SSMP edge SSTMI in dramatic Academy Divison final
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Pahang Sports School (SSMP) held their nerve to edge defending champions Tunku Mahkota Ismail Sports School (SSTMI) 12-10 in a nail-biting final to clinch the Super Schools Rugby Academy Division title yesterday (July 20).
Tries from Airel Azhar and Ibrahim Bakhtiar and a conversion by Adam Hadafie was was enough to ensure SSMP took home the trophy and RM10,000 prize money.
Haikal Ismail scored a try for SSTMI which was converted by Razali Rizal. The latter also converted a penalty.
SSMP head coach Yusli Ashan said he could not have asked for more from his players.
Airel was also claimed the Most Valuable Player award for the final, which earned him RM500.
"This win is the result of the hard work, discipline and teamwork the boys' have put in throughout the season," said Yusli.
"I am very proud of this team, especially our younger players who showed extraordinary character in the final. They are the future of Malaysian rugby."
SSTMI took home RM5,000 for their efforts this season. Akademi Ragbi Selangor and SMK King Edward VII, rounded out the top-four this season.
Super Schools Rugby, organised by Evervive Sdn Bhd, is in its 10th season this year.
