Varanasi: IIVR's vegetable-based farming model boosts farmers' income

VARANASI: The vegetable-based Integrated Farming System (IFS) model developed by the ICAR-Indian Institute of Vegetable Research (IIVR), Varanasi, and supported by UPCAR, Lucknow, is proving beneficial for farmers. To review the model, , Director General of the Uttar Pradesh Council of Agricultural Research (UPCAR), Lucknow, along with Parmender Singh, Deputy Director General, visited the institute on Thursday and appreciated the progress of the project. Sanjay Singh said that this integrated farming system is capable of strengthening the livelihood of small and marginal farmers. The system developed by the institute integrates diverse components such as aquatic vegetable production like water chestnut, lotus, water spinach, vegetable seed production, livestock rearing, poultry farming, vermicomposting units, and beekeeping, thereby creating multiple sources of income. The principal investigator of the project and Principal Scientist, Rakesh K Dubey, said that under this vegetable-based integrated farming system, farmers are able to generate an annual income of up to ₹6.5 for every ₹1 invested per acre. In addition to this, the model also ensures nutritional security, better utilisation of resources, and water conservation. Selected farmers under the project will also receive technical guidance and training. By adopting this model, farmers can significantly improve their economic condition. The Director General of UPCAR suggested that this model should be replicated in other districts of the state, and cluster-based training programmes should be organised to reach a larger number of farmers. He expressed satisfaction with the project's performance, congratulated the team, and termed it a strong step toward self-reliance in agriculture.

VARANASI: A three-day grafting training programme conducted at the ICAR-Indian Institute of Vegetable Research (IIVR), Varanasi, was inaugurated by Sanjay Singh , Director General of Uttar Pradesh Council of Agricultural Research (UPCAR), Lucknow, on Thursday. A total of 25 progressive farmers participated in the training, including 18 from Uttar Pradesh, 2 from Bihar, 2 from Jharkhand, and 3 from Madhya Pradesh. During the training, participants were provided with in-depth technical knowledge on media preparation, grafting techniques, healing processes, acclimatisation, and transplanting of grafted seedlings. Speaking on the occasion, Sanjay Singh encouraged the participants to utilise the training knowledge to establish grafted nursery-based enterprises for higher profitability. He emphasised the importance of vegetable seed production, low-cost grafted seedling preparation, and wider dissemination of this technique among farmers. Parmender Singh, Deputy Director General, stressed the need to promote entrepreneurship among farmers by adopting advanced technologies in vegetable production to support the "Viksit Krishi-2047".
