Ian Machado Garry: Leon Edwards should retire, clearly doesn't have love for it anymore

Ian Machado Garry: Leon Edwards should retire, clearly doesn't have love for it anymore Ian Machado Garry doesn't think former UFC champ Leon Edwards can hang with the rising contenders anymore. After going on a 13-fight unbeaten streak, Edwards (22-5 MMA, 14-4 UFC) has dropped back-to-back fights – losing his welterweight title to Belal Muhammad at UFC 304, followed by a submission loss to Sean Brady at UFC Fight Night 255 in March. Judging by the dominant nature of his loss to Brady, Machado Garry (16-1 MMA, 9-1 UFC) questions Edwards' fighting spirit. "If I was Leon, I would be retiring," Machado Garry told talkSPORT MMA. "He clearly doesn't have the love for it anymore, clearly doesn't have the talent for it against the best young youth in the division. Just kick it in, say you were a world champion and go off into the streets of Birmingham and tell the people the story of what was, not what is." As for his own career, 27-year-old Machado Garry remains confident that he will realize his goal of becoming UFC champion. "It should have come back in UFC 315 in Canada. That's the truth: It should have," Machado Garry said of a title shot. "But they decided to go with a guy who's been out for a year and coming off a broken arm and not being active for a year. But that's up to them as a business, and they can do what they want. All I know is I was present for the world title fight between Belal Muhammad and Jack Della Maddalena in Canada, and had I fought that night, I would have a belt wrapped around my waist. That's what I fully believe."

(Photo by Jeff Bottari/Zuffa LLC) Michael Morales might have been incredibly nervous on Saturday night when he faced former UFC welterweight title challenger Gilbert Burns in the main event of UFC Vegas 106. Still, he contained that uneasiness, ultimately putting Burns away in the first round. After the fight, the undefeated Morales set his sights on Ian Machado Garry, another rising star in the UFC's welterweight division. (Photo by Jeff Bottari/Zuffa LLC) "I've talked about Ian (Machado) Garry a lot," Morales said via an interpreter following his win over Burns. "That's the fight I've always wanted to fight, but I know that he won his last fight and he's looking up at the rankings, so that might not happen. "The biggest thing is being healthy and recovering from a couple of strikes that I had and to be in Guadalajara, and I think that fight, if they're able to make it, I would love to fight whoever in Guadalajara. 'I think at this point, taking advantage of opportunties, and being grateful for opportunities, (I would like to fight) the sixth, the fifth, the fourth in the rankings.' Morales entered UFC Vegas 106 as the No. 12 fighter in the official UFC welterweight rankings, while Burns checked in at No. 8. Morales will move up a few notches when those rankings are updated this week. As for Machado Garry, he is No. 6 in those rankings following his April decision win over Carlos Prates. As for the Guadalajara card. That event, UFC 320, is scheduled to take place on September 13 at Arena Guadalajara in Mexico. That event, also known as UFC Noche, does not have any bouts officially booked. LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - MAY 17: (R-L) Gilbert Burns of Brazil punches Michael Morales of Ecuador in a ... "They don't call him 'Durinho' for nothing. Whoever has to be in the cage with that guy, they would feel the nerves. He's a guy who has fought for a title, the people that he has fought throughout his career. It was important for me to prove to him that the tough guy tonight was me.' (Photo by Jeff Bottari/Zuffa LLC) I wrote the following about Morales's performance on Saturday. With his win he moved to 18-0 as a pro. His stoppage of Burns also earned the 25-year-old his second consecutive 'Performance of the Night' bonus. "Michael Morales was 17-0 and a massive betting favorite when he walked to the Octagon for his matchup with veteran competitor and former welterweight title challenger Gilbert Burns. As soon as the fighters engaged, it was clear that Morales was the bigger man. However, Burns had a massive advantage in experience, making his pro debut when Morales was just 12 years old. Well, that experience did not help Burns as Morales's size and power proved to be too much for Burns. "Morales looked calm and composed against Burns, and when he hurt his opponent with a right hook around Burns's guard, he followed up with a flurry of punches that left the referee no choice but to wave things off before the four-minute mark of the first stanza. 'Morales might only be 25, but he'll join the UFC welterweight elite with his win over Burns.' We will have more on what's next for Michael Morales, Ian Machado Garry and UFC 320 (UFC Noche) as news breaks.

Jack Della Maddalena's coach reacts after Ian Machado Garry goads new UFC champion

Jack Della Maddalena 's coach has said his fighter will refuse to 'bite' on taunts from Ian Machado Garry, who claimed he would 'box the ears off' the new UFC champion. Della Maddalena outpointed Belal Muhammad to win the title last weekend, in the main event of UFC 317, securing victory with sublime striking and defensive wrestling. However, Machado Garry was not as impressed by the Australian as some observers were, saying after the bout: 'You have a new champion in Jack Della Maddalena. He had a great performance, but sloppy. 'You have a tall, blonde Irishman who's ready to take over the UFC and get that belt, and I will smoke Jack Della Maddalena. I'll box the ears off him.' Machado Garry did, however, acknowledge that 'JDM' is expected to defend the belt against Islam Makhachev first, when the Russian moves up to 170lb after vacating the lightweight title this week. In any case, Della Maddalena's coach Ben Vickers jabbed back at Machado Garry, telling Submission Radio: 'We're not in this business to be celebrities, and as Jack said in his post-fight speech, we just want to win fights and be the best. 'Jack loves scrapping, Jack loves training. We all love the sport and the process. [Machado Garry] can carry on doing his thing. He should concentrate more on finishing fights, especially fights that he's dominating. He needs to stop flying around the world trying to be a celebrity, and get in the gym and get some power and figure out how to finish fights. 'His time would be better spent doing that than trying to wind Jack up. You think Jack's going to bite on any of that stuff? He doesn't care, man. He's the most chilled-out dude in the world. So yeah, it's all just a bit silly really.' Vickers added that he does not expect Machado Garry to 'ever own' a UFC title, though the Irishman is well placed in the welterweight division. The 27-year-old bounced back from his first career loss, a narrow decision against the unbeaten Shavkat Rakhmonov in December, by outpointing Carlos Prates in April. That result put Machado Garry sixth in the rankings. Realistically, Machado Garry might have to fight again before challenging for the gold, with UFC president Dana White confirming this week that JDM will defend against Makhachev later this year. Ahead of Machado Garry in the rankings are former champions Muhammad (#1), Leon Edwards (#4) and Kamaru Usman (#5), as well as Sean Brady (#2) and Rakhmonov (#3). Rakhmonov was due to challenge Muhammad for the belt in December, but the latter sustained a bone infection, leading Machado Garry to step in. Then, when Rakhmonov vs Muhammad was planned for this spring, the former suffered an injury. That led to Muhammad's defence against Della Maddalena, as the Aussie took the gold from the Palestinian-American during his first defence. With that result, the 28-year-old Della Maddalena extended his win streak to a remarkable 18 fights, dating back to 2016. That streak began immediately after he started his career with two straight losses.

MONTREAL – Daniel Santos met the media Saturday after his win over Jeong Yeong Lee at UFC 315. Santos (12-2 MMA, 3-1 UFC), who was fighting for the first time in nearly two years after a series of health-related cancellations, swept the scorecards on Lee (11-3 MMA, 2-2 UFC) for his third straight win. Afterward, he said having UFC welterweight contender Ian Machado Garry in his corner played a difference in the fight. "Ian's energy, his intelligence, his fight IQ – we sat down and watched my opponent's fights for five minutes and he literally mapped everything out," Santos said at his post-fight news conference. "I owe a lot of this victory to him – and the entire team. But man – (Garry) is something else." Garry was in Montreal as a backup fighter for the welterweight title fight in the main event. Ian Machado Garry Says I Won't Accept Anything But a Title Fight

Staying relevant in the UFC's welterweight division takes more than just talent—it demands presence, momentum, and timing. Ian Machado Garry proved just that with a high-stakes win at UFC Kansas City, reminding fans and critics alike that he's still very much in the title picture. After suffering a defeat in his previous outing to the undefeated Shavkat Rakhmonov, this latest performance helped silence doubters and reignite his climb toward the top. Machado Garry rebounded in decisive fashion, defeating Fighting Nerds teammate Carlos Prates in a closely contested five-round bout. The win marked a crucial turnaround after his setback against Rakhmonov. In a recent interview with Full Send MMA's Shawty Mac, Machado Garry made headlines—not for who he beat, but for what he demanded next. When asked, 'So realistically then, Belal wins. Will you accept any other fight than a title shot?' Machado Garry responded, 'No. I don't think I need to. I believe I'm the biggest name in the division. You know what I mean? Shavkat's injured. He's not going to be fighting this year. You know what I mean? I don't see anyone who's bigger or anyone who's more interesting to put on a pay-per-view main event and sell out a stadium. There is no one bigger.' Ian Machado GarryGetty Images As Machado Garry pointed out, Shavkat Rakhmonov is currently sidelined after tearing his MCL at UFC 310, removing one of the top contenders from the immediate title conversation. With that opportunity open, Machado Garry isn't wasting time. Just weeks removed from his most recent fight, he's already in Canada, prepared to weigh in as the backup for the UFC 304 main event between Belal Muhammad and Jack Della Maddalena. For Ian Machado Garry, the mission is clear: title shot or nothing.
