Redesign of Gainsborough Road could see bike lane relocated

The location of a new bike lane in northwest London might be shifted from the road to the adjacent boulevard. On Monday, the Infrastructure and Corporate Services Committee (ICSC) was told by Councillor Corrine Rahman that the rehabilitation of Gainsborough Road near Hyde Park Road must consider all users in the fast-growing part of the city. 'We've got to balance the parking needs, the need for the road to be rehabilitated, and the need for it to be accessible to all users,' Rahman told the committee. Currently, the busy stretch of road would be reconstructed to include a single eastbound lane, a dedicated left turn lane at Hyde Park Road and new bike lanes on both sides of the road. Rahman pressed for public consultation about the final design. She suggested that consideration be given to shifting at least one of the bike lanes onto the boulevard— thereby separating riders from drivers and reducing the capacity constraints for vehicles on the roadway. 'My preference would be boulevard bike lanes,' Rahman told CTV News after the meeting. 'The reason for that is it's a safer option for folks that are looking to ride in this area.' City staff confirmed that bike lanes along that stretch of road were recently approved in the Mobility Master Plan. Relocating the bike lane onto the shoulder might have impacts on the project's budget and timeline. 'I do understand that it's not typically what we would do in a (road) rehabilitation like this because we'd need to move hydro poles and things like that,' Rahman said. 052625 - Render of Gainsborough An artist rendering of Gainsborough at Hyde Park Road. (Source: City of London) Members of ICSC supported Rahman's motion to consult with the public and prepare drawings of an alternative design. 'I do think that it's really important that when we're doing a redevelopment in an area that's growing as much as the northwest part of the city, we have to look at getting this right,' Rahman said. Council makes a final decision about Rahman's motion on June 3.

LAPD launches hate crime investigation after vandal spray paints Mosque

The Los Angeles Police Department has launched a hate crime investigation after a Mosque was vandalized over the weekend. The Mosque, the Islamic Center of Southern California, was vandalized with graffiti on the exterior and on nearby trees, according to a statement. A suspect described by a man in his early 20s was spotted committing the crimes on surveillance video on Saturday night. The ICSC, located on 434 S. Vermont Ave., said the act 'reflects a broader climate of hostility affecting houses of worship across the nation.' Police said the man spray painted various symbols, including the Star of David. In a statement, CAIR Los Angeles Executive Director Hussam Ayloush thanked LAPD for their efforts in the investigation. 'ICSC is a beacon of faith and service in our community, and this hateful act of vandalism is not just an attack on a house of faith, it is an assault on the values of diversity and tolerance. Amidst rising anti-Muslim rhetoric across the country, this disturbing attempt to intimidate and marginalize our community is deeply concerning,' Ayloush said. 'Hate and bigotry, against any group regardless of faith or background, cannot go unchecked. We welcome the LAPD's prompt response in investigating this incident as a hate crime.' LAPD says the investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information regarding a suspect is encouraged to contact the department. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. LAPD launches hate crime investigation into graffiti at Islamic Center of Southern California

The Los Angeles Police Department launched a hate crime investigation after vandals tagged the Islamic Center of Southern California. "As a house of worship, the Islamic Center of Southern California has always strived to be a space of refuge, dignity, and community for all Angelenos. We are deeply saddened by this act, but not deterred," the house of worship stated. The vandalism, mainly graffiti, defaced the Islamic Center of Southern California's exterior wall and nearby trees. The center said LAPD identified the symbols as "potentially hate-motivated." "To our daily congregants, families, students, and visitors — your safety and peace of mind are paramount," ICSC said in a statement. "We understand that incidents like this may cause concern, fear, or even strong emotions such as anger or grief, especially for those who come to ICSC for prayer, learning, or a sense of belonging. These are all valid and deeply human reactions." The center said it will be holding a press conference on Friday, May 16 with the LAPD and other leaders to provide more information about the graffiti. "While this act reflects a broader climate of hostility affecting houses of worship across the nation, our resolve remains firm," ICSC said in a statement. "We continue to be anchored in our mission to foster mercy, justice, and unity — values that will never be erased by acts of hate."
