'You made him feel small': R Ashwin hits out at Rishabh Pant for not backing Digvesh Rathi

NEW DELHI: Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who has been under scrutiny himself since the controversial run-out of Jos Buttler in IPL 2019, stood firmly in support of Lucknow Super Giants bowler Digvesh Rathi on Wednesday.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin dissected the incident involving Rathi's attempt to dismiss Royal Challengers Bengaluru's stand-in captain Jitesh Sharma at the non-striker's end during their IPL 2025 clash in Lucknow.
"As an owner of LSG, I will be thinking that I need Jitesh Sharma's wicket. If he has stepped outside the crease, he is out. Now let me dive into the technicality of the incident. Is he justified in being out if he stepped outside the crease before Digvesh Rathi got into the delivery stride? Yes.
Would it be bad for RCB? Yes, again, because they would not have liked Rathi or Pant if they did that. Now let's look into the real-case scenario.
When Rathi landed his front foot, Jitesh was inside the crease. So, this was not out. After breaking the stumps, umpire Michael Gough asked him whether he was appealing, and not whether he was sure. He said, 'Yes, I'm appealing.' So the decision went to the third umpire, and the right decision was made," Ashwin explained.

However, what happened after the decision left Ashwin furious. The cameras showed LSG skipper
Rishabh Pant
withdrawing the appeal and embracing Jitesh, an act the commentators hailed as a great display of sportsmanship. Ashwin strongly disagreed with that narrative.
Zaheer Khan: 'Rishabh Pant's calibre and ability never in doubt'
"Until now, everything was right. But after that, commentators started saying that Pant has withdrawn the appeal - what an amazing act of sportsmanship. Grow out of this.
Pant is a fantastic cricketer. He scored a stunning century, and I know he will go on to do great things in cricket. I am already looking forward to the England series just to see how he will bat and help India win. I am a big fan of Pant. I'm clarifying it yet again before being targeted by people.
But think, you are the father of Rathi, and his captain, in front of crores of people, criticised him. He actually went over the board.
A captain's job is to back the bowler and not make himself feel small," Ashwin added.
WHAT EXACTLY HAPPENED
The incident took place in the 17th over of Rathi's spell. With Royal Challengers Bengaluru needing 29 runs off the final 19 balls, Rathi attempted to run Jitesh Sharma out at the non-striker's end.
He paused before delivering the ball and removed the bails when he spotted Jitesh stepping out of his crease.

Rathi went on to appeal for the dismissal.
However, the third umpire, after reviewing the footage, ruled that the bowler had already completed his delivery stride and crossed the popping crease. The decision of 'not out' was flashed on the big screen. Simultaneously, LSG captain Pant also withdrew the appeal and hugged Jitesh, a moment that was widely praised as an act of sportsmanship. Nonetheless, Pant's gesture had no bearing on the outcome, as the appeal was already invalid under the rules.
WHAT THE RULE SAYS
According to MCC Law 38.3.1: "At any time from the moment the ball comes into play until the instant when the bowler would normally have been expected to release the ball, the non-striker is liable to be run out..."
Further clarity is provided in subsections 38.3.1.1 and 38.3.1.2, which state that the non-striker can be dismissed only until "the moment the bowler's arm reaches the highest point of his/her normal bowling action in the delivery swing."

Bengaluru stampede probe: Notices to be issued to RCB, Police Commissioner and KSCA
Bengaluru Urban Deputy Commissioner G Jagadeesha, who is leading the magisterial inquiry into the stampede near M Chinnaswamy Stadium, said on Thursday that notices will be issued to the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) management, the event organisers, and City Police Commissioner B Dayananda, news agency PTI reported. The stampede, which occurred during the RCB victory celebrations on Wednesday, resulted in the deaths of 11 people and left over 50 injured. (Also Read: 'Bengaluru lost its image, BJP playing politics on dead bodies': DK Shivakumar on stampede) "I visited the KSCA stadium today to review the scene. Notices will be sent to key stakeholders to join the inquiry. The investigation will be completed within 15 days," Jagadeesha told reporters. He clarified that the inquiry is just beginning and refrained from making any conclusions about who was responsible. "I am starting the inquiry now. I will not draw conclusions at this stage," he said. When asked whether permission had been granted for the event, the Deputy Commissioner said he was not the competent authority to issue permissions, which fall under the purview of the Police Commissioner. "I have to inquire and submit a report to the government," he added. The state government had earlier announced a magisterial probe into the incident and promised accountability following public outcry and political criticism. In response to the stampede near Bengaluru's M. Chinnaswamy Stadium that claimed 11 lives, the Karnataka government will introduce a new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to regulate large-scale public events, state Home Minister G Parameshwara announced on Thursday. Speaking to reporters, Parameshwara said the proposed SOP will cover mega events, public meetings, and celebrations, with a focus on preventing crowd-related incidents. He added that the government is committed to identifying the lapses that led to Wednesday's tragedy, where thousands had gathered to celebrate Royal Challengers Bengaluru's IPL victory, overwhelming the stadium's capacity. "Strict measures will be taken to address the shortcomings that resulted in this unfortunate incident," he said. ‘My fiancée was inside, unaware of the chaos': X user shares emotional post after RCB stampede that killed 11
Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) sparked wild celebrations across Bengaluru after winning their maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) title in 18 years. The team clinched victory on Tuesday by defeating Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. On Wednesday morning, RCB's management announced plans for a victory parade in the city. This featured an open-top bus procession from Vidhana Soudha to Chinnaswamy Stadium, followed by a celebratory event inside the venue. A limited number of free passes for the event were released online. However, joy turned into tragedy on Wednesday evening when a stampede unfolded outside the stadium, just ahead of RCB's victory parade. According to reports, at least eleven people died and several others were injured in the incident. Among the many emotional reactions shared online, an X user who goes by @MNVGowda revealed that his fiancée had been inside the stadium at the time, completely unaware of the chaos outside. 'My fiancée was inside the stadium when the stampede happened. She said she had no idea what was going on outside and only found out after coming out. I can't imagine how Kohli and the team must have felt upon hearing this heartbreaking news. I'm feeling really low right now,' the post read. They were felicitated at Vidhana Soudha in the presence of Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, before heading to the stadium for the much-anticipated open-top bus parade. Thousands of fans had gathered around both Vidhana Soudha and Chinnaswamy Stadium in anticipation. However, there was confusion around the celebrations near the stadium as the victory parade was only confirmed at the last minute.

AB de Villiers' shock revelation with ‘I was overpaid' remark; new IPL champions RCB justify letting go Venkatesh Iyer
Former South African AB de Villiers felt he was 'overpaid' during his 11-year stay at Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The revelation came after RCB's maiden IPL title on Tuesday, beating Punjab Kings in the final in Ahmedabad with former Indian cricketer Abhinav Mukund spilling the details. Following RCB's win, Mukund revealed a conversation with De Villiers. 'I was sitting next to AB de Villiers and he told me something that I don't think any legend in the IPL has said. But he genuinely meant it, he said it from a place of emotion," Mukund told broadcasters. "He said I was overpaid. I'm overpaid, I thought I was overpaid because I feel like all of the other elements that you're talking about, right? Where you're able to buy so many other superstar players, all those match winners you're talking about. The highest amount of money that they spent on (for IPL 2025) was for someone like a Phil Salt or Josh Hazlewood. They didn't cross 15,' added Mukund. Having started his IPL journey with Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) in 2008, De Villiers shifted base to RCB for ₹ 5 crore and was retained twice in 2014 ( ₹ 9.5 crore) and 2018 ( ₹ 11 crore) seasons. The right-hander played till 2021, all at RCB since 2011. During the IPL 2025 mega auction, Venkatesh Iyer was the last player that RCB failed to rope in despite going all out for the Madhya Pradesh batter. Eventually, the left-hander went to his parent franchise Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for a whopping ₹ 23.75 crore. However, Iyer turned out to be RCB's lucky escape as the newly-crowed IPL champions used that money to buy Josh Hazlewood ( ₹ 12.50 crore) and Phil Salt ( ₹ 11.50 crore). Both Hazlewood and Salt made crucial impacts in ending RCB's 18-year title drought. While ended the season with 403 runs, Hazlewood returned with 22 wickets. In comparison, Iyer contributed with 142 runs in 11 matches. Stay updated on all the action from the IPL 2025.
