Shocking moment huge GECKO fell out of tin of Lidl sweetcorn in front of terrified dad as he cooked kids' tea

Grandad John says he now checks every tin before eating GRIM FIND Shocking moment huge GECKO fell out of tin of Lidl sweetcorn in front of terrified dad as he cooked kids' tea Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) A GRANDFATHER was left with a sour taste after discovering a dead lizard in a tin of sweetcorn. John Shier, 53, was cooking a meal for his wife and son last month when he uncovered the fully preserved body of a gecko stuck to the can's lid. 6 John Shier, 53, was cooking a meal when he found the gecko Credit: John Shier 6 The dead lizard was sitting on top of the sweetcorn after he opened the tin Credit: John Shier 6 John had to do a double take after spotting the creature Credit: Paul Tonge The sales manager, of Spalding, Lincs, did a double take after spotting the seven centimetre-long creature and likened the discovery to something out of a "bushtucker trial". Pictures show the squashed lizard sitting on top of the yellow veggies and a visible imprint of the animal under the ring-pull lid. Dad-of-two John purchased the tin of Freshona sweetcorn from Lidl as part of a multipack and admitted he had some concerns over the contents of the remaining containers. Speaking to The Sun, he said: 'I thought I was on I'm a Celebrity, it was like a proper bushtucker trial challenge. 'I just wanted the sweetcorn, I didn't really want a seven centimetre gecko to go with it! 'I was just cooking at home and making a usual stir fry, which means I normally just throw everything into a wok. 'I had already added one tin of the sweetcorn, but in the process of opening the second one this thing just caught my eye. 'I did a double take and saw what was sitting right on the top of the tin. I've never seen anything like that before in my life. 'That was it after that, I didn't want to eat any of the ingredients I was eating because I couldn't be sure what was in there. None of us wanted to eat any of the food. 'It's lucky I spotted it really, I might have missed it or it could have been buried beneath the sweetcorn. Giant huntsman spider lurking in his bunch of Aldi bananas 'If I had missed that and thrown it into the meal, or if it was buried in the tin, one of us might have ended up eating it. 'It's safe to say that every tinned item I've opened since has been sieved before use.' And John accused supermarket giants Lidl of 'not taking it seriously' when they offered him a ten pound voucher after being presented with the evidence of his extraordinary find. In a statement, Lidl said: 'It is never our intention for our customers to be dissatisfied in any way. 'We take matters of this nature extremely seriously and pride ourselves on the rigorous quality assurance processes we have in place across our supply chain. 'Reports of this kind are exceptionally rare – we've received no other customer complaints, and we believe this to be an isolated case. 'Nonetheless, our Quality Assurance team is in contact with the customer directly on this matter.' He added: 'This isn't a fly or a small insect, I would understand that because they are so miniscule. 6 John was offered a measly £10 voucher after his find Credit: Paul Tonge 6 John demanded an apology from Lidl Credit: John Shier 6 He has vouched to never shop with the supermarket giant again Credit: Paul Tonge 'But this is a lizard, which is fully intact and measuring seven centimetres. 'I'm shocked at their response, I thought they would take it more seriously. 'I don't know the toxicity levels of a gecko but it could have been really poisonous. I certainly wouldn't want to take the risk of eating one. 'It's a bit of a joke. It's bad enough I could have served it to my wife or son, but one of my grandchildren could have been eating that meal. 'I spend money in that store religiously every week and there is no recognition of my loyalty in their response. 'I have been offered a measly ten pound voucher. I'm not sure if I'm more disgusted at the lack of empathy or the ridiculous gesture. 'I will not be shopping there again.'

Nigel Farage is trying to restrict your abortion rights, as Reform UK gains political momentum

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage has suggested that he wants to reduce the abortion limit. Former I'm a Celebrity contestant Farage, 61, told onlookers at a news conference that he believed the law - in which you can have an abortion up to 24 weeks of pregnancy - 'was totally out of date." He added that he wants to make it 'easier for women to have children' after announcing he would scrap some taxes and the two-child benefit cap, should be be given the keys to Number 10. However, experts have labelled his plans as "fantasy economics' which have not been properly costed and accounted for – highlighting that his statements may sound good on paper and are easy to say when you're not actually the party in power, balancing the books. 'I am pro-choice, but I think it's ludicrous, utterly ludicrous, that we can allow abortion up to 24 weeks,' Farage said at the conference. 'And yet, if a child is born prematurely at 22 weeks, your local hospital will move heaven and earth and probably succeed in that child surviving and going on and living a normal life. So I believe there is an inconsistency in the law. I believe it is totally out of date.' Less than 1% of abortions are thought to happen in the later stages of a pregnancy, according to government data. Experts in the abortion space say they are concerned that should Farage one day get power, 'floating the idea of reducing the time limit' is just the start. 'The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists has always said there is no case for reducing the abortion time limit and every single reputable medical body and reproductive health expert agrees,' Louise McCudden, MSI Reproductive Choices' UK Head of External Affairs, told Cosmopolitan UK. 'The vast majority of abortion procedures take place under 10 weeks. However, there are women for whom access to abortion care at 22 weeks is absolutely critical, including when medical complications occur in a wanted pregnancy, forcing women to make incredibly tough decisions very quickly.' Abortion is legal in England, Scotland and Wales, but only if strict caveats are met. Two doctors need to agree that it would cause less harm to the woman's physical or mental health, or the health of existing children, than continuing the pregnancy before 24 weeks. After 24 weeks, abortions are generally only permitted if the woman's life is at risk or if there is a severe fetal abnormality. 'The legal limit for an abortion is 24 weeks' gestation. This is the point at which the fetus is viable outside the woman's body,' states the government. 'Abortions may be performed after 24 weeks in certain circumstances - for example, if the woman's life is at risk or the fetus would be born severely disabled. 'Abortions where gestation is 24 weeks or over account for a very small number of abortions (0.1% of the total). There were 260 such abortions in 2022.' Farage has previously suggested that there should be a debate about the maximum gestation period for abortion to be permitted. When he announced former Conservative MP Andrea Jenkyns had broken ranks to become Reform UK's newest recruit in November, Farage said: 'Is 24 weeks right for abortion, given that we now save babies at 22? That to me would be worthy of a debate in parliament but should that be along party lines? I don't think so.' Cosmopolitan UK has contacted Reform UK for comment. Farage's comments come as Cosmopolitan UK has partnered with leading abortion provider BPAS to campaign to 'End 1861' and call for urgent law reform that would decriminalise abortion in England and Wales. It hopes to see the rare cases, like Nicola Packer's, to be treated with compassion rather than prosecution. A BPAS spokesperson told Cosmopolitan UK: 'We do agree with Nigel Farage on one point - that our abortion law is out-of-date. Currently, under a law passed in 1861 - before women even had the right to vote - abortion remains a crime in England and Wales. Alongside medical bodies and women's rights organisations, we are backing Tonia Antoniazzi MP's cross-party amendment to the Crime and Policing Bill which would reform our archaic legislation by removing women from the criminal law in relation to ending a pregnancy. This is the right way to update our abortion law - through compassionate, considered reform, not through the imposition of cruel restrictions.' 'I put myself up for Strictly every year but never get chosen by producers'

'I put myself up for Strictly every year but never get chosen by producers' Bucks Fizz star Cheryl Baker has been wanting to join the cast of Strictly Come Dancing for years Bucks Fizz star Cheryl Baker has revealed that she signs up for Strictly Come Dancing every year, only to face rejection from the show's producers. Cheryl notably won the Eurovision Song Contest back in 1981 with her Bucks Fizz co-stars, Bobby G, Mike Nolan and Jay Aston. She now performs with bandmate Jay, alongside Nikk Mager and Matthew Pateman as The Fizz. Speaking exclusively to Slingo, Cheryl expressed her fondness for the renowned BBC dance programme, despite not yet getting the nod from its producers. "I'd love to do Strictly. I always put myself up for it every year, and they always say no, which is a great shame. I love dancing - I'm not a trained dancer, but I love dancing," she divulged. "I would love to go do I'm a Celebrity - I would love that. I would also love to do Traitors," she declared. "When I knew there was going to be a celebrity one, I contacted my agent and said, 'Get me on it!' When she told me that they'd already cast it, I was gutted. I can't wait to see it, but I'd do any of them. "That's the way TV has gone. If you don't want to be on any of those shows, it really limits you to what you can do, because that's what's on TV now. "I miss Top of the Pops - I wish they'd bring it back. All the young artists now, they've got a televisual platform to show how good they are." Bucks Fizz won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1981 (Image: Getty Images ) Country pop trio Remember Monday tried to emulate Bucks Fizz's success at this year's Eurovision Song Contest with their track, What the Hell Just Happened? After the jury vote placed them tenth, the UK group unfortunately scored zero points from the public vote, resulting in a 19th place finish – just one spot lower than Olly Alexander's position last year. On whether she'd return to Eurovision with The Fizz, Cheryl remarked: "I mean, we've got our two new guys, they're great singers and if the cameras are far enough away... I'd hate for them to do camera close ups of Jay and I, and go, 'They're getting on a bit!' "I feel vocally we're stronger now than we have been for years, because there's four of us and the boys are tremendous but I don't think we could do Eurovision again." Ant and Dec's wax figures return to Madame Tussauds Blackpool after makeover

Presenters Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly's wax figures have been returned to Madame Tussauds Blackpool after undergoing a transformation. Originally unveiled in 2016, the I'm A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! presenter's figures were taken away for a makeover in September and are now back on display at the Promenade attraction. The Geordie duo, popularly known as Ant & Dec, sat for the revamp of their wax figures, which have been updated with a current, up-to-date look. The pair are on display among I'm a Celebrity memorabilia including a Bush Tucker Trial sign, a winners wall and artefacts from the programme. Madame Tussauds Blackpool is home to more than 80 crafted wax figures, including Freddie Mercury, The Beatles, Sir David Attenborough and Harry Styles. Madame Tussauds wax figures typically take a team of around 20 skilled artists three to four months to make and involve more than 200 different measurements being taken, as well as every hair being inserted individually by hand. Jenn McDonough, general manager at Merlin Entertainments plc, said: 'We are delighted to welcome Ant and Dec's wax figures back to their Blackpool home. 'As fan favourite figures, their return has been eagerly anticipated by visitors and locals alike, and we are excited for visitors to see their new, updated look.' Ant & Dec first met as child actors on CBBC's drama Byker Grove and performed together as pop musicians PJ & Duncan. The duo have since pursued careers as television presenters, and currently host I'm a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!, Britain's Got Talent, and Limitless Win.
