'I put myself up for Strictly every year but never get chosen by producers'
Bucks Fizz star Cheryl Baker has been wanting to join the cast of Strictly Come Dancing for years
Bucks Fizz star Cheryl Baker has revealed that she signs up for Strictly Come Dancing every year, only to face rejection from the show's producers.
Cheryl notably won the Eurovision Song Contest back in 1981 with her Bucks Fizz co-stars, Bobby G, Mike Nolan and Jay Aston.
She now performs with bandmate Jay, alongside Nikk Mager and Matthew Pateman as The Fizz.
Speaking exclusively to Slingo, Cheryl expressed her fondness for the renowned BBC dance programme, despite not yet getting the nod from its producers.
"I'd love to do Strictly. I always put myself up for it every year, and they always say no, which is a great shame. I love dancing - I'm not a trained dancer, but I love dancing," she divulged.

Aside from Strictly, Cheryl is keen on exploring further opportunities within reality TV shows, including I'm a Celebrity or Celebrity Traitors, reports Edinburgh Live.
"I would love to go do I'm a Celebrity - I would love that. I would also love to do Traitors," she declared.
"When I knew there was going to be a celebrity one, I contacted my agent and said, 'Get me on it!' When she told me that they'd already cast it, I was gutted. I can't wait to see it, but I'd do any of them.
"That's the way TV has gone. If you don't want to be on any of those shows, it really limits you to what you can do, because that's what's on TV now.
"I miss Top of the Pops - I wish they'd bring it back. All the young artists now, they've got a televisual platform to show how good they are."

Country pop trio Remember Monday tried to emulate Bucks Fizz's success at this year's Eurovision Song Contest with their track, What the Hell Just Happened?
After the jury vote placed them tenth, the UK group unfortunately scored zero points from the public vote, resulting in a 19th place finish – just one spot lower than Olly Alexander's position last year.
On whether she'd return to Eurovision with The Fizz, Cheryl remarked: "I mean, we've got our two new guys, they're great singers and if the cameras are far enough away... I'd hate for them to do camera close ups of Jay and I, and go, 'They're getting on a bit!'
"I feel vocally we're stronger now than we have been for years, because there's four of us and the boys are tremendous but I don't think we could do Eurovision again."

She added: "We do lots of other festivals and 80s weekends. It's great fun, I love it... It's such a boost to your ego!"

Gordon Ramsay makes his true feelings known towards future son-in-law Adam Peaty

Olympic swimming legend Adam Peaty took on his toughest challenge yet, with future father-in-law Gordon Ramsay in full support. On Sunday, the 30-year-old pushed through a brutal triathlon, surrounded by a very famous cheer squad. The Strictly Come Dancing star, who has six Olympic medals under his belt, dived into his first-ever triathlon as part of the T100 Triathlon World Tour. Unsurprisingly, he was surrounded by his biggest supporters both in and out of the water as 'Team Ramsay' were on hand for the event. His fiancée, Holly Ramsay, was there to cheer him on, along with his young son George, who beamed with pride throughout the day. The Ramsay family was out in full force – Holly's mum, Tana, and siblings Megan, Tilly, and Jack all participated in the event alongside him. Gordon, 58, had hoped to take part himself but was benched by doctors after getting stitches in his cheek – but he more than made up for it with enthusiastic sideline support. It was a big day filled with famous faces, with McFly drummer Harry Judd and former racing driver Billy Monger also among the competitors. The triathlon was no joke – a 2km swim, an 80km cycle, and an 18km run made up the punishing course. Adam powered through and crossed the finish line in 2 hours, 34 minutes, and 37 seconds, collapsing into a hug from his proud loved ones. Moments after the triathlon ended, George ran up to his dad with a handmade sign that read 'I love you. Go Daddy', and gave him a kiss. Holly was glowing with pride as her future husband caught his breath. 'That was the hardest thing I've ever done,' Adam said afterwards, before adding: 'I'd 100% do it again.' Reflecting on the experience, he later shared on Instagram: 'Before this I never raced for more than a few minutes, never swam open water, never raced on a bike or had ever done a 10km run with people of all paces around me. Glad I got all of those ticked off today.' Adam's relationship with Holly began in 2023, and the Olympian popped the question last Autumn. While the couple initially kept things quiet, it was Gordon who let the wedding plans slip during an interview on The Jonathan Ross Show. 'It's going to be a Christmas wedding,' he said, revealing they'd already started scouting venues and making arrangements. The celebrity chef went on to praise Adam, calling him a down-to-earth, driven man and the ideal match for his daughter. Gordon shared that Adam had asked for his and Tana's blessing during a family trip to Cornwall, describing the moment as emotional and unforgettable. 'As a future son-in-law, we couldn't ask for better,' he continued, clearly touched by the swimmer's sincerity. The feeling is mutual, as Adam has spoken openly about how welcomed he feels by the Ramsay family. And yes, Gordon is already planning the wedding menu – something Holly says he has been excited about from day one. 'He's definitely taking charge of the food,' she told Closer Magazine, laughing about her dad's enthusiasm for the big day. Holly first shared news of their engagement with an emotional Instagram post, calling Adam her 'best friend' and saying she still remembers the smile she had after their first date. She thanked him for making her feel 'loved, seen and happier than ever' and said she couldn't wait to become his wife. Adam posted his own heartfelt message soon after, calling Holly 'gentle, caring and beautiful,' and saying he felt like the luckiest man alive. More Trending He also spoke about how close he's become to her family, describing their warmth, support, and generosity as something he's incredibly grateful for. Now, with wedding bells ringing this Christmas and triathlon medals added to his collection, Adam seems to be entering a brand new chapter – on both the podium and in his personal life. Between gruelling training, new athletic goals, and a growing family, he has embracing it all with humility and heart. For a long time, I quite liked the bloke-ish bonhomie of the 'classic' Top Gear, with Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond. I didn't particularly mind Clarkson's near-to-the-knuckle jokes, dodgy comments about truck drivers or his dismissal of climate change. He could sometimes make me laugh – and you can't agree about everything. However, his horrendous 'slope' remark – about an Asian man on a bridge they had built over the River Kwai – and his decision to punch a Top Gear producer because of the lack of hot food after a day's shooting both created a sour taste that has lingered. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad It wasn't just the potential racism of the slur. It was also the fact that this was a man who had laboured alongside them; it was a sneering betrayal. And as someone who has worked with people known, in all seriousness, as 'the talent' – who were sometimes anything but and comically so – I almost felt that highly entitled punch myself. READ MORE: Demise of hybrid cars in Norway shows how UK is falling behind in technological race Jeremy Clarkson has been a vocal campaigner during farmers' protests about Labour's changes to inheritance tax but is also voicing the concerns of many about the effects of the changing weather on food production (Picture: Carl Court) | Getty Images Clarkson facing 'catastrophic' harvest But Clarkson is still not without redeeming features, including a willingness, for all his bombastic on-screen persona, to change his mind. In 2019, he revealed he had encountered a 'graphic demonstration of global warming' after getting stuck on a boat in a dried-up river in Cambodia. He told The Sunday Times: 'It's the first time that we've ever admitted to there being global warming. It was alarming, genuinely alarming.' More recently, his Prime Video show, Clarkson's Farm, appears to have done a great deal to educate people about the reality of farming and has also revealed a different side to his personality. Last year, while rather optimistically suggesting 'science will solve it eventually, always does', Clarkson told the Guardian that working on his farm, Diddly Squat (a great and very 'Clarkson' name), had made him realise that the effects of climate change were 'happening really fast'. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'That's what always surprises me. In the last five years, I've noticed a dramatic change here... It hasn't snowed for five years. We probably get a minute of sleet. We used to get snowed in every year,' he said. While saying this, he apparently smirked and said to his interviewer 'I'm like a Guardian reader's wet dream, aren't I?' – a remark that sounds like a jibe but is begrudgingly conciliatory to people he normally disagrees with. On Friday last week, he wrote on social media: 'It looks like this year's harvest will be catastrophic. That should be a worry for anyone who eats food. If a disaster on this scale had befallen any other industry, there would be a lot of wailing and gnashing of teeth... Normal weather would help. It never stopped raining in 2024 and never started in 2025.' Many farmers have been hit by floods, drought or both in recent years (Picture: Carl Court) | Getty Images Farms hit by extreme weather It is a message that many farmers would like the rest of us, particularly those living in cities, insulated as we are from the realities of food production, to hear. A survey published last month by the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) found that 86 per cent of farmers had been affected by extreme rainfall, 78 per cent by drought and more than half by heatwaves. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Just 2 per cent had not experienced some kind of extreme weather. Some 84 per cent had experienced a reduction in crop yields or livestock output, and three-quarters had seen a fall in their incomes. Tom Lancaster, the ECIU's land, food and farming analyst, said: 'Farmers are on the front line of climate change and this research reveals what impact that is having on them and their businesses. From lost crops and livestock to soil erosion, farmers are battling these impacts across more fronts than most with repeated heatwaves, droughts and periods of extreme rainfall all taking a toll on farmer confidence.' This, he said, called the UK's food security into question. 'We need to be taking these risks more seriously, with more support for farming to adapt and build resilience, as well as more urgent action to help farmers reduce their own emissions.' Global food prices set to rise Similar problems are being faced by farmers all over the world. In a study published in June by the leading journal Nature, Stanford University academics estimated that, for every degree Celsius of global warming, the world's ability to produce food would fall by 120 calories per person per day. One of the researchers, Professor Solomon Hsiang, warned that 'when global production falls, consumers are hurt because prices go up and it gets harder to access food and feed our families'. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad It is currently thought the world is on track for about 2.7C of warming by 2100 – well above the 1.5C and 2C limits suggested by scientists to avoid 'dangerous' consequences. Unless and until we reduce carbon emissions to net zero, our climate will keep on getting hotter, less temperate and less benign. While many viewers, including me, may have thought that Clarkson was being himself on Top Gear, he has spoken about playing a caricature of himself, 'a comic creation'. However, his Clarkson's Farm persona seems more like the real person and, fortunately, that is someone who, when confronted by the reality that our climate really is changing, is able to see it for what it is. Ironically, his Top Gear character may help him persuade people – who, for various reasons, are still reluctant to accept that climate change is a problem – to face the increasingly obvious facts that farmers are confronted with on a regular basis.

Alex Kingston gets seal of approval from Strictly Come Dancing pro - 'Extremely cool'

Strictly Come Dancing has announced six celebrities who will be hitting the ballroom later this year, but one in particular has excited professional dancer Dianne Buswell Strictly Come Dancing's Dianne Buswel l has branded a 2025 contestant 'extremely cool' as Doctor Who enthusiasts were left 'screaming' following a major announcement. ‌ With mere weeks remaining before the annual BBC programme kicks off, the initial quartet of celebrities were unveiled on Monday (August 11). ‌ The opening reveal caught supporters off guard as Harry Aikines-Aryeetey was disclosed during an instalment of children's news show Newsround. Known as Nitro, Harry is most famous for taking part in the Bradley and Barney Walsh edition of Gladiators. ‌ Additionally, Harry is a multiple gold medal-winning Team GB sprinter, who became the first competitor to secure gold medals in both 100 and 200 metres at the World Youth Championships. "After the Christmas Special, it was so nice I just had to do it twice! I'm so excited to be part of the Strictly family this series and I'm ready to give it all I've got. I'll be bringing tons of energy to light up the dance floor. Let's hope I'm as quick picking up the routines as I am on the track," he said. Later during the evening, Strictly enthusiasts were urged to watch The One Show as three additional contestants were being revealed by Roman Kemp and Alex Scott. ‌ The opening member of the trio disclosed was Love Island champion Dani Dyer, with the daughter of EastEnders icon Danny Dyer wed to Jarrod Bowen. On joining Strictly Come Dancing, Dani said: "Getting the opportunity to be on Strictly is the second most amazing thing I've done this year! I feel very very blessed and cannot wait to get my dancing shoes on." The third and final celebrity revealed on the magazine programme was Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, a former footballer who represented Leeds United, Atlético Madrid and Chelsea during his playing career. ‌ Following his retirement, Jimmy has established himself as a recognisable figure in football commentary for leading UK sports broadcasters, taken charge of clubs including Burton Albion and Northampton Town and worked as an assistant coach with the England national squad. "Swapping the pitch for the ballroom is certainly not something I've done before but I'm looking forward to tackling a fun challenge! Bring on a new type of footwork, with hopefully no own goals," he joked. Nevertheless, it was the reveal of Doctor Who icon Alex Kingston that seems to have generated the greatest buzz across social media platforms. ‌ Following her rise to fame on the medical drama ER as Dr Elizabeth Corday, Alex went on to portray one of the legendary sci-fi programme's most beloved characters. Featured on Doctor Who from 2008 to 2015, Alex brought River Song, aka The Doctor's Wife, to life alongside three different Doctors on television and remains active in audio adventures and literary works. Alex has also appeared in Douglas Is Cancelled, Treason, Gilmore Girls, Boudica, Lost in Austen, Dodger, A Discovery of Witches, Law and Order: Special Victims Unit, and Arrow. Her impressive theatre credits include portraying Lady Macbeth and Nurse Ratchet in One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest. On the official Strictly Instagram page, Dianne, who claimed the Glitterball Trophy with blind comedian Chris McCausland last year, captured everyone's sentiments. She posted: "Extremely cool love this!" To which Alex, who is presently in Italy, responded: "So excited to get dancing!". ‌ Adding to the praise was Motsi Mabuse, who penned: "Welcome to the Strictly family, Alex! Can't wait to see your personality shine on that dance floor, here's to sparkle, rhythm, and unforgettable moments! Woop Woop." Countless Doctor Who enthusiasts couldn't hide their delight as they anticipate discovering whether Alex excels at dancing as much as she does at fighting aliens. @bobby_seagull declared: "Was such a big fan of hers on Doctor Who!" @mommagledders shared: "I love her so much! She would be great with Johannes!". @stephlhulme penned: "Ahhh! I am a big Whovian and this announcement has made my day." @richardfrankscomedy noted: "Such a cool signing." @giselle_barajas1234 exclaimed: "DOCTOR WHO FANS ARE SCREAMING. YES ALEX." @calum_creates suggested: "I know it's been done before, but please can Alex dance to the Doctor Who theme!"
