Wasim Akram's Life-Size Statue In Pakistan's Hyderabad Triggers Memes, Jokes On Social Media
The state of Pakistan cricket is in a complete mess as their team filed to live up to the expectations. From the league stage elimination in the ODI World Cup 2023 to the group stage exit in the T20 World Cup in 2024, Pakistan men's cricket team hit new lows in every tournament. Apart from the failure of the players, another aspect which marred the Pakistan cricket are the constant changes in their board. As a result of this downfall, cricket fans around the world are slowly forgetting the contributions made by the greats like Shoaib Akhtar, Wasim Akram, Imran Khan and others. Recently, former Pakistan skipper Wasim Akram was honoured with a life-size statue at Niaz Stadium in Hyderabad, Pakistan. However, this honour turned out to be a laughing stock for the viewers due to its bizarre appearance. The statute showed Akram doing his legendary bowling action and sported Pakistan's 1992 World Cup jersey. However, the face of the statue had some resemblance with famous Hollywood actor Sylvester Stallone and the fans showed no mercy. In Tests, he took a whopping total of 414 wickets while in ODIs, he took 502 wickets. He announced his retirement from international cricket after Pakistan's elimination from the 2003 World Cup. After calling time on his playing career, Akram took up coaching jobs and even coached the IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders between 2010 to 2016. Earlier, during an interaction with VU Sports, Akram narrated an incident from IPL 2012, when SRK arranged a Boeing for the entire team, in order to give the players some rest before the knockout match. "I think this happened during the 2012 IPL season. Our knockout match was in Kolkata, and I remember we were going to arrive via, via some place. Shah Rukh Khan was there, so I asked him, 'Khan saab, ek request hai (Mr Khan, I have a request)'. I said, 'Ladke bade thak jayenge, hum kal pahunchenge, parso match hai. Toh agar ek private plane (The team will get extremely tired. We'll reach tomorrow, and the match is the day after. If a private plane could be arranged)...'" said Akram. "He said, 'Thak jayenge ladke? Koi problem nahi (They'll get tired you say, no problem)'. Within one hour, pura Boeing jahaaz khada tha for the whole team," Akram added.

On This Day In IPL 2012: Warner's Century Powers Delhi Daredevils To Big Win Over Deccan Chargers
Last Updated: On This Day In 2012: Warner was rewarded with the honour for playing a knock that completely stole the show. On This Day In 2012: David Warner maybe best remembered for his magnificent performances and inspiring leadership in Sunrisers Hyderabad colours, but it was his fantastic blitz for the Delhi Capitals in the initial years of the IPL that first made him a household name here. Before he transformed Sunrisers' fortunes, the blistering Australian opener made waves for the then-Delhi Daredevils. And it was on this day, 13 years back, that Warner played perhaps his finest knock for the Delhi franchise during IPL 2012. Warner hammered an unbeaten 109 off just 54 deliveries to help Delhi surpass Deccan Chargers in a league stage encounter played in Hyderabad. The aggressive left-hander took the stings out of the Chargers bowling line-up and produced 10 fours and 7 sixes during his memorable knock. Despite the Capitals chasing an imposing target of 188, Warner's tremendous effort took his team home with nine wickets intact and more than three overs remaining as he completely dominated the opposition. The visitors lost their captain and swashbuckling opener Virender Sehwag early for just 4 runs. But that seemed to put no pressure on Warner, whose innings went at a jaw-dropping strike rate of 201.85. It was an innings for the ages that Chargers' attack simply had no answers to. The left-hander smashed their spinners and pacers to all parts at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, which later became Warner's home with the Sunrisers. Warner was rewarded with the honour for playing a knock that completely stole the show and overshadowed the gutsy efforts of DC's Shikhar Dhawan (84) and Cameron White (65) in the first half. Warner spent another year with the Delhi franchise before joining the Sunrisers with IPL 2014 to kick off a golden run, including their only title win under his captaincy in 2016. Nitish Reddy Cites RCB's Comeback Story From IPL 2024: 'Why Not Us This Year...'
Last Updated: Chasing a paltry 155, Sunrisers Hyderabad reached the target in the penultimate over as Kamindu Mendis and Nitish Reddy set up a match-winning stand. Star India and Sunrisers Hyderabad all-rounder Nitish Reddy has said that with his team's IPL 2025 campaign currently in a do-or-die situation, they would like to take inspiration from the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, who made a starry comeback from the bottom of the points table halfway through IPL 2024 to qualify for the playoffs, finishing fourth. Hyderabad's five-wicket win against the Chennai Super Kings saw them end their two-match losing streak, and the latter fell to their second straight loss. Speaking after the game, India international Nitish revelled in his franchise's win against Chennai and said that they will be hoping to make a late push for the playoffs. 'The thought for the team, and it went pretty well. It is taking it match by match and proud that we won this match and hopefully the coming matches as well. (on his stand with Kamindu) We were talking about playing a normal game and not looking to hit the big shots," Nitish said while speaking to the host broadcasters. 'Last year, the same situation RCB came up and won 7 in a row. Why not us this year? It is putting in 100 per cent, and the rest we will see," Nitish added. Hyderabad are eighth in the IPL 2025 points table with six points in nine games, ahead of bottom-placed Chennai, who have four points from nine fixtures. This was Chennai's fourth successive loss at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. They have matched their IPL 2008 and IPL 2012 seasons for most losses at home in a season. On Friday, Ishan Kishan (44 off 34 balls), after his brain fade against the Mumbai Indians, played a responsible hand at the top before Kamindu Mendis (32 not out off 22 balls) and Nitish (19 not out off 13 balls) got the visitors two points with a 49-run partnership. With six points from nine matches, Hyderabad's play-off qualification hangs by a thread as they need to win all their five games and that too by a fair margin to end on 16 points. SRH play their next game against the Gujarat Titans on May 2 at the latter's home. First Published: April 26, 2025, 08:38 IST
