Three men convicted for stealing idols from Thiruthuraipoondi Temple in 2009
The Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court, Egmore, has convicted three men and sentenced them to three-year imprisonment for breaking into a Thiruthuraipoondi temple and stealing idols from there in 2009. According to the Idol Wing CID Police, the culprits broke open the iron rods of the window of the Pavalaotheeswarar Temple in Thiruthuraipoondi and main door of sanctum sanctorum and committed theft of one Maragatha Lingam and two golden ornaments in the night of February 19, 2009. Maragatha lingam and two golden ornaments worth Rs 2.06 lakh were stolen from the temple. On the complaint of K. Kanagasabai, then executive officer, a case was registered by police. During a vehicle check on October 25, 2009 at Koyambedu bus stand, accused Ramesh and Senthil were arrested by the police of Idol Wing CID, Chennai and the properties were seized. Subsequently seven other accused were arrested and remanded. During the trial, two of the accused died and four of them went absconding. The trial was conducted against the remaining three. Idol Wing Police said the accused Vaith alias Vaithiyalingam, Melinsagayaraj and Raja alias Patchi Raja were convicted and sentenced to three- year imprisonment with fine.

Accused in antique idol theft case nabbed in Mumbai
The Idol Wing CID arrested a person in Mumbai for his alleged involvement in the smuggling of an antique idol in Pudukottai. When a Idol Wing CID team was inspecting vehicles at the Alathur Junction on Pudukkottai-Tiruchi Main Road on March 19, 2024, they intercepted a vehicle and arrested Ajithkumar and two others, besides seizing an antique Amman metal idol worth ₹20 crore from them. During this, Raja alias Manojkumar fled the spot. The investigation revealed that Raja worked abroad. A Look Out Circular was issued against him on April 2 this year. In the early hours of May 16, Raja was detained at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Airport in Mumbai. After receiving the information, the officers of the Idol Wing CID arrested him in Mumbai on May 18 and brought him to Tamil Nadu. He was remanded in judicial custody by the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate, Madurai.

15 years after theft, officials stop auction of Nagai temple idol in Netherlands
THANJAVUR/CHENNAI: Timely action by the Idol Wing CID prevented the auction of an antique metal idol valued around Rs 8 crore at an art exhibition held in the Netherlands, which was stolen from a temple in Nagapattinam around 15 years ago. The Kannappa Nayanar metal idol was secured by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs on March 23, 2025, after the intervention by the Idol Wing CID and the Archaeological Survey of India. Legal proceedings are now under way to bring the idol back to India, a press note said. The idol had been stolen 15 years ago from Arulmigu Agneeswarar Swamy Temple in Thirupugalur in Nagapattinam, with a case registered at Thittachery Police Station, and investigations have been ongoing since then. The 11th to 12th century idol measures 64 cm in height, 25 cm in width and weighs 23 kg. Recently, the idol wing CID came to know that the idol was kept at the European Fine Arts Exhibition-2025 held in Maastricht city of Netherlands and that it was up for auction. Immediately, the wing took up the issue with the police officials in the Netherlands and the officials of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to prevent the auction. The idol's present market value is around `8 crore, the Idol Wing CID sources said.

Timely action by TN Idol Wing CID prevents auction of Antique idol in Europe
Chennai, May 6 (UNI) Timely action taken by the Idol Wing CID of the Tamil Nadu police prevented the auction of a priceless antique metal idol in the Netherlands (Europe). An official release here said the Kannappa Nayanar metal idol was stolen from Arulmigu Agneeswaraswamy temple at Thirupugalur in Nagapattinam district 15 years ago by unknown culprits. After registering a case in Augut 2010, the Idol Wing CID during elaborate investigations received information that the idol was kept at The European Fine Art Exhibition-2025, held at Maastricht, the Netherlands for auction. Immediately, the Idol Wing CID took up with the police officials of the Netherlands and officers of Archaeological Survey of India to stop the auction. Due to this timely action, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Netherlands and Dutch, took custody of Kannappa Nayanar Idol on March 23, 2025. Legal procedures have been initiated to repatriate the idol from the Netherlands to India. UNI GV 1725
