Amputee Everest Climber Arunima Sinha to Speak at ILA Lecture

The oldest expat women's organization in the GCC, The Indian Ladies Association (ILA) Bahrain, has announced that sports legend and celebrated Motivational Speaker, Dr. Arunima Sinha will deliver this year's Leela Jashanmal Lecture, a prestigious annual event dedicated to empowerment, inclusivity, and dialogue. She shall be joined by Bahraini para-triathlete Shaikha Al Shaiba and together, they will speak to an invitation-only audience about their journey to success despite physical challenges and how to turn adversity into advantage. Padma Shri Mrs. Arunima Sinha, the world's first female amputee to summit Mount Everest and only the second globally to achieve this feat. A national volleyball champion, Arunima's life took a dramatic turn when she was thrown from a moving train during a robbery in 2011, resulting in the loss of her leg. Undeterred, she reinvented herself as a mountaineer, scaling six additional major peaks beyond Everest—a testament to her unshakable resilience, courage, and ambition. Joining her is Shaikha Al Shaiba, Bahrain's renowned Para-athlete and motivational speaker, whose journey exemplifies strength, determination, and joyful achievement. In collaboration with the Bahrain Disabled Sports Federation, ILA will also honor Bahraini para-athletes who have represented the Kingdom at sporting events globally, reinforcing Bahrain's commitment to empowering individuals across diverse abilities. The event, to be held on May 31st at at the BIBF Auditorium, is open to all by invitation only. Stories of grit, survival, and leadership will take centre stage on May 31st as the Indian Ladies Association (ILA) Bahrain hosts its flagship annual event, the Leela Jashanmal Lecture 2025, at the BIBF Auditorium. This year's event will feature India's celebrated mountaineer Arunima Sinha and Bahrain's own para-athlete and motivational speaker Shaikha Al Shaiba, highlighting narratives of overcoming physical challenges and societal barriers. Honouring resilience Arunima, a former national volleyball player, made global headlines as the first female amputee to scale Mount Everest after losing her leg in a train attack in 2011. She went on to conquer six other major peaks, becoming a symbol of courage and willpower. Joining her on stage will be Shaikha Al Shaiba, who has represented Bahrain internationally and is known for her passionate advocacy of para-sports and inclusion. ILA, which was established in 1956 and is Bahrain's oldest expatriate women's charity, will also recognise the achievements of Bahraini para-athletes at the event in collaboration with the Bahrain Disabled Sports Federation. Legacy of dialogue Named after ILA's founder, the Leela Jashanmal Lecture honours women who break barriers. Past speakers have included India's leading reformers and changemakers such as Dr Kiran Bedi, Prof Shanta Sinha, and Dr Vandana Shiva. Through this platform, ILA continues to encourage dialogue around empowerment, diversity, and leadership. Now in its 69th year, ILA says the event celebrates 'the enduring power of compassion, companionship, and cultural exchange' between Indian women and their Bahraini peers. The organisers also encourage media to engage in preevent interviews and postevent coverage to expand the reach of the inspirational messages shared. The event will be held from 5 PM to 7 PM and is open to the public.

More than 1,000 Starbucks baristas from 75 locations in the U.S. have initiated a strike on Sunday in response to a new dress code implemented by the company, a union representing the coffee giant's employees reported on Wednesday. As of Monday, the company has simplified its dress code to highlight its signature green apron. According to the coffee chain's updated policy, baristas can wear any black shirt, whether short- or long-sleeved, collared or button-up, paired with khaki, black or blue denim pants. Starbucks previously said it would provide two branded T-shirts for staff members at no cost. In April, Starbucks Workers United sent a letter to the Seattle-based coffee maker as 'a formal request that no change to the current dress code be implemented at Union-represented stores until the parties conclude bargaining.' On Wednesday, Starbucks said that the strike was affecting its 10,000 company-operated stores in the U.S. to a limited extent. Phil Gee, a Starbucks spokesperson said, 'Thousands of Starbucks partners (employees) came to work today ready to serve their customers and communities. The biggest update to our dress code is simple: wear a black shirt — either your own or one we provide. Workers United represents less than 5 percent of our workforce [– 570 of 10,000-plus stores.]' The spokesperson said, 'While the union is focused on a simplified dress code, we're focused on providing the best job in retail with a wage and benefits package that averages more than $30 per hour for hourly partners. It would be more productive if the union would put the same effort into coming back to the table to finalize a reasonable contract.' Less than 1 percent of Starbucks stores have experienced any disruption over the last 4 days cumulatively, according to the company. Starbucks and Workers United are said to have held more than nine bargaining sessions over 20 days and three mediation sessions over five days with a federal mediator since last April. Starbucks has reached 30-plus 'meaningful agreements about hundreds of topics' that Workers United delegates told the company were important to them, according to the spokesman. According to AP, Starbucks Workers United said it filed a complaint with the National Labor Relations Board. Council votes to replace Snoqualmie police with King County Sheriff's services in North Bend

The North Bend City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to begin negotiating a new interlocal agreement (ILA) with the King County Sheriff's Office for police services, the City of North Bend announced. The decision came after months of review and public input regarding the city's current law enforcement arrangement with the Snoqualmie Police Department. The transition would mark the end of a 14-year policing partnership with Snoqualmie. Councilmembers at the May 6 meeting emphasized that the decision was not made lightly and was the result of a thorough, data-driven evaluation. 'The Snoqualmie Police Department has served us well and kept us safe,' said Councilmember Heather Koellen. 'The same will be true for the Sheriff's Department. They will protect us and keep us safe.' Under the current agreement, North Bend contracts with the City of Snoqualmie for police services. But officials say that arrangement restricts North Bend's input on key financial decisions such as officer salaries, facility upgrades, and training costs. Councilmember Chris Rustik, who chairs the city's Public Health and Safety Committee, said the new agreement with King County is expected to offer more flexibility and oversight. 'While this contract is for police services, the contract itself is with the City of Snoqualmie and limits our direct involvement,' Rustik said. 'Although opinions may vary on the best approach, it is very clear that the safety of our community is a top priority for us all.' Community feedback played a major role in the decision-making process. During public comment, local residents, business owners, nonprofit leaders, and Snoqualmie officials—including Mayor Katherine Ross—shared their experiences with current policing services. Mayor Pro Tem Mark Joselyn emphasized that the decision was based on safety and governance, not dissatisfaction. 'If I believed for a minute that becoming a contract city with the King County Sheriff's Office would make our community less safe, I would not support it,' he said. He also pointed to positive reports from other cities that contract with the Sheriff's Office, including Woodinville and Sammamish. In a prior April 8 workstudy session, the King County Sheriff's Office presented a detailed proposal and participated in an extensive Q&A with councilmembers. The city cited responsive communication and data sharing as strengths during the evaluation process. Mayor Mary Miller said the city is committed to ensuring a smooth transition, emphasizing continued transparency and community engagement. 'We will have the transition process be as smooth as possible,' she said. 'Thank you to the community for coming up and talking to us, saying exactly how you feel… Don't ever stop.' The Snoqualmie Police Department will continue to serve North Bend during the negotiation period and for up to 18 months following any official termination notice from the city, as required by the current contract.
