LG CNS to build Korea's first overseas AI data center in Jakarta

LG CNS, a Korean information technology solutions provider under LG Group, announced Wednesday it will construct a 100 billion won ($72 million) artificial intelligence data center in Jakarta, Indonesia. This marks the first time a Korean company has established an AI-focused data center overseas. The project will be carried out through a joint venture with Indonesia's third-largest conglomerate, Sinar Mas Group. The joint entity, LG Sinarmas Technology Solutions, secured the deal with local data center developer Kuningan Mas Gemilang. The planned facility will be an 11-story structure with a gross floor area of 46,281 square meters, capable of housing more than 100,000 servers. It is slated for completion by the end of 2026. The project will initially support 30 megawatts of power, with plans to scale up to 220 megawatts — making it the largest AI data center in Indonesia. KMG, a joint venture between Sinar Mas Group and Korea Investment Real Asset Management, has been leading efforts to develop AI data center infrastructure in the region. Recognizing the potential of data centers and cloud services as future growth engines, Sinar Mas selected LG CNS as its strategic partner due to the Korean firm's proven expertise in the sector. Last year, the company delivered consulting and design services for the project, which helped secure its role in the main construction phase. LG CNS plans to implement an integrated "One LG" solution, incorporating technologies from affiliates such as LG Electronics' cooling systems and LG Energy Solution's battery platforms. To address soaring AI computing demand across Indonesia and Southeast Asia, the center will feature specialized infrastructure for graphics processing unit farms. A hybrid cooling system will be deployed to manage heat from high-performance graphics processing units, along with an environmentally friendly heating, ventilation and air conditioning system that automatically controls temperature and humidity. The facility will also support network neutrality, allowing tenants to freely choose telecommunications carriers. Located in Menteng, central Jakarta, the site is expected to offer strategic access to national backbone networks and submarine cable systems, positioning it as a future digital hub. 'Leveraging this project, LG CNS aims to expand our AI data center business across Southeast Asia, including Singapore and Malaysia,' said LG CNS CEO Hyun Shin-kyun. LG CNS brings to the table over three decades of experience in operating and constructing data centers, including nine domestic and overseas facilities. The company also holds top-tier certifications such as the ISO 22301 for business continuity and ISO 50001 for energy management, along with Korea's disaster risk reduction certification.

Working Life: Watching Leonardo DiCaprio's ‘Before the Flood' documentary spurred me to decide to make climate action my life's work

Samuel Awe, HSE Capital & Estates regional sustainability office, HSE Dublin and Midlands 'Science has been my favourite subject since I was a kid. I'd watch Brainiac: Science Abuse and Backyard Science, hoping that I would one day contribute to the field. 'Little did I know that with the help of my course coordinator and thesis supervisor, I'd make a scientific discovery in 2018. My master's thesis got published in the European Geosciences Union's 'Climate of the Past' journal in 2022. The findings in my scientific paper improve the accuracy of temperature measurements in the tropics. 'Having shared some lectures with environmental students back in 2015 while doing my undergraduate in natural science, I was encouraged to join the Environmental Society. 'Watching Leonardo DiCaprio's Before the Flood documentary in 2016 spurred me to decide to make climate action my life's work. There was a moment when he spoke to former US President Barack Obama, and they highlighted climate change as the most urgent issue of our time. The following year, I graduated from Trinity College Dublin and applied to pursue a Master's in climate change at Maynooth University. Samuel Awe, Capital & Estates Regional Sustainability Officer for HSE. Photograph Moya Nolan 'In my role as a regional sustainability officer with HSE Capital & Estates, I provide sustainable engineering advice and project management, and I recommend funding for hospitals to help reduce their carbon emissions. The priority areas we focus on are energy efficiency, water conservation, green environments and waste reduction. My job takes me across Dublin and the Midlands. Today I am visiting Tallaght University Hospital's Green Team. Green teams focus on promoting sustainability and reducing the environmental impact of healthcare services. 'We work with all kinds of hospitals, from large acute to community nursing units. I was delighted to see the HSE recently achieve certification to the ISO 50001 global energy management standard for its efforts in continuously improving energy efficiency and performance. 'I grew up in Tallaght, but Clontarf is home now. In my downtime, I enjoy long-distance running, especially half-marathons. After work, I enjoy cooking with my fiancée. Cleaning up is where I shine. HSE Capital and Estates Sustainable Infrastructure Office focuses on reducing energy and carbon emissions of buildings, along with providing support and guidance on improving green spaces and water conservation. Corporate net zero goals backed by data, governance and sustainability KPIs: Industry leaders at ET India Net Zero Forum 2025

New Delhi: Top Indian and multinational firms are embedding ESG and net zero targets into core operations, backed by measurable key performance indicators and structured governance, company executives said at the ET India Net Zero Forum 2025. Ankit Todi, Chief Sustainability Officer, Mahindra Group, said, 'The conversation on sustainability and net zero differs across sectors, but for us, it began with a simple question—how do we build planet-positive businesses? At Mahindra, that means integrating emission reduction, water conservation, waste management and material circularity into our core operations. We've been water positive since 2014, and aim for zero waste to landfill across all sites.' He added, 'We are focused on making our manufacturing as well as non-manufacturing sites zero waste and also undertake circularity of materials utilised. Sustainability measures should not be looked upon as expense.' Taruna Saxena, Head of Sustainability & Societal Initiatives, Nestlé India, said the company began its net zero journey in 2020 with a 2050 target. 'It is backed by strong governance, internal carbon pricing, and task forces across high-emission areas. Sustainability is now embedded into our global operations and tracked quarterly through clear KPIs,' she said. 'We set a target to cut emissions by 20% from our 2018 baseline by 2025—and we've already achieved it globally, despite strong market growth. Now, we're working toward a 50% reduction by 2030, closely monitoring progress across all markets,' Saxena said. She also noted that Nestlé has created sustainability cadres across business units and follows an operational master plan. Arvind Talan, Chief Financial Officer, Energy Efficiency Services, said growing awareness is being matched by action. 'Offshore wind was unheard of in India, but we now have our first 500 MW tender. Nuclear energy too has received a boost, with over ₹20,000 crore earmarked in the recent budget. These are capital-intensive areas, but the intent is clear—public and private sectors are coming together, and I'm confident we'll achieve our target of net zero 2070.' Ranjan Kumar, Director - Legal, Sustainability & Corporate Affairs, SKF India, said that integrating net zero targets into the company's ESG framework helps drive impact. 'In our net zero journey at SKF, we focus on three key metrics—carbon emissions, energy efficiency, and renewable conversion. We've aligned these with global standards like RE100, ISO 50001, and GHG protocols. This alignment strengthens our data, enabling informed decisions and building stakeholder confidence.' He added, 'ESG compliance is a strongly data supported framework. ESG framework which is data driven helps us take informed decisions which are reliable and accurate.' Ashok Kumar Shrivastava, Centre of Excellence – Head IMS & Sustainability, Reliance Jio Infocomm, said the company has expanded clean energy adoption and waste recycling. 'This year, we recycled 1,655 metric tonnes of non-hazardous waste for energy use and installed 23,600 distributed solar systems, generating 2.18 lakh MWh annually and reducing 5.9 lakh tonnes of CO₂ emissions. Our energy efficiency programme alone saved 1.25 lakh MWh in FY 2023–24,' he said. The panel discussion on 'Integrating ESG with Net-Zero Commitments: Corporate Leadership in a Changing World' showcased how businesses are designing long-term sustainability strategies that are aligned with national climate goals and global reporting standards.
