"Captain's Job Is To...": R Ashwin Schools Rishabh Pant Over Jitesh Sharma-Digvesh Rathi Incident

The Jitesh Sharma -Digvesh Rathi incident during the Royal Challengers Bengaluru vs Lucknow Super Giants game on Tuesday once again gave rise to debates regaring a controversial mode of dismissal in cricket. LSG spinner Digvesh tried to run out RCB's Jitesh at the non-striker's end on the final ball of the 17th over of the innings. While TV umpire concluded it as not out based on the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) laws, the camera showed that LSG captain Rishabh Pant too intervened there and decided to withdraw the appeal. Speaking about the incident, former India all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin has backed the young player. "As an owner of LSG, I will be thinking that I need Jitesh Sharma's wicket. If he has stepped outside the crease, he is out. Now let me dive into the technicality of the incident. Is he justified in being out if he stepped outside the crease before Digvesh Rathi got into the delivery stride? Yes. Would it be bad for RCB? Yes, again, because they would not have liked Rathi or Pant if they did that. Now let's dive into the real-case scenario. When Rathi landed his front foot, Jitesh was inside the crease. So, this was not out. After breaking the stumps, umpire Michael Gough asked him whether he was appealing, and not whether he was sure. He said, 'Yes, I'm appealing.' So the decision went to the third umpire, and the right decision was made," said Ashwin on his YouTube channel ' Ash ki Baat '. Ashwin felt that Pant should not have asked for the withdrawl of the appeal as it was within the rules of cricket. "Until now, everything was right. But after that, commentators started saying that 'Pant has withdrawn the appeal - what an amazing act of sportsmanship.' Grow out of this," he said. "I am a big fan of Pant. I'm clarifying it yet again before being targeted by people. But think, you are the father of Rathi, and his captain, in front of crores of people, criticised him. He actually went over the board because a captain's job is to back a bowler and not make him feel small. "Stop this vilification of the youngster in front of crores of people. Do we do that to anybody else? Why does a bowler have to look small? It's actually a humiliation. And what will happen is that he will never do this again." Notably, Ashwin had himself been a victim of the criticism for effecting such a dismissal back in IPL 2019. Playing for Kings XI Punjab, Ashwin had run out then Rajasthan Royals batter Jos Buttler at the non-striker's end during his bowling. Listen to the latest songs, only on

'Dhoni barged on to the field, Kohli not banned': Virender Sehwag defends 'young player' Digvesh Rathi after suspension

Digvesh Rathi. (Image credit: BCCI/IPL) Former India cricketer Virender Sehwag has criticised the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for showing inconsistency in implementing disc ipl inary actions against players in the Indian Premier League (IPL), specifically highlighting the recent suspension of Lucknow Super Giants' Digvesh Singh Rathi while past incidents involving MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli resulted in lesser penalties. Digvesh Rathi, a leg-spinner for LSG, received a one-match suspension following an on-field altercation with Abhishek Sharma during their match against Sunrisers Hyderabad. The incident marked Rathi's third Code of Conduct breach this IPL season. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! The BCCI clarified that Rathi's suspension was the result of accumulated demerit points from multiple incidents throughout the season, not solely from the confrontation with Sharma. "I thought that the ban was a bit harsh. The boy is playing in his first year in the IPL. MS Dhoni had barged into the ground, he was not banned then. Virat Kohli has spoken to umpires in that tone, who knows how many times, he was also not banned. So, Digvesh Rathi could have been spared, because he is a young player, just coming into the scene, could have let that one go," Sehwag stated while speaking on Cricbuzz. The controversy stems from Rathi's previous infractions, including his trademark "notebook" celebrations after dismissing opposition batters, which contributed to his accumulation of demerit points. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo "This was his third Level 1 offence under Article 2.5 this season and hence, he has accumulated two Demerit Points, in addition to three Demerit Points he had accumulated earlier - One Demerit Point against Punjab Kings on April 01, 2025 and two Demerit Points against Mumbai Indians on April 04, 2025. As he now has Five Demerit Points this season - which result in a one-game suspension - Digvesh will now be suspended for LSG's next game - against Gujarat Titans on May 22, 2025 in Ahmedabad," the BCCI explained in their statement. Dhoni angry moment🔥vs umpire || CSK vs RR || IPL 2019 #msdhoni #cricket #trending #ipl #india #csk The incident has brought attention to previous controversies involving prominent players. In 2019, MS Dhoni entered the field during a match between Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings to dispute a no-ball decision with umpires, resulting only in a 50% match fee fine. Similarly, Kohli, despite being involved in multiple on-field disagreements throughout his 18-year IPL career, has never faced suspension. Virat Kohli vs. Gautam Gambhir full fight video The key difference in these cases lies in the accumulation of demerit points. While Rathi reached the five-point threshold that triggers an automatic suspension, neither Dhoni nor Kohli had accumulated enough points to warrant such action. The suspension meant Rathi missed Lucknow Super Giants' upcoming match against Gujarat Titans, while Abhishek received a fine and demerit points for his role in the altercation. ‘Dhoni barged into the ground but wasn't banned. Kohli argued with umpires many times': Sehwag questions Digvesh's ban

Former India opener Virender Sehwag blamed the BCCI for treating different players differently in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as far as punishments for breach of the Code of Conduct were concerned. Sehwag's observation came after Lucknow Super Giants leg-spinner Digvesh Singh Rathi was suspended for a match for his on-field scuffle with Abhishek Sharma during LSG's match against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Abhishek was slapped with a fine and demerit points Sehwag said Digvesh's ban was harsh, as there have been past instances in the IPL involving big names like MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli, but the BCCI never suspended them. "I thought that the ban was a bit harsh. The boy is playing in his first year in the IPL. MS Dhoni had barged into the ground, he was not banned then. Virat Kohli has spoken to umpires in that tone, who knows how many times, he was also not banned. So, Digvesh Rathi could have been spared, because he is a young player, just coming into the scene, could have let that one go," Sehwag said, speaking on Cricbuzz. In an IPL 2019 match between Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings, MS Dhoni entered the ground during CSK's chase to argue with the on-field umpires over a controversial no-ball call. The CSK captain got away with a fine on 50% fine on his match fees. Kohli, who has been involved in quite a few on-field arguments throughout the 18 years of IPL, was never suspended. Sehwag, however, missed one crucial point. Digvesh Rathi was not suspended because of that one incident with Abhishek Sharma. The LSG leg-spinner had already accumulated three demerit points for earlier Code of Conduct breaches that were deemed as Level 1 offences, mainly due to his over-the-top tick-the-notebook celebrations after dismissing opposition batters. The on-field scuffle with Abhishek Sharma, which was once sparked because of his notebook celebration, was Digvesh's third offence of the season, which took his total demerit points tally this season to five. "This was his third Level 1 offence under Article 2.5 this season and hence, he has accumulated two Demerit Points, in addition to three Demerit Points he had accumulated earlier - One Demerit Point against Punjab Kings on April 01, 2025 and two Demerit Points against Mumbai Indians on April 04, 2025. As he now has Five Demerit Points this season - which result in a one-game suspension - Digvesh will now be suspended for LSG's next game - against Gujarat Titans on May 22, 2025 in Ahmedabad," BCCI said. Whereas in Dhoni and Kohli's case, their demerit points tally never reached five for the BCCI to officially suspend them.

'You made him feel small': R Ashwin hits out at Rishabh Pant for not backing Digvesh Rathi

Image credit: BCCI/IPL NEW DELHI: Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who has been under scrutiny himself since the controversial run-out of Jos Buttler in IPL 2019, stood firmly in support of Lucknow Super Giants bowler Digvesh Rathi on Wednesday. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin dissected the incident involving Rathi's attempt to dismiss Royal Challengers Bengaluru's stand-in captain Jitesh Sharma at the non-striker's end during their IPL 2025 clash in Lucknow. The cameras showed LSG skipper Rishabh Pant withdrawing the appeal and embracing Jitesh, an act the commentators hailed as a great display of sportsmanship. Ashwin strongly disagreed with that narrative. Zaheer Khan: 'Rishabh Pant's calibre and ability never in doubt' "Until now, everything was right. But after that, commentators started saying that Pant has withdrawn the appeal - what an amazing act of sportsmanship. Grow out of this. Pant is a fantastic cricketer. He scored a stunning century, and I know he will go on to do great things in cricket. I am already looking forward to the England series just to see how he will bat and help India win. I am a big fan of Pant. I'm clarifying it yet again before being targeted by people. But think, you are the father of Rathi, and his captain, in front of crores of people, criticised him. He actually went over the board. A captain's job is to back the bowler and not make himself feel small," Ashwin added. WHAT EXACTLY HAPPENED The incident took place in the 17th over of Rathi's spell. With Royal Challengers Bengaluru needing 29 runs off the final 19 balls, Rathi attempted to run Jitesh Sharma out at the non-striker's end. He paused before delivering the ball and removed the bails when he spotted Jitesh stepping out of his crease. IPL 2025: What went wrong for Delhi Capitals? Rathi went on to appeal for the dismissal. However, the third umpire, after reviewing the footage, ruled that the bowler had already completed his delivery stride and crossed the popping crease. The decision of 'not out' was flashed on the big screen. Simultaneously, LSG captain Pant also withdrew the appeal and hugged Jitesh, a moment that was widely praised as an act of sportsmanship. Nonetheless, Pant's gesture had no bearing on the outcome, as the appeal was already invalid under the rules. WHAT THE RULE SAYS According to MCC Law 38.3.1: "At any time from the moment the ball comes into play until the instant when the bowler would normally have been expected to release the ball, the non-striker is liable to be run out..." Further clarity is provided in subsections 38.3.1.1 and 38.3.1.2, which state that the non-striker can be dismissed only until "the moment the bowler's arm reaches the highest point of his/her normal bowling action in the delivery swing." R Ashwin Slams Rishabh Pant For Withdrawing Digvesh Rathi's Mankad Appeal

Curated By : Last Updated: May 28, 2025, 16:43 IST R Ashwin slams Rishabh Pant for withdraw Digvesh Rathi's Mankad appeal. (Picture Credit: Screengrab) Former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin slammed Rishabh Pant for withdrawing Digvesh Rathi's Mankad appeal. The incident took place during the last league match of IPL 2025 played between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Lucknow Super Giants at Ekana Stadium in Lucknow on Tuesday (May 27). On the fifth ball of the 17th over of the run chase, Rathi made an attempt to run out RCB's stand-in captain Jitesh Sharma at the non-striker's end, but LSG skipper Pant withdrew the appeal. Pant's act was labelled as a 'great act of sportsmanship" by commentators during the IPL and fans on social media platforms, but Ashwin, who famously ran out Jos Buttler at the non-striker's end during the IPL 2019 match played between Rajasthan Royals and Punjab Kings, slammed Pant's act. According to the former PBKS captain, by withdrawing the appeal, Pant shattered Digvesh's confidence. 'Captain's job is actually to back a player. A captain's job is not to make a bowler feel small. By making this decision of pulling away an appeal, ye pehle karna chahiye tha (should have discussed earlier)." Ashwin recalled the IPL 2020 incident and said that the year after he famously ran out Buttler at the non-striker's end, he joined Delhi Capitals, and their team's head coach, Ricky Ponting, told him that DC won't run out any player at the non-striker's end, and he also agreed to follow the same. But in the case of Rathi, Pant withdrew the appeal after his teammate tried to run a batter out. According to Ashwin, he is not sure whether this (running out at the non-striker's end) was discussed before. 'We don't know if they discussed, but let's stop this vilification of that youngster in front of crores and crores of people. Do we do that to anybody else? Why does a bowler look small? It is actually a humiliation." 'So what happens is a bowler feels so small that he will never do that again. People will say that he should never do that (run out at the non-striker's end) again. Why should he not do that? It is actually not about the rule. The batsman taking an extra step gives him an opportunity to finish a two." But I am saying ki ek bowler ko itna scar kar doge aap aisa karne mein that it will really affect him. But because nobody really cares about a bowler. So you can insult him by withdrawing his appeal in front of crores of people." News cricket R Ashwin Slams Rishabh Pant For Withdrawing Digvesh Rathi's Mankad Appeal
