HC directs Tangedco to pay relief for electrocution deaths of man, son
Madurai: Madras high court has directed Tangedco authorities to pay a compensation of Rs10 lakh to a woman whose husband and son died after coming into contact with a live electric wire during Cyclone Gaja in Kodaikanal, Dindigul district. The court was hearing the petition filed by Subulakshmi, a resident of Pethuparai village in Kodaikanal. The petitioner stated that her husband, Ravi, and her son, Raja Pandi, were agricultural labourers. On Dec 2, 2018, in the morning, when Pandi was drying his wet cloth on a clothesline in front of the house, a live electric wire came in contact with the clothesline. Pandi was electrocuted. When Ravi went to save Pandi, he also suffered electrocution and died. The petitioner stated that due to Cyclone Gaja, there was no electricity supply for over 10 days. Without checking whether the lines were safe and proper, Tangedco authorities restored the connection, which resulted in the death of her husband and son. Earlier, she filed a petition in 2019 seeking compensation. The state govt released an ex gratia of Rs2 lakh in 2021. Recording the same, the court closed the case. Stating that the incident happened due to the negligence of Tangedco, the petitioner filed the present petition in 2022. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like IITD Online Programme in AI IITD TAILP Apply Now Undo Justice V Lakshminarayanan observed that Tangedco has evolved a scheme for payment of compensation to the survivors of electrocution victims. ‘Great Khali' undergoes rare brain surgery at PGI
1 2 Chandigarh: In a medical triumph that defies conventional limits, doctors at the PGI successfully performed complex brain surgery on a towering 35-year-old man measuring 7 feet 7 inches. The patient, Sunil Kumar, popularly known as 'The Great Khali of Jammu', is the tallest patient operated on at the PGI with an excessive growth hormone condition — gigantism. This is a rare disease affecting about 7 to 8 people per million population globally and numbering only in hundreds. This makes Sunil's case exceptionally rare and presented the medical team with unprecedented challenges. He is posted as a head constable with the Jammu and Kashmir police and suffers from a rare condition called gigantism. It is a condition characterised by excessive growth due to an overproduction of growth hormone in childhood. Sunil, who even ventured into acting with roles in movies like 'Stree 2' and as Amitabh Bachchan's body double in 'Kalki', pushed the boundaries of standard surgical procedures. The most significant hurdle arose from his immense stature: he was a full 14 inches taller than the standard operating table, a critical issue that would have left his limbs dangerously unsupported during the delicate procedure, compromising both his safety and the surgeons' ability to work effectively. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like IITD Tech Leadership Program IITD TAILP Apply Now Undo Displaying remarkable quick-thinking, the medical team devised a simple yet brilliant solution. They secured a standard stainless-steel nursing trolley to the end of the operating table, effectively extending its length to 8 feet 5 inches. This improvisation provided ample space for Sunil's entire body, ensuring optimal positioning and a safe surgical environment. Due to Sunil's medical condition, the doctors had to drill through bones that were significantly thicker than normal, even breaking a finer instrument despite using larger tools. "Working in an institute like PGI is a different experience every day because of the diverse variety of cases we come across," said Dr Rajeev Chauhan, additional professor of anaesthesia. "This patient was challenging in terms of his height and weight as well as other airway concerns. We did a rehearsal one day prior to surgery to make internal arrangements to adjust for the OT table." The neuro-anaesthesia team, led by Dr Chauhan, managed Sunil's anaesthesia, especially considering that his gigantism can lead to an enlarged tongue and thickened throat tissues, making airway management difficult. Advanced video technology was used to safely guide the breathing tube into place. The neurosurgery team, led by Prof Rajesh Chhabra and Dr Apinderpreet Singh, successfully removed the large tumour from Sunil's pituitary gland. Post-surgery, the team is closely monitoring Sunil for any potential complications. "I have done over 100 acromegaly cases — where there is an excessive growth hormone which is mainly due to the tumour in the pituitary gland in an adult. It does not result in an increase in height, but causes larger hands, feet, ears, lips, and nose and a more prominent jaw and forehead. But gigantism is rare," said Prof Chhabra. Despite the limitations his height sometimes presents, such as difficulty finding clothes and travel, Sunil embraces his unique stature. "I have always been healthy and suffered from no illness. I was investigated here and was successfully operated upon," he said.

Major cybercrime network busted near Visakhapatnam; over 100 detained in Atchutapuram raid
In a major breakthrough, police on May 22 busted an international-style cybercrime operation allegedly run from half a dozen buildings near the Atchutapuram SEZ and industrial area in Andhra Pradesh's Anakapalli district. The racket had reportedly been active for the past two years. During a midnight raid, over 100 individuals, including women, were detained and taken to an undisclosed location for questioning. The accused are suspected of targeting victims in countries such as the US, UK, and Australia. Police said the suspects operated out of what appeared to be call centres, using their English-speaking skills — particularly distinct regional accents — to deceive foreign nationals, TOI reported. 'A number of the youths were specifically recruited for their English accents to make the scam appear legitimate to foreign victims,' a police officer said. The detainees were questioned about their recruitment process, daily routines, and operational methods. The operation followed four months of surveillance and is being described as the first of its kind in the region. During the raid, several individuals managed to flee, taking advantage of the darkness and what police described as limited personnel during the operation. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like IITD Online Programme in AI IITD TAILP Apply Now Undo The alleged cybercrime centres were located across multiple buildings without signboards, making them less conspicuous. Most of those detained were not locals but hailed from northeastern states, according to officials. Some of the detainees claimed they were unaware of the fraudulent activities and had joined the setup just a week earlier, insisting they were still undergoing an "employee induction" phase. Located around 80 km from Visakhapatnam , Atchutapuram has rapidly developed into an industrial hub, with growing residential infrastructure. Police believe this made it easier for the fraudsters to operate discreetly. 'We thought it was a call centre. Most of them were always on their phones, and many of the flats had computers,' a local resident said. The initial probe revealed that recruits were promised monthly salaries ranging from Rs 20,000 to Rs 30,000. Investigators have identified three primary roles among the accused: some acted as bankers handling deposits, others managed financial transactions, and a third group directly interacted with foreign victims to execute the fraud. Social Security rules around new retirement age announced as fresh rules begin in May
As of May 2025, the Social Security Administration 's gradual adjustment of the Full Retirement Age (FRA) continues to shape the retirement decisions of millions of Americans. This phased change, originally established by the 1983 amendments to the Social Security Act, is designed to reflect increased life expectancy and ensure the long-term sustainability of the Social Security program. #Operation Sindoor India responds to Pak's ceasefire violation; All that happened India-Pakistan ceasefire reactions: Who said what Punjab's hopes for normalcy dimmed by fresh violations In 2025, individuals born in 1959 are reaching a key milestone. Their Full Retirement Age is now set at 66 years and 10 months, meaning depending on their birth month, they will reach FRA between March 2025 and January 2026. This adjustment is part of a broader schedule that incrementally raises the FRA for each birth year cohort. For example, those born in 1955 have an FRA of 66 years and 2 months, while individuals born in 1956 must wait until 66 years and 4 months. The FRA increases by two months each subsequent year: 66 years and 6 months for 1957 births, 66 years and 8 months for 1958, and 66 years and 10 months for those born in 1959. For anyone born in 1960 or later, the Full Retirement Age is set at 67. For someone whose FRA is 66 years and 10 months, starting benefits at age 62 would lead to a permanent reduction of approximately 29.17%. On the other hand, delaying retirement beyond the FRA can boost benefits considerably. Live Events For each year retirement is postponed (up to age 70), monthly benefits increase by about 8%. As a result, retirees today must carefully weigh when to claim their benefits, balancing immediate needs against long-term financial security.
