IIT Madras honours school teachers who inspired students to excel in JEE last year

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras has organised a two-day demo day on June 9 and 10, where candidates who have qualified in the Joint Engineering Examinations (JEE) will interact with students, alumni, and teachers and visit the facilities on the campus. Candidates unable to travel may participate in the online event to be held on June 3. Offline events are being held at six cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Jaipur, Vijayawada, Hyderabad, and Chennai. In Chennai, around 300 students and their parents will participate in the event. The students will also have an opportunity to attend classes that will be conducted by professors. They will visit laboratories and the Centre for Innovation. The aim of the effort is to help students decide their course of study. Institute director V. Kamakoti said the top 100 ranked students invariably choose computer science and engineering over core engineering subjects. 'We conduct several efforts like Shaastra, Saarang, Open House, and CFI Day. We want students to opt for core engineering over CSE,' he said. The institute has introduced awards to honour pre-undergraduate teachers whose efforts were instrumental in their students making it to the institute in 2024-25. The 'First Principles' Teachers' award (FPTA) recognises the teachers who helped the students understand concepts in physics, chemistry, and mathematics within the IIT-JEE syllabus. Institute director V. Kamakoti said students had two methods of learning; one is rote and arriving at the right answer by elimination in JEE. The other is understanding the concept and applying them to arrive at solutions. 'This is the ideal way of learning. This is how school education should be. We wanted to recognise such teachers,' he said. 'We asked the students who was their inspiration and we asked the first year students to nominate their teachers. The second group of students consistently come up with unexpected solutions. This was the reason we decided to honour them,' he said. Sabitha G.J., mathematics teacher from Ida Scudder ICSE School in Vellore, has a personalised way of teaching. Her student Adhil Ahmed, a student of the Department of Artificial Intelligence and Data Science said his teacher had motivated and inspired him. 'He would sit alone and solve mathematic problems in the afternoon. I sat with him and encouraged him,' she said. She sometimes uses dance movements and rhymes to teach concepts. Chemistry teacher Anurooop Naik of Bengaluru was nominated by his student Arun Radhakrishnan, a student of Department of Computer Science and Engineering. Mr. Naik said he would use daily incidents to explain concepts. He had a nickname for his students using chemical compounds that helped students remember the concepts. Mr. Naik is an alumnus of Banaras Hindu University and taught class 11 and 12 students in Srinagar for three years. He says they were the most enjoyable years so far. He plans to set up his own institute when he finds motivated physics and mathematics teachers. Prathap Haridoss, Dean, academic courses, and Amrutash Misra of AskIITM Initiative, and alumnus also spoke.

Hold NEET-PG exam in one sitting; two papers can vary in difficulty: Supreme Court

Representative image NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday directed the National Board of Examinations (NBE) to conduct the NEET-PG exam in one sitting for all 2.4 lakh candidates instead of the scheduled test in two shifts in 900 centres across India on June 15. A bench of Justices Vikram Nath, Sanjay Kumar and N V Anjaria said it was not ready to accept that the body conducting the examination could not find enough centres to accommodate all candidates in one shift. "Holding the examination in two shifts is arbitrary and does not allow candidates to have the same question paper. Any two different question papers will vary in their difficulty levels," the bench said. When counsel for NBE said the norm in IIT-JEE was to have multiple sets of question papers and then apply normalisation of marks according to difficulty levels of questions, SC said normalisation of marks could be adopted only in exceptional circumstances and not routinely year after year. It directed NBE to set up an adequate number of additional examination centres to conduct NEET-PG in one sitting. When the counsel said the process for identifying additional secure examination centres could result in postponing the June 15 exam date, the bench said if the authorities require postponement of the test for finding more centres, it would have to seek permission from the court.

Another NEET aspirant dies by suicide in Kota despite Supreme Court's warnings to Rajasthan govt

In yet another tragic incident, a NEET aspirant from Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) died by suicide in Kota, Rajasthan highlighting the ongoing mental health crisis among students preparing for competitive exams in India. The student, identified as Zeeshan, had arrived in Kota just a week ago to prepare for the NEET UG medical entrance exam. The incident occurred in Mahavir Nagar, a locality known for housing students attending coaching institutes. According to police reports, Zeeshan took her life by hanging herself in her room late on Sunday evening. Shockingly, she was reportedly on a phone call with a friend from J&K at the time of the incident. When the hostel staff and neighbours were alerted, they tried to access her room but they found the door locked from inside. With help from a nearby carpenter, authorities had to cut through the door to enter the girl's room. Zeeshan was found hanging and was immediately rushed to the hospital, where she was declared brought dead. Police have confirmed that no suicide note was recovered from the scene. The body has been placed in the mortuary, and the post-mortem will be conducted after the arrival of her family, who have been informed of the tragedy. Zeeshan had reportedly pursued online coaching last year and had shifted to Kota for in-person preparation just seven days ago, taking residence in a hostel in Mahavir Nagar Third. This incident comes just days after the Supreme Court strongly criticised the Rajasthan state government over the alarming number of student suicides in Kota this year. The Supreme Court questioned what concrete steps have been taken in response to 14 student suicides reported in 2025 alone. The Apex Court remarked that the issue must be taken "seriously and not lightly," urging immediate intervention. In a symbolic reprimand, the Supreme Court also withheld the salary of the Kota Superintendent of Police (SP) as of July 14, emphasising administrative accountability. Kota, often referred to as India's coaching capital, has been under the spotlight due to a disturbing pattern of suicides among students, especially those preparing for NEET and IIT-JEE exams. Academic pressure, isolation, and lack of emotional support continue to pose grave challenges.

All about Vishal Mega Mart security guard job drive; here's how it started the biggest meme fest

Job trends at Vishal Mega Mart: What started as a routine recruitment drive by Vishal Mega Mart has unexpectedly turned into a nationwide online sensation. The retail chain, known for its over 700 stores across India, recently announced a massive hiring push for thousands of security guards. While the goal was to boost their workforce, the Internet had other plans. Social media users quickly latched onto the announcement, turning the security guard role into a cultural moment packed with satire, memes, and humorous commentary on India's employment scene. Phrases like 'Ek hi sapna – Vishal Mega Mart security guard' and 'Vishal Mega Mart chowkidar first attempt fail' started popping up online, mimicking the language used by aspirants of India's most competitive exams like UPSC, NEET, and IIT-JEE. What was once just a retail job suddenly became the centre of memes, jokes, and viral reels. The spark was Vishal Mega Mart's large-scale call for applications — an open invitation for thousands of security guard positions across India. The recruitment details, once circulated on WhatsApp groups and social platforms, caught fire. What intrigued people even more was the structured selection process: a written exam covering current affairs, English, and local languages, followed by physical training, medical checks, and preference for candidates with experience, martial arts skills, or shooting training. Vishal mega Mart security guard job context !🫠 — Arpit (@arpitsrivastvv) May 17, 2025 With the country already burdened by job shortages, the idea that even a guard's post required such competitive filtering hit home, albeit with a heavy dose of satire. The seriousness of the process, all very real, became the perfect material for meme creators. As the trend picked up steam, memers unleashed their creativity. Fake coaching centres offering 'Vishal Mega Mart Security Guard Prep Classes' started appearing in parody posts. AI-generated memes flooded Instagram and X, including one where Virat Kohli and Cristiano Ronaldo were spotted wearing security guard uniforms outside a Vishal Mega Mart – a perfect blend of absurdity and brilliance. Reels began showcasing mock training montages and exaggerated selection drills, and some creators even spoofed classic 'first attempt fail' motivational videos.
