'I put myself up for Strictly every year but never get chosen by producers'
'I put myself up for Strictly every year but never get chosen by producers' Bucks Fizz star Cheryl Baker has been wanting to join the cast of Strictly Come Dancing for years Bucks Fizz star Cheryl Baker has revealed that she signs up for Strictly Come Dancing every year, only to face rejection from the show's producers. Cheryl notably won the Eurovision Song Contest back in 1981 with her Bucks Fizz co-stars, Bobby G, Mike Nolan and Jay Aston. She now performs with bandmate Jay, alongside Nikk Mager and Matthew Pateman as The Fizz. Speaking exclusively to Slingo, Cheryl expressed her fondness for the renowned BBC dance programme, despite not yet getting the nod from its producers. "I'd love to do Strictly. I always put myself up for it every year, and they always say no, which is a great shame. I love dancing - I'm not a trained dancer, but I love dancing," she divulged. "I would love to go do I'm a Celebrity - I would love that. I would also love to do Traitors," she declared. "When I knew there was going to be a celebrity one, I contacted my agent and said, 'Get me on it!' When she told me that they'd already cast it, I was gutted. I can't wait to see it, but I'd do any of them. "That's the way TV has gone. If you don't want to be on any of those shows, it really limits you to what you can do, because that's what's on TV now. "I miss Top of the Pops - I wish they'd bring it back. All the young artists now, they've got a televisual platform to show how good they are." After the jury vote placed them tenth, the UK group unfortunately scored zero points from the public vote, resulting in a 19th place finish – just one spot lower than Olly Alexander's position last year. On whether she'd return to Eurovision with The Fizz, Cheryl remarked: "I mean, we've got our two new guys, they're great singers and if the cameras are far enough away... I'd hate for them to do camera close ups of Jay and I, and go, 'They're getting on a bit!' "I feel vocally we're stronger now than we have been for years, because there's four of us and the boys are tremendous but I don't think we could do Eurovision again." Eurovision's Cheryl Baker rules out retirement as she shares huge announcement
EXCLUSIVE: Cheryl Baker won Eurovision with the band Bucks Fizz at the 1981 Eurovision Song Contest and the 71-year-old singer has no plans on slowing down just yet The Fizz are working on a biopic 44 years after Bucks Fizz won the Eurovision Song Contest, Cheryl Baker has confirmed. Cheryl, Mike Nolan, Jay Aston and Bobby G helped the UK claim their fourth win in the competition with upbeat pop tune Making Your Mind Up back in 1981. Since their victory, the group has had numerous members and around 15 line-up changes as well as evolving into to spin-off act The Fizz due to a dispute between the original members. Cheryl and Jay now perform as The Fizz alongside Nikk Mager and Matthew Pateman after Mike decided to leave the group last year citing personal reasons. Bobby G left Bucks Fizz due to a complex mix of factors, including a desire for a solo career, disagreements over the band's name, and a legal dispute with other members Speaking at the WhichBingo Awards, Cheryl opened up about her future plans and confirmed some exciting news for fans, revealing "Someone is making a documentary of us." She continued: "They have been filming us, including Mike Nolan's last gig, so hopefully in the not to distant future you'll be seeing a biopic of Fizz. How great is that?" Cheryl went on to reveal that the group has a new "lease of life" with Nikk and Matthew joining her and Jay. She explained: "The beauty now I think is we're not chasing the charts because back then everything was about the charts, promoting new singles, promoting a new album plus other people were putting everything together. "We were like four puppets to be honest in the 1980s and now we're in control of our own destiny and we still record but we record what we want, when we want. The gigs we do are so much fun. "I must big up Matthew and Nikk who've joined me and Jay from Bucks Fizz because they are fabulous and their voices are wonderful as well as their energy and enthusiasm, and it ups your game when you're working with people that are so good. It's like a new lease of life with for the band and I'm really enjoying it." Despite being in show business for over four decades, Cheryl, 71, confirmed she has no plans to retire. Sharing the secret behind her successful career, she said: "By keeping working and keeping your name in the frame. UK Eurovision icon reveals the secret to winning and it doesn't involve singing
According to one Eurovision Song Contest legend, the secret to victory isn't actually singing. Cheryl Baker represented the United Kingdom with her band Bucks Fizz in 1981 and achieved something we've only done five times—winning. Their lively tune Making Your Mind Up proved a real hit at the live Grand Final in Dublin, Ireland, and scored 136 points, while Germany's Lena Valaitis came second with 132. This is, of course, a stark contrast to the results of more recent years, where the UK and Germany, both countries in The Big 5, have ended up on the lower part of the leaderboard. Hoping to rectify that, however, is Remember Monday, the three-piece girl group representing the UK for 2025 with their theatrical number, What The Hell Just Happened? While members Lauren Byrne, Holly-Anne Hull, and Charlotte Steele have delivered flawless vocals in every live performance thus far, though, Cheryl admits that it isn't all about being in tune. In a new interview, the 71-year-old reflected on her Eurovision glory, where the winning routine saw male band members Mike Nolan and Bobby G rip off Cheryl and Jay Aston's skirts to reveal mini-skirts underneath. 'Bucks Fizz wouldn't have won without the skirt rip, so thank goodness for that,' Cheryl said while attending the WhichBingo 2025 Awards in Gibraltar. She continued to The Mirror: 'You've got to have the skirt rip moment. Something that makes it different from the others. 'You can have the best singer and have the best song, but you've got to have that something that makes everyone think, 'Wow, I want to see that again'.' On what that might be exactly, Cheryl said: 'It might be special effects, it might be lighting, but it's the something that makes it special.' Asked what she reckons the UK's chances are this year, Cheryl praised the 'great' musical theatre performers for their 'perfect' singing, predicting that we'll end up on the left-hand side of the scoreboard. 'However, I have never yet chosen a winning song,' she added. 'I always choose a song I think is the best, so I like to think they are going to be a dark horse and come up maybe in the top five, but I just don't know.' Since her Eurovision stint, Cheryl has continued to be a regular on our screens, whether it be via presenting or various rebrandings of Bucks Fizz. In 2016, The Fizz was born as a spin-off of the original foursome, comprising Cheryl, Jay, Nikk Magaer, and Matthew Pateman. To date, they've released four albums, three of which have charted in the Official UK Albums Chart. Original star Mike, now 70, did appear in the lineup, but he was replaced by Bad Boys Inc. star Matthew and Phixx member Nikk last year. As for Eurovision 2025, the contest is being held in Basel, Switzerland, after Nemo's win with The Code last year. Speaking ahead of the final, Remember Monday teased plenty of 'drama and theatrics' for their 'pink and girly' performance, the staging for which includes a fallen chandelier. 'We obviously want it to be a surprise on the night, but what we can say is that we are leaning into our musical theatre backgrounds, that is for sure, and we just hope that audiences love the staging and design as much as we do,' said Charlotte. More Trending Currently, the bookies have Sweden's KAJ, with their song about saunas, Bara Bada Batsu, as the favourites to win. Other countries expected to do well are Austria and France, while Remember Monday currently have just a 1.6% chance of lifting the trophy. The country-pop trio will perform eighth tonight, when they'll be looking to channel the past victories of Sandie Shaw (1967), Lulu (1969), Brotherhood of Man (1976), Bucks Fizz (1981), and Katrina & The Waves (1997).
