Matchup of All-Stars, NL's top teams when Cubs, Brewers open series
July 28 - It seems only appropriate that a three-game series between the teams with the two best records in the National League begins on Monday with a stellar pitching matchup. The Chicago Cubs will send All-Star left-hander Matthew Boyd (11-3, 2.20 ERA) to face the host Milwaukee Brewers, who will send All-Star right-handed rookie Jacob Misiorowski (4-1, 2.45) to the mound. The teams are tied atop of the NL Central with identical 62-43 records. Chicago took two of three from the Chicago White Sox over the weekend, while Milwaukee avoided a three-game sweep with a 3-2 win over the visiting Miami Marlins on Sunday. The Cubs have won three of the teams' first five meetings this season, including two of three in Milwaukee in early May. Chicago left fielder Ian Happ is looking forward to this week's return trip. "It'll be a great atmosphere," Happ said. "We're going up there just trying to play our game and good baseball. And I think there'll be a lot of noise around it. But we're just gonna play another series in July." Boyd will take the mound after tossing seven scoreless innings in a 6-0 victory over the Kansas City Royals last Tuesday. The 34-year-old Boyd enters Monday's contest with a career-best run of 23 consecutive scoreless innings, which is the longest active streak in the majors. "Somehow he's just gotten better in this stretch, and he's just overwhelming hitters," Cubs manager Craig Counsell said. "It's just quality pitch after quality pitch. I think anytime you get in a streak like this, that's what you're doing. There's no let up. No matter what's going on, it's a quality pitch. It just keeps coming at you. Milwaukee first baseman Andrew Vaughn is a career 1-for-8 against Boyd, who is 1-1 with a 9.95 ERA in 12 2/3 innings over three career starts versus the Brewers. Chicago third baseman Matt Shaw enters the game on a tear after struggling in the weeks before the All-Star break. Shaw extended his hitting streak to a career-high nine games on Sunday and is batting .444 (12-for-27) with two doubles, four home runs and 10 RBIs during that span. The rookie will look to continue the hot streak against Misiorowski, who is making his seventh career start. Misiorowski, 23, struck out seven over 3 2/3 scoreless innings against the Seattle Mariners last Tuesday. He was pulled after 64 pitches, and manager Pat Murphy said the team is monitoring his workload. "Obviously, I want to go six or seven (innings)," Misiorowski said. "But they're looking deeper, season-wise. I'm always going to be competitive and want to get as deep as I can, but it is what it is." Misiorowski is making his first appearance against the Cubs. He has 40 strikeouts in his first six starts covering 29 1/3 innings. "He's just broken the shell, man," Murphy said. "He's just out of the egg, all arms and legs. He's still got gooey stuff coming off him. He's something special." While the Brewers' starting rotation is overflowing with talented options, the team's offense has also risen to the occasion. Center fielder Jackson Chourio, 21, extended his hitting streak to 20 games on Sunday, becoming the 13th major leaguer 21 years or younger since 1901 to have a 20-plus game hit streak. The franchise record is Paul Molitor's 39-game hitting streak in 1987. --Field Level Media

Cubs shut down White Sox 6-1 in second game of Crosstown Classic
Ian Happ and Matt Shaw homered in the seventh inning, helping Cade Horton and the Chicago Cubs beat the Chicago White Sox 6-1 on Saturday night. There was no score when Happ's one-out shot off Jordan Leasure (3-6) went just over the wall in right-center for his 14th homer. Nico Hoerner hit a two-out single ahead of Shaw's drive over the home bullpen in left. Shaw also walked with the bases loaded in the eighth. The rookie is batting .478 (11 for 23) with four homers and nine RBIs during an eight-game hitting streak since the All-Star break. The Cubs (61-43) moved into a tie for the NL Central lead with Milwaukee, which lost 7-4 to Miami. They had dropped four of five, including a 12-5 loss to the last-place White Sox on Friday. The White Sox played without center fielder Luis Robert Jr. for the second straight game. Robert is dealing with some adductor soreness. The White Sox wasted a sharp performance by Aaron Civale, who struck out six in five innings at Rate Field. The right-hander threw 69 pitches, 47 for strikes. The White Sox threatened in the first, putting runners on the corners with one out, but Miguel Vargas grounded into an inning-ending double play. The Cubs lead 76-75 in the all-time series between the teams. Sean Burke (4-8, 4.19 ERA) takes the mound for the White Sox on Sunday. Ben Brown (4-7, 6.48) goes for the Cubs.

Matt Shaw, Ian Happ go deep as Cubs cruise past White Sox in crosstown clash
July 27 - Ian Happ and Matt Shaw homered to back 6 1/3 strong innings from Cade Horton as the visiting Chicago Cubs defeated the Chicago White Sox 6-1 on Saturday. The Cubs out-hit the White Sox 10-6 to even the crosstown series at one game apiece. Dansby Swanson delivered a two-out, two-run single in the eighth to stretch the advantage to 5-0 before Shaw worked a bases-loaded walk to drive in a run. Shaw had three RBIs, Swanson added two and Happ had two hits. Mike Tauchman paced the White Sox with two hits. He smacked a solo home run to lead off the ninth, his second homer in as many games, as Chicago avoided a shutout. Starters Cade Horton of the Cubs and Aaron Civale of the White Sox matched zeros over the first few innings, setting the tone for a brisk pace game that contrasted with the White Sox' 12-5 rout in the series opener Friday. Civale retired the first 11 Cubs batters before Seiya Suzuki singled with two outs in the fourth. He surrendered consecutive singles to open the fifth but escaped trouble with two groundouts and a flyout. Civale scattered three hits and didn't walk a batter while matching a season high with six strikeouts over five shutout innings. Horton contended with early basepath traffic of his own but also emerged unscathed. The rookie right-hander worked out of a two-on, one-out jam in the first inning and allowed a leadoff single in the second before retiring 10 straight White Sox. Horton (4-3) got the first out of the seventh inning before yielding to the bullpen. He spaced four hits, one walk and three strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings. Tyler Alexander pitched a scoreless sixth for the White Sox. Jordan Leasure entered the game in the seventh but encountered trouble after getting the first out. Happ smacked a solo homer to right center field and Shaw delivered a two-run blast three batters later. Leasure (3-6) allowed three runs and three hits in 2/3 of an inning. White Sox center fielder Luis Robert Jr. (sore adductor) missed his second straight game. The Cubs clinched the season series, winning for the fourth time in five meetings against the White Sox. --Field Level Media
