Starbucks Workers Go on Strike to Protest New Dress Code

Yahoo15-05-2025

More than 1,000 Starbucks baristas from 75 locations in the U.S. have initiated a strike on Sunday in response to a new dress code implemented by the company, a union representing the coffee giant's employees reported on Wednesday.
As of Monday, the company has simplified its dress code to highlight its signature green apron. According to the coffee chain's updated policy, baristas can wear any black shirt, whether short- or long-sleeved, collared or button-up, paired with khaki, black or blue denim pants. Starbucks previously said it would provide two branded T-shirts for staff members at no cost.

The new dress code affects employees at company-operated and licensed stores in the U.S. and Canada. In April, Starbucks Workers United sent a letter to the Seattle-based coffee maker as 'a formal request that no change to the current dress code be implemented at Union-represented stores until the parties conclude bargaining.'
On Wednesday, Starbucks said that the strike was affecting its 10,000 company-operated stores in the U.S. to a limited extent.
Phil Gee, a Starbucks spokesperson said, 'Thousands of Starbucks partners (employees) came to work today ready to serve their customers and communities. The biggest update to our dress code is simple: wear a black shirt — either your own or one we provide. Workers United represents less than 5 percent of our workforce [– 570 of 10,000-plus stores.]'
The spokesperson said, 'While the union is focused on a simplified dress code, we're focused on providing the best job in retail with a wage and benefits package that averages more than $30 per hour for hourly partners. It would be more productive if the union would put the same effort into coming back to the table to finalize a reasonable contract.'
Less than 1 percent of Starbucks stores have experienced any disruption over the last 4 days cumulatively, according to the company. Starbucks and Workers United are said to have held more than nine bargaining sessions over 20 days and three mediation sessions over five days with a federal mediator since last April. Starbucks has reached 30-plus 'meaningful agreements about hundreds of topics' that Workers United delegates told the company were important to them, according to the spokesman.
According to AP, Starbucks Workers United said it filed a complaint with the National Labor Relations Board.

Cigna, Allegheny Health Network contract dispute threatens in-network access for thousands

Thousands of Cigna commercially insured people in the Pittsburgh region could lose in-network access to Allegheny Health Network by the end of June in a dispute over a new contract. AHN patients who use Cigna were notified this week of the impasse in negotiations on a new contract, meaning most care would be out of network if there isn't a new contract in place by June 30, according to a copy of a letter obtained by the Pittsburgh Business Times. About 20,000 Cigna members have used an AHN provider within the past year. It's the second such dispute in the past two years. The contract that runs out is for commercially insured members and not for Medicare or Medicare Advantage members. Cigna in March 2025 sold the Medicare-related business to Health Care Service Corp., a Chicago-based insurer. HCSC's coverage of Medicare and Medicare Advantage patients isn't impacted by this dispute and those patients will continue to have in-network access to AHN no matter what happens to the commercial insurance agreement. United Flight Attendants to Receive More Pay, Benefits After Heated Contract Talks

The tentative agreement ends years of heated talks between flight attendants and United management. Just last year, flight attendants voted overwhelmingly to authorize a strike. United Airlines flight attendants are set to receive payscale raises that average about 27%, according to a tentative agreement posted Tuesday by the flight attendants' union. For example, a first-year flight attendant at United will be paid $36.92 per hour, a 27.8% increase from the $28.88 hourly wage. A flight attendant who has worked at least 13 years with the airline will now receive $84.78 an hour, up from $67.11. Voting for the new contract is set to start July 7 and will end July 29. If the contract is approved, then it will go into effect on July 30. Along with raises, flight attendants will also receive boarding pay. One of the issues among flight attendants across the airline industry was a lack of boarding pay. Flight attendants have typically only been compensated for their work inside the plane. The contract also includes provisions for healthcare and an increase in 401(k) matching. Flight attendants will also receive 10 weeks of paid maternity leave, along with two weeks for paid parental and adoption leave. The agreement gives the union more say over hotel selection and the ability for flight attendants to select their own crew meals. Those meals will be of the same quality as those served to passengers in business class cabins. Airlines Reach Agreements With Flight Attendants United was one of the last U.S. airlines to be in contract negotiations with flight attendants. American Airlines, Southwest Airlines, and Alaska Airlines recently reached agreements with their respective flight attendant unions. At times, negotiations became heated. Last August, United flight attendants voted overwhelmingly to authorize a strike. However, United flight attendants couldn't immediately strike. The Railway Labor Act has a 30-day 'cooling off' period before any strikes can occur. The National Mediation Board also has to release flight attendants from negotiations. United flight attendants also held multiple rallies at the carrier's hubs to advocate for more benefits. What am I looking at? The performance of airline sector stocks within the ST200. Dave's Hot Chicken acquired by private equity firm that owns Subway Just eight years after starting in a Los Angeles parking lot, Dave's Hot Chicken has been acquired by private equity firm Roark Capital in a deal worth approximately $1 billion to enter its "next phase of growth and innovation." A spokesperson for Dave's Hot Chicken confirmed the acquisition to USA TODAY via email on Wednesday, June 4. Started by three childhood friends in a parking lot in Los Angeles in 2017, the chain primarily offers chicken tenders and chicken sandwiches and expects to end the year with over 400 locations worldwide. According to the company, it has sold the rights to more than 1,000 franchise locations in the U.S., Middle East and Canada and will open 155-plus locations this year. 'This is one of the great entrepreneurial journeys of our time, and now we begin the next chapter in the story,' said Bill Phelps, Dave's Hot Chicken's CEO, in a news release. 'Our entire organization is excited about the fit between Dave's Hot Chicken and Roark, and we're looking forward to continuing to blow our guests' minds and unlocking growth and value for our franchise partners.' According to reporting from CNBC, Phelps, who previously led Wetzel's Pretzels for 25 years, joined Dave's in 2019, less than two years after its founding. Phelps told the business news outlet Dave's could reach up to 4,000 locations worldwide over the next 10 years. Dave's leadership team will remain in their roles, according to the news release, continuing to drive the company's "menu innovation, food quality, in-store experience, operations, marketing, branding, digital and more."
