A 57-year-old Chinese fugitive was arrested in Sandton after applying for a US visa, following a global Red Notice issued by INTERPOL.
A 57-year-old Chinese national wanted in connection with a fraud case in China has been arrested in Sandton after his fugitive status was flagged during a visa application at the US embassy.
The arrest was carried out on Tuesday, July 22, by the INTERPOL National Central Bureau (NCB) in Pretoria, a specialised unit within the South African Police Service (SAPS) that has been instrumental in tracking down transnational criminals.
According to a preliminary report, INTERPOL had issued a Red Notice – an international alert to locate and provisionally detain a suspect – to all member countries. The suspect's location was traced when he attempted to apply for a visa at the embassy.
He appeared in the Randburg Magistrate's Court on Wednesday, 23 July. Further extradition proceedings are expected to follow.
The Pretoria NCB has recorded a number of recent successes in apprehending international fugitives and disrupting global crime networks operating within South Africa.)
