Kolkata Man, Who Filed Case Against Influencer Sharmistha Panoli, Booked Over ‘Hate Speech'

Last Updated: Wajahat Khan is facing two complaints — one of which was filed by advocate Vineet Jindal, though it has not yet been registered as a case/FIR. The Kolkata Police registered a case against Wajahat Khan, who had lodged the complaint that led to the arrest of Instagram influencer Sharmishta Panoli, for delivering 'hate speech" on social media and hurting religious sentiments. Panoli, a law student and social media influencer, was arrested in Gurugram on Friday (May 30) and brought to Kolkata, where she was presented before a magistrate and remanded to 14 days of judicial custody. Sources told CNN-News18 that Kolkata Police received a complaint against Khan a day ago, following which he was booked under relevant provisions of the newly implemented Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). It further stated that Khan, who heads the Kolkata-based Rashidi Foundation, is facing two complaints — one of which was filed by advocate Vineet Jindal, though it has not yet been registered as a case/FIR. Advocate Jindal filed an official complaint with the Delhi Police and Cyber Crime Unit against Wajahat Khan, accusing him of online hate speech, religious defamation, and abusive content under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the IT Act. Sharmistha Panoli's Arrest Panoli's arrest came in response to a complaint filed at the Garden Reach Police Station on May 15, alleging that she posted a video that insulted religious sentiments and promoted communal disharmony. In the video, Panoli criticised Bollywood actors—particularly Muslim stars—for their silence on Operation Sindoor, a military strike targeting terror camps in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The video, which included abusive language and communal remarks, sparked significant backlash online and was subsequently taken down. Panoli later issued an apology. The Kolkata Police on Sunday defended the arrest of the Instagram influencer, stating that legal action was taken not for expressing national sentiments, but for allegedly delivering hate speech and abusive language in a video. In a detailed clarification justifying her arrest, the police noted that hate speech and abusive language 'should not be misconstrued as freedom of speech and expression" First Published: June 02, 2025, 17:04 IST

Anna University sexual assault: Chennai court sentences convict A Gnanasekaran to 30 years in jail, fines him ₹90,000

The Chennai court sentenced A Gnanasekaran, the convict in the Anna University sexual assault case, to life imprisonment on Monday. Judge M Rajalakshmi said that the accused must remain in prison for at least 30 years without remission, news agency PTI reported. On 28 May, a Mahila Court in Chennai had pronounced Gnanasekaran guilty in the Anna University woman student sexual assault case, with the prosecution seeking 'maximum punishment' for him. The court awarded sentences in respect of each 11 charges proved by the prosecution against him. The sentences run concurrently, Mahila Court judge Rajalakshmi added, the report said. The judge, while convicting Gnanasekaran, said that he sought a lenient sentence claiming he was the sole bread-winner of the family and prosecution objected to it and sought maximum punishment. The Consultant counsel of Gnanasekaran, however, said that they will be appealing the court's sentence. According to a PTI report, BR Jayaprakash Narayanan said, '…We will be appealing this punishment of 30-year period. We will be going on appeal on the receipt of the judgment documents and valid papers." A second-year student of Anna University was sexually assaulted on the Anna University campus in December. After an investigation, the Chennai Police had arrested Gnanesekaran in connection with the case. The case came to light after the victim lodged a complaint before the All Women Police Station in Kotturpuram in Chennai on 23 December last year. The student alleged that an unidentified man had threatened and sexually assaulted her when she was talking to her friend on campus. The Mahila court framed charges against Gnanasekaran under various sections of the BNS, including sexual harassment, BNSS, IT Act and the Tamil Nadu Prevention of Women Harassment Act. Hailing the court's decision, Congress MP Jothimani told IANS, '…Today, the punishment has been announced – 30 years of imprisonment for the culprit. The way justice has been served gives satisfaction not only to me but to every woman in the country, especially because the case was fast-tracked.' The sensational case had triggered a political row over Gnanasekaran's alleged connections with the ruling DMK in the state, although the party president and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, MK Stalin, had in January said he was only a sympathiser and supporter, and not a member of the Dravidian organisation. After Gnanasekaran was convicted on 28 May, in a post on X, CM Stalin had hailed the state police, investigating officers, and government lawyers for the expeditious verdict in the Anna University sexual assault case. He also slammed the opposition parties, which had made allegations against the ruling DMK over the incident, and said attempts were made to play 'cheap politics'.

Two Haryana men get 2 years for impersonating Singapore immigration, duping Indians

A special judicial magistrate CBI court in Panchkula has sentenced two Haryana residents, Aditya Bhardwaj alias Bhanu from Kurukshetra and Deepak Jain alias DC of Gurugram, to two and a half years of imprisonment. They were found guilty in a sophisticated fraud case registered by the Delhi CBI on September 27, 2016. The charges included cheating, forgery, criminal conspiracy, and violations under the IT Act. The verdict followed a complaint filed by Mohammad Afsar Alam, then an inspector with the CBI in New Delhi. The court convicted Aditya Bhardwaj under Sections 120B, 419, 420, and 468 of the IPC, while Deepak Jain was found guilty under Section 120-B, 420, 468 of IPC, and 66-D of the IT Act. Both were also levied fines of ₹5,000 and ₹20,000 respectively. According to the prosecution, the accused orchestrated a scheme to defraud Indian nationals residing or working in Singapore. They used spoofed calls, impersonating Singapore immigration authorities, to falsely accuse victims of providing incorrect information on airport disembarkation forms. Threatening criminal cases and deportation, they coerced victims into paying 'settlement fees' or 'fines' via Western Union money transfers, even demanding confidential money transfer control numbers (MTCNs) to facilitate illicit withdrawals. A preliminary inquiry identified five fraudulent transactions where money from three Singapore-based victims was withdrawn in Kurukshetra, often using misused or forged IDs. Investigations revealed these transactions, and others, were processed through sub-agents of Reliance Money Express Limited. Aditya Bhardwaj's firm, M/s Guru Kripa Tours and Travels, was implicated, with Bhardwaj and absconding accomplice Harnek Singh conspiring to misuse IDs and forge documents to withdraw funds from Western Union outlets. During interrogation, Bhardwaj disclosed he received defrauded money via Reliance Money Express credits into his firm's HDFC bank account, withdrew it through ATMs, kept his share, and forwarded the rest to Deepak Jain, against whom a supplementary charge-sheet was filed.
