J&K: Sufficient security in place for Kheer Bhawani festival

Srinagar: Adequate security arrangements have been put in place for the upcoming Mela Kheer Bhawani in J&K's Ganderbal district, an official said on Saturday. The annual Mela of Mata Kheer Bhawani, being celebrated on June 3, is the holiest local festival for the Kashmir Pandit community. The spring shrine in Tullamulla town of Ganderbal district, 25 km from Srinagar city, is dedicated to the deity Ragnya Devi, the reincarnation of goddess Durga. Local Kashmiri Pandits believe that the colour of the water at the goddess's spring in Tullamulla foretells the coming events in J&K and the rest of the country. The pink or milky colour of the spring water is believed to be suspicious, while the dark black colour spells bad days ahead. Elders in Tullamulla town say that in 1947, when the tribals invaded Kashmir, the water at the deity's spring had turned black. V.K. Birdi, IGP (Kashmir), visited the temple shrine on Saturday to take stock of the security arrangements for hundreds of Kashmiri Pandit devotees who come to the shrine from different parts of the country. The IGP told reporters at the shrine that comprehensive preparations have been made to ensure a safe and smooth event for devotees. He said that a large number of pilgrims are expected to attend the festival. 'Extensive arrangements have been made to ensure that the devotees do not face any inconvenience and their security remains a top priority. Robust deployment and logistical support are in place to manage the crowd efficiently,' he said. In response to concerns arising from the recent Pahalgam attack, the IGP emphasised that the security setup for such events is always meticulously reviewed and reinforced. He reassured that measures adopted during last year's mela, which saw an incident-free gathering, would be mirrored and further strengthened this year. He further added that similar vigilance is being implemented for the upcoming Amarnath Yatra, with routine threat assessments and area sanitisation underway. 'We remain committed to the safety of every pilgrim', the IGP added.

Exit Srinagar, enter Pahalgam: To build confidence, Omar, his cabinet to meet at terror-hit tourist spot

To instil confidence in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack and encourage tourists to return to Kashmir, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and his cabinet will move out of the capital, Srinagar, to tourist resorts of Pahalgam and Gulmarg for two days. On Tuesday, the J&K cabinet and top civil and police officers will meet not in Srinagar's civil secretariat, but at a resort in Pahalgam. This comes a little over a month after 25 tourists and a local were killed in a terror strike in the meadows of Pahalgam. 'Obviously, if we don't go to these places, who will?' CM's advisor Nasir Aslam Wani told The Indian Express. 'There are two objectives of this meeting – first, that we go to these far-off places and get first-hand information from the ground, and second, it becomes more important in the current situation that we go there (to instil confidence).' Abdullah will personally chair the meeting, which Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo will also attend. The CM and his cabinet are also likely to meet stakeholders from the tourism sector in Pahalgam. A similar meeting is scheduled at a tourist resort in Gulmarg in north Kashmir on Wednesday. Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kashmir, V K Birdi is expected to be in attendance. The meetings come at a time when tourism in the Valley has taken a serious hit, with stakeholders in the sector saying 90 per cent of bookings have been cancelled. 'There is a hope that these (meetings) will infuse confidence among tourism players as well as tourists that it's safe to return to the Valley,' said an official. In fact, during the NITI Aayog meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi on Saturday, Abdullah suggested that meetings of the parliamentary consultative committee, the parliamentary standing committee, and public sector undertakings be held in J&K to allay security fears. This is not the first time Omar and his cabinet have moved out of the state capital. In his first stint as chief minister, he held a cabinet meeting on the Line of Control in Tangdhar in May 2012 to 'bring governance to the doorsteps (of people)'. Rauf Tramboo, president of the Travel Agents Association of Kashmir, said that the meetings are a welcome decision, but 'to build confidence, we need to do some tangible things.' 'The first thing for the government to do to build confidence among tourists is to open destinations that have been kept out of bounds. And the second thing is to open trekking trails, especially safe ones like the Great Lakes trek or the Tarsar Marsar,' Tramboo said.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) extends its appreciation to all media practitioners for their continued cooperation in delivering accurate and reliable information to the public, thereby contributing to the nation's security and harmony. Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said the mass media is an important entity that plays a vital role in conveying the force's efforts to uphold the supremacy of the Constitution and enforce the law fairly across all levels of society. 'The strong cooperation between PDRM and the media is built on a shared responsibility to disseminate accurate and transparent information in the interest of justice, regardless of the situation. 'The media has a 'unique power' that can influence the minds and win the hearts of the public, making them strategic partners in efforts to strengthen security and curb negative influences,' he said at the IGP's Appreciation Ceremony with the Media in Bukit Aman today. He added that PDRM continuously recognises the media not only as providers of information and the voice of the people, but also as 'observers' who can offer constructive feedback and suggestions to improve PDRM's service delivery system. 'The responsibilities of police officers and media practitioners are centred on safeguarding national security, fostering racial harmony, and promoting inclusive national unity. 'Therefore, the distribution of information must be in line with the needs, fundamental rights and interests of the community so that we continue to be trusted and relevant,' he said.
