Care home staff and residents walk 7000 miles for cancer

Participants from Meallmore care homes, including Kelvinside Manor in Glasgow and Mearns House in Newton Mearns, took part in the fundraising challenge. Cillian Hennessey, chief executive of Meallmore, said: "I'm so incredibly proud of everyone who took part in this amazing challenge. "This result really showcases the remarkable enthusiasm and spirit of our teams, as well as of our residents and local communities who joined in the fun. "There were some wonderful displays of camaraderie, determination, and teamwork over the week, which was a joy to see." The challenge, I Would Walk 1000 Meallmore Miles, was initially intended as a wellbeing event to encourage exercise and team spirit. However, the response far surpassed expectations, and even residents and families also participated alongside staff, with ages ranging from six to 102. Participants contributed to the total through walking, running, and even canoeing, with some residents taking part in wheelchairs and trishaws. Special events were organised across the care homes to encourage participation, including themed days, group walks, and celebrations. In the end, the fundraising efforts culminated in a total of £7000 for Cancer Research UK, a charity chosen by both staff and residents in recognition of its important work. "A huge well done to all those who racked up these miles in any way possible, as well as a special mention to everyone who supported and donated. "7,000 miles is an enormous distance, and it really is something that we can all be proud of. "The bar has been raised for next year."
