What to watch this week: ‘Gram Chikitsalay', ‘The Royals', and more
Prince Aviraaj falls for career-minded Sophia in this clash-of-cultures series. The eclectic cast has Bhumi Pednekar and Ishaan Khatter in the lead, and support from Zeenat Aman and Sakshi Tanwar. Created by Rangita and Ishita Pritish Nandy. (Netflix) A man honours his late mother by opening an Italian restaurant run by actual nonnas (grandmothers) as the chefs. Starring Vince Vaughn, Lorraine Bracco,Talia Shire, Brenda Vaccaro, Joe Manganiello and Susan Sarandon. Directed by Stephen Chbosky (The Perks of Being a Wallflower). (Netflix) A couple reunite in heaven. He was bedridden for a large part of his life and she took care of him. In heaven, the tables are turned: he's in his 30s and she's in her 80s. Starring Kim Hye-ja (The Light in Your Eyes) and Son Suk-ku (The Roundup; Nothing Serious). (Netflix) Actor and newly minted Padma Bhushan awardee Ajith Kumar stars in this action-comedy that entered the ₹ 100-crore club within five days of its theatrical release in April. Directed by Adhik Ravichandran, the film has Ajith playing a retired gangster who has to pick up the cudgels once again to help his son out. The cast also includes Trisha Krishnan and Arjun Das. (Netflix) TVF isn't known for fixing what isn't broken. Their latest series is squarely in Panchayat territory, a droll comedy-drama about an idealistic young doctor (Amol Parashar) who tries to revive a village clinic. Created by Deepak Kumar Mishra. (Amazon Prime) Jane Schoenbrun's 2024 film, I Saw the TV Glow, starring Justice Smith and Jack Haven, begins with dreamy unreality and ends with necessary struggle. It's a film that speaks to the trans experience, but in a complex, fractured manner. It's a shattering, haunting work, so unlike the explanation-driven American cinema of today that it seems to invent its own language. Schoenbrun instinctively arrives at a Lynchian kind of dread. Yet, I Saw the TV Glow is also achingly beautiful. Schoenbrun and cinematographer Eric K. Yue use saturated colours and shimmers of neon the way Gregg Araki, a pioneer of New Queer Cinema, did in the 1990s. (Netflix) Two members of a special forces group called Shadow Force break the rules by falling in love with each other. They have a child and are living a regular life. But then their old employer comes after them, and they're forced to go underground. Shadow Force has a standard action movie premise. But Joe Carnahan (Smokin' Aces, The Grey) has made a career out of tough actioners. And it will be intriguing seeing Kerry Washington (Scandal, Django Unchained) in fight mode. Her co-lead is Omar Sy, best known for playing the titular thief in the Netflix series Lupin. Also starring Mark Strong, Da'Vine Joy Randolph and Cliff 'Method Man' Smith. (In theatres)

‘Queens of Drama' Review: A Half-Century Feud
In the French musical romance 'Queens of Drama,' the offices of the Starlet Factory brim with hopefuls warming up for a singing competition show when the punk rocker Billie Kohler (Gio Ventura) struts in. Aching for pop stardom herself, Mimi Madamour (Louiza Aura), all curls and doe-eyed warmth, remarks to Billie that they are each wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with an image of an edgy 1980s singer. What looked to be a moment of an insta-crush turns into a snarky exchange, ending with each petulantly sticking a tongue out at the other. In 'Queens of Drama,' these soon-to-be tumultuous lovers meet more contemptuous than cute. The year of that encounter is 2005. But the director Alexis Langlois's unruly, ideas-freighted romance actually begins in 2055 as Mimi's No. 1 fan, SteevyShady (Bilal Hassani), recounts the couple's vexed love story. 'This is not about me,' Steevy, a video influencer, says with flair. But of course it is. And it's SteevyShady's role in the extended flashback that turns the queer romance into a meta-ride in pop-culture obsession, with nods to every letter in the L.G.B.T.Q.+ rainbow, and considerations both fond and disparaging of punk and pop music. With playful visual flourishes, a willfully garish palette and winks galore (including one to the French feminist writer Monique Wittig), Langlois's debut has stylistic ambition for days. But it's not as genre-fluent as 'Love Lies Bleeding' and 'I Saw the TV Glow,' or as swoon inducing as its volatile couple deserves.

Emma Stone Has Sweet Reaction to Jesse Eisenberg's Surprise Shout-Out at Indie Spirit Awards
Jesse Eisenberg shocked his former Zombieland costar Emma Stone with a sweet shout-out during his Best Screenplay acceptance speech at the Independent Spirit Awards. On Saturday, February 22, Eisenberg, 41, took home the writing trophy for his film A Real Pain, which Stone, 36, produced alongside her husband, Dave McCary, under their Fruit Tree production company. 'I met Emma when we were in Zombieland together in 2009 and since then I write little magazine articles and little things on McSweeney's, and she's the only person, I'm including my mom here, who would take little screenshots of it over the last 15 years and send me things like, 'This is such a funny line!'' he said in his speech. 'At the time, she was definitely, and still [is], the most famous I know, and yet also the most dedicated to encouraging me as a writer.' The camera then panned to Stone, who shyly smiled as Eisenberg continued to praise her talent and efforts in the industry. She even mouthed 'oh my God' as he deemed her his 'fairy godmother.' Kieran Culkin Gushes About Working With Ex-Girlfriend Emma Stone: 'She's a Really Wonderful Person' 'I think about her not as my producer, but like a fairy godmother that I am riding the coattails of her goodwill,' he added. 'And I think it's so important that somebody like her, who is so unbelievably successful in mainstream movies, look for people like me and Julio [Torres], and Jane [Schoenbrun], to try to produce our movies with all the goodwill that she's amassed so rightly and deservedly over the last several years. Thanks, Emma.' Stone looked teary-eyed as the camera found her once again. She threw her hands up and seemingly told Eisenberg from her seat, 'Stop. What the hell?' The Oscar-winning actress looked lovely in an Emilia Wickstead ensemble, which featured a beaded and plunging black top and coordinating green skirt. She paired the look with black heels, Irene Neuwirth jewelry and her new pixie haircut. Stone was at the Santa Monica award show in celebration of A Real Pain as well as I Saw the TV Glow, Problemista and Fantasmas, which she also executive produced. Fruit Tree recently signed a first-look film deal at Universal. 'I've long admired Emma's versatility as an actress, fearlessly embodying every role. Paired with Dave's distinctive comedic voice and creative instincts, we've seen the incredible work they have accomplished together. We're thrilled to support the creative ambition and vision that Emma and Dave will continue to bring to projects behind the camera,' said NBC Universal chairman Donna Langley. Stone and McCary, 39, added, 'Fruit Tree was founded with a passion for supporting ambitious filmmakers and bold storytelling. Working with the amazing team at Universal allows us to push those boundaries even further. We couldn't be more grateful to Donna, Peter, and Erik for their partnership, and we are looking forward to what the future holds together.' The duo tied the knot in September 2020 and welcomed daughter Louise Jean in March 2021. Prior to marrying McCary, 42, Stone dated A Real Pain star Kieran Culkin as well as actor Andrew Garfield. Culkin — who is nominated for an Oscar for his role in A Real Pain — said Stone was a major reason why he did the movie, admitting to Vogue in September 2024 that he almost dropped out due to family obligations. (He shares two young children with his wife Jazz Charton.) Emma Stone and Husband Dave McCary's Low-Key Romance: A Timeline He recalled talking to Stone just weeks before the shoot was due to start: 'She goes: 'If you don't do it, the entire movie falls apart. But that's not your responsibility. You shouldn't feel that burden at all.'' Culkin marveled at her approach: 'She was nice enough to let me off the hook. So I guess I'm…in?' When he flew to Poland to film, Stone made sure she and McCary were even on the same flight for extra support.
