KUCHING (Aug 13): A total of 78 illegal immigrants, including four children, and one local man were detained during an integrated Op Sekat operation against illegal immigrants conducted by Kuching District Police Headquarters (IPD Kuching) on Aug 12. The eight-hour operation, which ran from 10pm to 6am, involved 215 personnel, comprising 30 officers and 185 members from IPD Kuching, the 11th Battalion of the General Operations Force (PGA) Batu Kawa, the Immigration Department, and the National Registration Department. Kuching district police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said those detained ranged in age from nine months to 56 years. 'In this operation, a total of 78 illegal immigrants and one local man were detained. Their ages ranged from nine months to 56 years. The gender breakdown is 59 adult men, 15 adult women, one boy, and three girls. In terms of nationality, 62 were Indonesians and 16 were Bangladeshis. 'In this operation, 67 illegal immigrants were found to have committed offences under Section 6(1)(c) and Section 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63. 'The local man tested positive for drugs under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952,' he said in a statement today. The operation targeted areas identified as hotspots for illegal immigrants, including industrial zones, construction sites, and squatter settlements. Alexson said the coordinated effort aimed to detect, detain, and take legal action against illegal immigrants, as well as to strengthen security and ensure socio-economic sustainability for Malaysians. 'This integrated operation was conducted following several cases of house break-ins and robberies in areas surrounding illegal immigrant settlements, where they were suspected of being involved in these incidents,' he added. KUCHING (July 3): A 24-year-old local man was arrested early this morning for suspected drug trafficking during a raid at a commercial centre at Jalan Green here. Kuching district police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said the operation was carried out by a team from the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division of the Kuching District Police Headquarters (IPD Kuching) at around 1.10am. He added that the raid led to the seizure of 7,450g suspected to be cannabis, estimated to be worth RM23,095 on the market. 'The suspect has no prior criminal record, and an initial urine test returned negative for drug use,' he said. Alexson said the suspect has been remanded for five days until July 7, to facilitate investigation under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act (DDA) 1952, which provides for a death sentence or life imprisonment and not less than 12 strokes of whipping if not sentenced to death. He also called on the public to continue sharing information on drug trafficking and abuse in their communities to facilitate prompt enforcement action. According to a statement posted by the Kuching District Police Headquarters (IPD Kuching) on Facebook, the incident occurred around 11pm on Thursday (May 29) during a meet-up arranged for a mobile phone sale involving a Huawei Nova 5T. It was reported that the suspect had pretended to agree to the purchase and invited the student to accompany him to his house under the pretext of collecting money to complete the transaction. 'The suspect, who was riding a motorcycle with the complainant, later dismounted and threatened the victim from behind with a sharp object, demanding that he hand over two mobile phones,' the post stated. The suspect, a local man, was subsequently apprehended by police the following day (May 30). 'The suspect has several prior criminal records. Police also seized one of the victim's mobile phones and a dark blue jacket believed to have been used during the incident,' the post added. Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect admitted to his involvement in the robbery. The case is being investigated under Section 392 of the Penal Code for robbery without the use of firearms. The suspect has been remanded by the Kuching Magistrate's Court.
