Latham suffered the injury while fielding during a T20 match for Birmingham in the Vitality Blast earlier this month and has not recovered sufficiently to be included in the playing 11, the NZC said. Latham will stay in Zimbabwe with New Zealand hoping he will be fit for the second test starting on Aug. 7. "It's hugely disappointing for Tom to be missing the first test, as captain but also as an integral part of the team," head coach Rob Walter said. "It's never great when you lose your captain, who's a world-class opening batter and a great team man, but that said we're going to work really hard to have him available for the second test. "We'll continue to assess and see whether a replacement player is necessary, but at this stage we are hopeful that he'll recover in time." White-ball captain Santner oversaw New Zealand's T20 tri-series victory in Harare where they remained undefeated throughout the five-match series. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. "He was excellent from a strategy point of view and he has a strong understanding of the game. "Whilst the format is different, he certainly has the respect of the players and will be supported by some highly experienced test cricketers, so I trust that he's going to do a great job." REUTERS

Cricket-Henry guides New Zealand to T20 Tri-Series win over S Africa

Cricket - ICC Men's Champions Trophy - Group A - India v New Zealand - Dubai International Stadium, Dubai, United Arab Emirates - March 2, 2025 New Zealand's Matt Henry celebrates with teammates after taking the wicket of India's Virat Kohli, caught out by Glenn Phillips REUTERS/Satish Kumar/File Photo (Reuters) -New Zealand seamer Matt Henry restricted South Africa to three runs from the last over to seal a three-run victory in the Twenty20 International Tri-Series final at the Harare Sports Club in Zimbabwe on Saturday. Chasing 181 for victory, South Africa needed eight off the last eight balls with six wickets in hand, and seven from the final over, but brilliant catches in the outfield by Michael Bracewell and Daryl Mitchell helped restrict them to 177 for six. Dewald Brevis looked as though he had won the game with 31 from 16 deliveries and was an inch or two from completing the job as he launched Henry towards the square-leg boundary, only for Bracewell to juggle the ball as he stepped over the rope back into play to complete the catch. Mitchell took a superb diving effort at long off to dismiss George Linde, who looked as though he would win the game for the South Africans with a big hit down the ground. Senuran Muthusamy could not get bat to ball on the final delivery of the game from Henry, who finished with figures of 2-19 from three overs. "As a group we have been playing some really good cricket and to get over the line in a really tight game, I am proud of the guys," Henry said. "It is credit to the attitude of our team, making sure we stay in the fight and knowing that wickets can change things." New Zealand were sent into bat and amassed 180 for five. Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra both scored 47. Teenager Lhuan-dre Pretorius scored 51 from 35 balls in South Africa's reply and they looked to be coasting home before Brevis' dismissal and the excellent final over from Henry. "We played a pretty good game, it was a match of millimetres," South Africa captain Rassie van der Dussen said. "We have had guys making debuts and experimented a bit (in the series), so for the young guys to come in and get so close, we will learn a lot from this." Zimbabwe were the third team involved in the Tri-Series, but lost all four group games. (Reporting by Nick Said, editing by Ed Osmond)

Cricket-NZ all-rounder Phillips out of Zimbabwe tour with injury

Cricket - ICC Men's Champions Trophy - Semi Final - South Africa v New Zealand - Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore, Pakistan - March 5, 2025 New Zealand's Glenn Phillips in action fielding REUTERS/Akhtar Soomro/ File Photo (Reuters) -New Zealand all-rounder Glenn Phillips has been withdrawn from the team's tour of Zimbabwe because of a groin injury, the country's cricket board said on Friday. Phillips, who suffered the injury during the Major League Cricket final in Dallas, would require "a number of weeks" to recover, New Zealand Cricket said in a statement. The 28-year-old will miss the tri-series, also involving South Africa, and the subsequent two-test series against hosts Zimbabwe. New Zealand are already without batter Finn Allen, who was ruled out of the tri-series with a foot injury suffered in the MLC. "It's obviously disappointing to lose someone of Glenn's calibre," head coach Rob Walter said. "Much like Finn, we really feel for Glenn and that he misses out on this series. "We know he was eager to get out on the field for the Blackcaps and unfortunately, he won't be able to do that for this series. "We know he'll work hard to get himself back onto the park, and I look forward to when that happens." Phillips' replacement in the test squad will be named later, the NZC added. Cricket-Conway replaces injured Allen in NZ squad for T20 tri-series

Cricket - ICC Men's Champions Trophy - Group A - New Zealand v Bangladesh - Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, Rawalpindi, Pakistan - February 24, 2025 New Zealand's Devon Conway in action REUTERS/Akhtar Soomro/File Photo (Reuters) -Wicketkeeper-batter Devon Conway will replace the injured Finn Allen in the New Zealand squad for the 20-overs tri-series in Zimbabwe, New Zealand Cricket said on Sunday. Allen has been ruled out of the tournament after suffering a foot injury while representing the San Francisco Unicorns in the Major League Cricket in the United States. "We're really gutted for Finn," New Zealand head coach Rob Walter said in a statement issued by the New Zealand association. "I was looking forward to working with him and to see him continue his form from the MLC but unfortunately injuries happen. "We're lucky to be able to call on someone of Devon's quality to replace Finn." Mitch Hay, Jimmy Neesham and Tim Robinson will also join the squad as cover for Michael Bracewell, Mark Chapman, Glenn Phillips and Rachin Ravindra, who are involved in the MLC final on Monday. "We knew there'd be a possibility that a handful of players could be involved in the MLC final on Monday, so we're bringing in Mitch, Jimmy and Tim as possible replacements," Walter said. Hosts Zimbabwe face South Africa in the tournament opener on Sunday. New Zealand begin their campaign against South Africa on Wednesday.
