My hair was falling out in clumps and my face broke out — this trendy supplement made my skin glow like I was pregnant again
New York Post may receive revenue from affiliate and advertising partnerships for sharing this content and/or when you make a purchase. Around six months postpartum, I lost my glow. Completely. My hair has started falling out in clumps, my skin broke out like I was sixteen again and my nails were so thin and brittle, I gave up on manicures for nearly a year. After I began venting to everyone I knew about missing that early pregnancy glow, one health-conscious friend asked if I'd ever tried colostrum. Colostrum? I knew the word well, just not in that context. Mothers release this golden-colored milk before giving birth, packed with nutrients and vitamins that help strengthen their baby's immune system. I write about a myriad of wellness trends for a living, but at this point, colostrum supplements were still relatively new to the space. Advertisement Then, suddenly, colostrum was taking over my social media feeds. TikTokers were calling it liquid gold, Sofia Grainge was blending it into her Erewhon smoothie, and influencers everywhere were raving about its benefits — better gut health, a stronger immune system, healthier hair, brighter skin and longer nails. It sounded like a free ticket back to that desirable pregnancy glow, minus the actual pregnancy. Brands quickly jumped on the trend, rolling out their versions of bovine colostrum, sourced from cows, and Bloom quickly rose to the top of my 'must-try' list, at least according to social media and some rave reviewers who insisted the strawberries and cream flavor tasted just like a milkshake. I'm not one to say no, so when the chance came to try it for myself, I figured, why not? Just two weeks after starting my twice-a-day scoop, there were a few noticeable differences. My skin started glowing, my hair was growing and even my nail tech commented that my nails are finally out of recovery. Advertisement Maybe this still sounds too good to be true, but Bloom's 3-in-1 formula offers much more than colostrum, and I'm pretty sure that's part of the reason I saw real results. What is Colostrum? Colostrum is the thick, nutrient-rich milk produced by mammals in the first few days after giving birth. Packed with antibodies, white blood cells, growth factors and antioxidants, the golden liquid plays a crucial role in supporting a newborn's developing immune system and strengthening their gut barrier. As a supplement, colostrum is typically sourced from cows. Bloom sources its colostrum from family-owned dairy farms in the US — and no, they're not taking it away from newborn calves. The excess colostrum is collected only after the calves get what they need. No cows are harmed in the process. Does Colostrum actually work? Despite the fact that colostrum has been consumed for centuries, scientific data outlining its benefits is still somewhat limited. Most research has focused on how colostrum affects athletes by boosting IGF1, a growth factor your body produces after workouts or during puberty. Advertisement The first study investigated the role of bovine colostrum in exercise performance and showed marked improvements in explosive muscle power. Athletes engaged in regular training who took bovine colostrum have also reported fewer symptoms of upper respiratory tract infections, demonstrating the supplement's potential to support the immune system during intense training. Further research has delved deeper into the immune effects of colostrum. In infants, enhanced regulatory T cells have been related to the administration of colostrum. Beneficial immune effects have also been demonstrated in animals like pigs, but studies on human subjects are still lacking. What makes Bloom different? Miska Slemann The market is already flooded with colostrum products, and the claims vary widely — from boosting immunity to enhancing athletic performance. I've heard many variations. Over the past two months, I've researched and tested several expert-approved colostrum supplements, including popular brands like ARMRA, PureGold, Cowboy and Bloom. Advertisement Bloom's 3-in-1 formula is the top colostrum supplement in the U.S, according to SPINS data through January 2025. The quality speaks for itself. Third-party testing and sustainable sourcing are distinguishing features, but what truly sets this formula apart is what's inside. Bloom has incorporated collagen peptides and probiotics into its colostrum powder, aiming to amplify the potential benefits. According to the brand, these ingredients are designed to work synergistically. Colostrum contains growth factors that support tissue repair and may stimulate collagen production. When paired with added collagen peptides and probiotics, the combination may help improve gut health and immune function — while also delivering visible benefits like stronger hair, healthier skin and tougher nails. Bloom Pros: Features 1 gram of bioactive colostrum, processed to preserve beneficial components Made with grass-fed collagen peptides and premium probiotics, added for additional health benefits Three flavor options (Unflavored, Strawberries & Cream and Orange Cream) Third-party tested for quality and purity Available in a jar and stick packs to take on the go Cons: Lower serving of collagen (2.5-3.7 grams) than some other collagen products Colostrum and collagen contain dairy, so it's not recommended for those with lactose intolerance or dairy allergies Colostrum is a newer product in the wellness category, but Bloom's Colostrum & Collagen 3-in-1 formula has quickly emerged as one of the most recognizable (and trusted) formulas in the space. The blend features bioactive colostrum, grass-fed collagen peptides and premium probiotics to promote skin, hair, and nail health, balance the gut microbiome and support immunity. Reviewers appreciate the tasty flavor variety, love how easily it blends into drinks and some have reported positive results in the first few days of use. Collagen: 2.5-3.7g | Colostrum: 1g | Probiotics: 6.7mg (2 bllion CFU) | Sugar: <1g | Protein: 3g Bloom Colostrum & Collagen Peptides review Curious about the rage around colostrum, I tested Bloom Colostrum & Collagen Peptides over a two-week period, paying close attention to how it made me feel, as well as any observable physical changes and internal benefits. Here's everything I discovered during my trial. Miska Salemann For a supplement, Bloom's colostrum is almost too easy to take. I hate swallowing pills and can't stand drinks that taste like stevia-sweetened green juice, so Bloom's powder and flavor variety was a pleasant surprise. The fact that it comes with a serving scoop and is available in a jar as well as pre-portioned packets for people who don't have time to sit and sip? Even better. The powder dissolves well with just a bit of stirring (or in seconds, with a handheld whisk). The label advises mixing with cold or room-temperature water to preserve the bioactive factors and such. Despite liking my morning coffee piping hot, I actually preferred the Bloom powder mixed with cold water and some crushed ice. I started with the Orange Cream and Strawberries and Cream flavor — they sounded decadent, and I can affirm, they're refreshingly light and just fruity enough to satisfy a sweet tooth. It's almost hard to believe there's less than a gram of sugar in each serving. I also mixed the unflavored option into a couple of smoothies and an iced coffee, and could barely detect it. If anything, it adds a slightly creamier texture. Advertisement Initially, I was very surprised when I read reviews suggesting that the effects come fast. Within the first week, or even the first few days, customers were claiming their eyelashes were the 'longest they've ever been,' many said their skin was looking very glowy, others mentioned their hair felt softer and some simply suggested that Bloom gave them an 'extra spark.' Yes, it all seems like wellness fluff until you try it yourself. After starting Bloom, I realized the visible benefits are pretty astounding. Within the first week, I noticed my skin looking a little brighter, the dark circles under my eyes were significantly reduced and I was losing much less hair while brushing. Disclaimer to temper expectations: I wouldn't go as far as to say that my skin had completely cleared up, but there were fewer breakouts. By around day 10, even my nail technician commented on how strong and healthy my nails looked. 'Wow, they're really growing again,' she exclaimed, after taking off my polish. Maybe it sounds a little vain, but when people start to notice that you're looking healthier, you really start to feel better too — and that was the case with Bloom. I may have needed some more time to notice the real internal benefits. My digestion remained regular during the testing period, and I didn't notice any dramatic changes to my gut health (although some reviewers mention it's helped with weight loss and bloating). If anything, I used my Bloom drink to replace other sugary snacks I shouldn't be getting into in the first place, so I'll consider that a small win. Advertisement As for immunity, I do live in New York City with a toddler, and take the subway daily, so if there's anyone who could use an extra immune boost, it's probably me. However, it's hard to say for sure that this supplement is the reason I remained generally energetic and cold-free for the two-week testing period. At the end of the day, Bloom's colostrum provides that kind of everyday wellness (feeling good, looking good and enjoying the process) that I think most people would desire from a $30 scoop-a-day supplement. The final verdict Bloom didn't give me an unrecognizable glow-up, but I may have gotten a bit of my first-trimester glow back. My skin, hair and nails were thriving, and I wasn't the only one who noticed a difference. It might not be a miracle cure for gut health or a magic bullet for immunity, but for me, it was very easy to incorporate into my routine and effective enough that I can confidently recommend it to my friends and family who are looking to get back that 'spark.' How we tested Over the course of three months, I tested four different brands of colostrum for roughly two weeks each. While testing Bloom's Colostrum & Collagen Peptides supplement, I took one scoop of colostrum in a glass of water twice a day on an empty stomach. In addition to consulting experts on ingredients and dosage, I considered a number of factors for this review — the flavor, tolerability, quality, as well as external and internal benefits I experienced over the two-week period. Advertisement Miska Salemann Flavor and texture: A powderized supplement should easily dissolve in liquid and taste good enough to drink. Bloom's supplement didn't require an electric whisk, but it dissolved much better when using one. I tried all three flavors — Strawberries and Cream, Orange Cream and the unflavored variation to find that they were smooth and balanced. The sweeter flavors are fruit-forward, but not overpowering, so they mix well into different juices or smoothies. AGEBOX Launches iKids-Growth - A Hormone-Free Breakthrough for Children Falling Behind in Height
RICHMOND, VA / ACCESS Newswire / August 6, 2025 / AGEBOX, a U.S.-based biotech company focused on children's health, has introduced iKids-Growth, the first supplement that helps children reach their height potential by supporting the body's natural production and use of IGF-1 - a key growth factor. In today's healthcare systems, hormone-based treatments such as growth hormone (GH) injections are reserved only for children whose height falls below the 3rd percentile. But many others, often between the 10th and 25th percentiles, may still experience slower growth than their peers, with limited options for support. By combining advanced biomedical research with real family needs, AGEBOX is addressing a long-overlooked gap in pediatric wellness: helping children who may not have a medical condition but still need help growing at a steady pace. Instead of introducing external hormones, iKids-Growth works by gently activating the body's natural growth system, with a day-and-night formula designed to align with the body's own rhythm. IGF-1: The Natural Key to Height Growth Growth is powered by a core biological system known as the GH-IGF-1 axis. In this process, the brain sends signals that trigger the release of growth hormone (GH), which in turn prompts the liver to produce IGF-1 (Insulin-like Growth Factor 1), a natural hormone that directly supports bone growth and skeletal development. When this system functions properly, it lays the foundation for steady and healthy height progression throughout childhood and adolescence. Put simply, GH gives the signal, but IGF-1 makes growth happen. When IGF-1 levels are too low, or when the body doesn't respond well to it, growth can stall, even if GH is normal. This is where iKids-Growth steps in: instead of adding external hormones, it helps the body make more IGF-1 naturally, and use it more effectively - supporting the body's ability to maintain healthy growth patterns. 24-Hour Support Aligned with Natural Rhythms The body's growth system doesn't work the same way all day. Growth hormone (GH) is primarily released at night, while the body responds to IGF-1 signals throughout the day. iKids-Growth is designed around this natural rhythm, with a Day & Night formula that supports height development around the clock. At night, when GH levels peak during deep sleep, the Night formula helps the liver respond to GH and boosts IGF-1 production. During the day, the Day formula supports how bones and muscles respond to IGF-1, promoting steady physical development. This dual-action approach works with the body's natural timing, enhancing growth potential without disrupting biological balance. Both formulas are powered by curated natural ingredients - including astragalus root, blue-green algae, and oyster extract - each selected for its targeted activity within IGF-1-related pathways. To ensure effectiveness, these compounds are screened and refined using Acesvia™, AGEBOX's proprietary research platform that combines human primary cell screening and function-guided extraction. Human primary cell testing is the gold standard for evaluating biological activity outside the body. It allows researchers to precisely observe how each compound engages with growth-related pathways at the cellular level. This level of cellular insight is what sets iKids-Growth apart from conventional supplements. Backed by Clinical Research and Real-World Data While iKids-Growth is not a medical treatment, its development and evaluation embrace the highest scientific standards typically reserved for pharmaceuticals. This means starting with precise cellular studies, progressing through carefully designed clinical trials, and confirming findings with data from everyday use. In evidence-based medicine, different types of studies offer varying levels of confidence. At the top of this hierarchy are randomized controlled trials (RCTs), widely regarded as the reliable way to evaluate how well an intervention may support its intended health outcomes. iKids-Growth is currently involved in over 20 clinical studies, including multiple RCTs that rigorously test its safety and ability to support healthy growth. These trials include children with diverse growth challenges, such as those with lower-than-average IGF-1 levels and rare growth diseases. Beyond clinical research, real-world experience adds another layer of assurance. More than 50,000 families have chosen iKids-Growth, with detailed outcomes tracked for over 3,000 children, reinforcing its safety and potential to support healthy development in everyday settings. A Bigger Vision in Pediatric Health AGEBOX was founded in 2009 with a clear goal: to refine children's health solutions through safe, natural, and scientifically supported approaches. Over the years, the team developed the Acesvia Platform, and mapped the molecular pathways most relevant to children's growth and development. These scientific foundations led to the creation of iKids-Growth in 2021: a supplement that reflects both clinical insight and real family needs. And this is just the beginning. AGEBOX continues to expand its pipeline, with more products in development to support children across a wider range of health challenges. Behind every formula is a simple principle: every child deserves one more chance to thrive. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. About AGEBOX AGEBOX Inc. is a U.S.-based biotechnology company that develops evidence-based dietary supplements to support children's growth, cognition, and metabolic health. The company's proprietary Acesvia™ Platform uses human cell models to identify and refine GRAS-listed materials with measurable biological effects. Too Much Protein Could Actually Shorten Your Lifespan, According to Longevity Experts
Overconsumption of animal-based protein raises IGF-1 levels—a growth hormone linked to increased risk of chronic disease, accelerated aging, and reduced cellular repair. While IGF-1 is essential in youth and for muscle repair, chronically elevated levels in adulthood can disrupt longevity by promoting cell growth over cellular cleanup (autophagy). Experts recommend a Mediterranean or flexitarian approach—favoring plant- and fish-based proteins over heavy meat consumption—to reduce IGF-1 and support long-term is an essential nutrient for optimal health. And between the variety of meats, eggs, beans, nuts, and so much more to choose from, there are a lot of options when it comes to sourcing protein. Unfortunately, though, an overconsumption of protein can actually sabotage your longevity efforts, says healthy aging expert Dr. Joseph Antoun. 'Consuming excessive protein, particularly from animal sources, raises IGF-1 levels,' he says. 'IGF-1, Insulin-like Growth Factor 1, is a hormone that plays a crucial role in growth and cell proliferation.' But what's the science behind the negative effects of eating too much protein? How is IGF-1 affected? We asked our longevity experts all the questions—including the best approach to eating the right amount of protein. 'Excessive IGF-1 is harmful to healthy longevity, as it promotes cellular growth over repair (increasing the risk of mutations), decreases autophagy (the cellular cleanup process key to healthy aging), and increases risk of chronic diseases,' Dr. Antoun says. Foods that are high in animal protein—such as meat, eggs, and even milk—stimulate and increase our IGF-1 levels, meaning the more you eat, the more you're at risk of increased IGF-1 levels. 'While it's essential in childhood and for muscle repair, chronically elevated IGF-1 in adults has been linked to accelerated biological aging, and therefore, an increased risk of age-related conditions,' Dr. Antoun says. 'I call this condition the 'Diabetes of Protein,' whereby high IGF is excessively aging the body way beyond what the muscles require.' You might notice these lasting impacts on excessively muscular figures, such as body builders, who look great during their peak but tend to age poorly in their 50s and 60s. Much like when you're a kid, eating animal-based protein in your 20s can feel and seem healthy, Dr. Antoun notes. Around the mid-life period, however, disease formation begins and can slow down the natural processes of our body. You might be wondering what exactly you can eat to get your recommended daily intake of protein. Don't worry—we've got you covered. 'A well-balanced, plant-forward approach, such as a longevity-based diet (rich in complex carbs, plant-based/fish-based proteins, and healthy fats from nuts and seeds) offers a far more evidence-based path to metabolic health, disease prevention, and healthspan,' Dr. Antoun says. 'When we study centenarians, we notice that most of them follow a plant-based Mediterranean, pescatarian, or flexitarian [semi-vegetarian] diet.' Rather than quitting cold turkey, it's best to slowly replace animal protein with plant-based protein without completely giving up meat or eggs. For example, you might turn your weekly grilled chicken rotation into a salad, where you're getting more diverse nutrients than just animal protein. If you tend to eat a specific meat the most, consider replacing it with a plant-based protein like tofu, so you're still getting the same textural experience while managing your IGF-1 levels. 'A pure vegan diet is also correlated with longevity, but it needs to be supplemented with protein—especially at early and late stages of life,' Dr. Antoun adds. Like most things, consumption of animal protein in moderation can be a small change that makes a big difference. Read the original article on Real Simple
