, alongside the red alert already declared for Sunday. On Spain's mainland north-west region of León, six fires are currently keeping the entire province on alert, two of which are particularly serious due to their proximity to inhabited areas. In Yeres, around thirty residents have been evacuated because the fire is close to the populated area. This situation has led the Regional Government of Castile and León to declare a level 2 alert for the fire in Yeres, which directly affects the World Heritage Site of Las Médulas. Portugal remains on high alert despite bringing wildfires under control Portugal's Civil Protection has raised the state of readiness to maximum level this Sunday due to the heat and increased risk of fire. The heightened alert is expected to remain in place until midnight on Wednesday. The districts of Bragança and Vila Real, in the north of the country, will be under a red warning. Viseu, Guarda and Castelo Branco, Portalegre, Évora and Beja will be under orange warning and the remaining districts will be under yellow alert. Sunday morning broke with slight relief after a night of hell due to the fires in Moimenta da Beira and Trancoso, in the district of Viseu. More than 750 firefighters are on the scene. These two fires have been under control since 10am, but there have been flare-ups. In Vila Real, two fires with several active fronts have been reported and 700 operatives have been mobilised to the scene. In the central region, a fire broke out in Penacova and has mobilised eight aerial resources and almost 250 operatives, Civil Protection told Portuguese news agency Lusa. Due to the complexity of the meteorological conditions, the Civil Protection also announced the reinforcement of resources.

Prominent French league goalscorer Jack Vergnes passes away

One of the most prolific goalscorers in the French top flight during the 1970s has passed away. Jack Vergnes was born in Magalas, a commune in the Hérault department in Southern France, on July 21, 1948. He began his career near his place of birth at Montpellier HSC before featuring at Red Star FC, Nîmes Olympique, SC Bastia, Stade de Reims, Stade Lavallois, RC Strasbourg Alsace and Girondins de Bordeaux. Advertisement Vergnes ended his career where it all began at Montpellier before retiring in 1982. His original club announced the sad news of his passing on their X (formerly Twitter) account on Saturday. While he was a consistent goalscorer throughout his career in the French top flight, Vergnes only earned one selection for the French national team, with Georges Boulogne calling him for a match against Norway in 1971. He would find the back of the net on that occasion, helping Les Bleus claim a 3-1 triumph. One of his most notable matches came at Bordeaux in December 1978, netting a quadruple at the Parc des Princes, enabling his side to defeat Paris Saint-Germain on their home field 5-2. Advertisement While he never won a league title during his playing career, Vergnes was often effective and found the back of the net with plenty of regularity domestically. In 328 top-flight matches played in France, Vergnes scored 153 times between 1968 and 1982, which is a scoring rate of 0.47. He's currently the 21st all-time leading goalscorer in Ligue 1, netting three fewer than former Ballon d'Or winner Jean-Pierre Papin. Vergnes was 76. GFFN | Joel Lefevre

Morocco Inaugurates New Consulate Building in Montpellier

Doha – Morocco inaugurated its new consulate building in Montpellier on Monday. The ceremony took place in the presence of Morocco's Ambassador to France Samira Sitail, Montpellier Mayor Michaël Delafosse, and Hérault Prefect François-Xavier Lauch. The new facility spans 850 square meters across three floors. It includes twenty offices, two meeting rooms, archive spaces, reception areas, and parking facilities accessible to people with reduced mobility. The building was acquired in November 2024 and has since gone through major renovations. The consulate serves approximately 200,000 Moroccan citizens residing in six southern French departments. These include Hérault, Gard, Ardèche, Aveyron, Pyrénées-Orientales, and Lozère. About 160 people visit the consulate daily. 'This building is a modern proximity tool, designed to welcome our citizens with dignity and strengthen human, cultural, and economic ties with France, in accordance with Royal Guidelines,' said Ambassador Sitail during the ceremony. The new premises feature Moroccan architectural elements on the façade. The interior decoration reflects Morocco's cultural identity, creating a functional, yet warm environment. Consul General Soumia Bouhamidi described the building as embodying 'the soul of Morocco.' She called it 'a bridge between shores, a hand extended to all those who carry love for our Morocco in their hearts.' The inauguration comes just two weeks after Montpellier Mayor Delafosse's official visit to Morocco. During his trip, he met with Foreign Affairs Minister Nasser Bourita and Investment Minister Mohamed Zidane. He also led a delegation to Dakhla on April 26 to explore business opportunities in the southern region. In Dakhla, Delafosse and his team learned about major development projects and discussed a forthcoming cooperation agreement focusing on water sports, cultural exchange, and sustainable energy projects. The delegation toured the construction site of Dakhla Atlantic Port and the future site of MGH Energie, a company specializing in green hydrogen. At the inauguration ceremony, the mayor expressed his appreciation for Morocco's remarkable development dynamics and structural projects. The mayor said that the North African country is positioning itself as a 'key player' in strategic fields like renewable energies and green hydrogen, which are 'sources of inspiration' for Montpellier's public policies. The consulate's relocation from Figuerolles to Parc 2000 in La Paillade represents a 'qualitative leap' in services. 'The previous conditions were no longer favorable. We are raising the level of reception and services,' Ambassador Sitail noted. State representative Lauch also celebrated the Franco-Moroccan friendship, which 'lives, renews itself, and is built on constant exchanges and shared trust between our institutions.' He described the new consular building as 'a living bridge between two shores.' The Moroccan consulate in Montpellier is one of 17 Moroccan consular representations in France. It employs about 30 staff, including diplomats and local employees. The consulate is now located at 265 rue Maurice Béjart in Parc 2000 and is open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The ceremony concluded with a reception featuring Moroccan flavors and traditional music. The event attracted over 200 guests, including CCI President André Deljarry, Sète Port President Philippe Malagola, and former Port President Jean-Claude Gayssot. This inauguration takes place amid improving relations between France and Morocco, particularly after France's recognition of Morocco's sovereignty over the Western Sahara. 'We call each other to develop projects. It's a stimulating relationship, a growing relationship,' added Lauch. According to local officials, Montpellier hosts approximately 4,000 Moroccan students out of the 28,000 Moroccan citizens in Hérault. Outside Paris, Montpellier is the top destination for Moroccan students in France.
