Over 9,000 Displaced in Yemen Since January, IOM Reports Marib as Epicenter

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has reported that more than 9,000 people have been displaced across Yemen since the beginning of the year, with Marib governorate accounting for the highest number of displacement cases. The surge in displacement is attributed to renewed hostilities, deteriorating economic conditions, and limited access to basic services. According to IOM's Displacement Tracking Matrix, the majority of newly displaced families have fled to Marib city and surrounding districts, seeking shelter in overcrowded camps and informal settlements. Many have been displaced multiple times, compounding their vulnerability and straining local resources. IOM officials warned that the situation in Marib is becoming increasingly unsustainable, with over 1 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) already residing in the governorate. The organization highlighted urgent needs for shelter, food, water, and healthcare, and called for greater humanitarian support to prevent further deterioration. 'The humanitarian situation in Marib is reaching a critical point,' said Olivia Headon, IOM spokesperson. 'We are seeing families forced to flee again and again, often with nothing but the clothes on their backs. The international community must act swiftly to scale up assistance.' IOM also expressed concern over the lack of access to several displacement sites due to insecurity and logistical challenges, warning that hundreds of thousands more could be at risk if frontlines shift further.

Ministry of Social Affairs reviews displaced persons grant system

Minister of Social Affairs and head of the Higher Committee for Displaced Persons, Wafa Al-Kilani, held a meeting at the ministry's headquarters on Saturday to review the disbursement of financial grants to internally displaced persons (IDPs) and assess the mechanisms used to allocate the funds. The meeting, attended by directors of relevant departments, focused on ensuring transparency and fairness in the distribution process and making sure the support reaches those most in need. Al-Kilani stressed the importance of updating IDP databases and improving payment and documentation systems to enhance service efficiency and equity across all regions. She also called for resolving any obstacles affecting the regularity of grant payments. The minister reviewed administrative and logistical operations within the ministry, urging improved interdepartmental coordination, simplified procedures, and better quality of services provided to citizens. Al-Kilani reaffirmed the ministry's commitment to implementing national social protection policies, with a focus on supporting vulnerable and crisis-affected groups, as part of a broader vision to build a sustainable and effective social welfare system. Forces stop 100 IDPs in Manipur from returning home over security

Imphal: Security forces on Wednesday stopped nearly 100 internally displaced people (IDP) in Manipur from returning to their villages in Dolaithabi in Imphal East district as a precautionary measure to prevent any untoward incident, police said. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now According to police, the IDPs, who were staying in a relief camp near Sajiwa in Imphal East district, moved towards Doilaithabi to return to their native villages on Wednesday. "Since Dolaithabi lies in a sensitive fringe zone and had witnessed several attacks from neighbouring hill areas of Kangpokpi district when ethnic violence broke out in May 2023, the IDPs were stopped near Pukhao Tezpur, around 2.5 km from Dolaithabi, to prevent any untoward incident," a senior police officer said. As per sources, adequate security measures have been put in place, and one company of women CRPF personnel has also been deployed. The overall law and order situation is being closely monitored by senior officers to ensure continued stability, he said. The district administration and senior police officers talked with local leaders on the issue. (With inputs from PTI)

U.S. to Maintain Aid to Ethiopia Under New State Department-Led Structure

The United States has confirmed it will continue providing key humanitarian and development assistance to Ethiopia, but under a newly restructured framework that places USAID operations under the direct oversight of the U.S. State Department. In a statement released by the U.S. Embassy in Addis Ababa, officials said the transition—effective July 1, 2025—was initiated as part of a broader foreign aid overhaul mandated by President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The shift aims to 'reduce duplication, strengthen accountability, and align foreign assistance with national security and foreign policy objectives,' according to the embassy. While the operational structure is changing, the U.S. reaffirmed its commitment to ongoing programs in humanitarian relief, food security, and global health, which will now fall under corresponding State Department bureaus. The embassy emphasized that regionally responsive delivery will remain a priority. Earlier in June, U.S. Ambassador to Ethiopia Ervin Massinga had addressed concerns over previous aid suspensions, noting that '89% of the previously programmed humanitarian aid will continue,' while 77% of overall U.S. assistance remains active. He highlighted the resumption of support for healthcare, agriculture, and internally displaced persons (IDPs) as part of ongoing U.S. efforts in the country. Ambassador Massinga also outlined a strategic pivot toward private sector engagement. 'We're moving from assistance to private sector engagement,' he said, citing growing partnerships with Ethiopian Airlines and Boeing, as well as U.S. support for infrastructure developments like the planned Bishoftu International Airport. The announcement offers a degree of reassurance amid widespread concerns over aid cuts and shifting U.S. priorities in the Horn of Africa. Despite the structural changes, the embassy stressed that U.S. support for Ethiopia's development and humanitarian needs remains robust and long-term.

Manipur: Displaced people returning to their villages stopped; police calls it 'precautionary measure'

Manipur Police (File photo/PTI) NEW DELHI: Security forces on Wednesday stopped nearly 100 internally displaced people (IDP) in Manipur from returning to their villages, police said. "The IDPs were staying in a relief camp near Sajiwa in Imphal East district. They moved towards Doilaithabi in the same district, to return to their native villages," a senior officer told news agency PTI. "This was done as a precautionary measure to prevent any untoward incident," the officer added, without providing further details. Thousands of people have been displaced in Manipur due to the ethnic conflict between the majority Meitei and tribal Kuki communities, since May 2023. Earlier, in a major crackdown on Tuesday, security forces recovered 86 weapons and 974 rounds of ammunition in the five valley districts of the Northeastern state. Among the weapons recovered were five AK rifles, three INSAS rifles, 16 SLRs, five .303 rifles, 19 pistols, two carbines, nine other types of rifles, and 16 single-barrel guns. The coordinated operations were conducted by joint teams, comprising the Manipur Police, CAPFs, Army and Assam Rifles.
