Sali Hughes on beauty: tinted SPFs are a game-changer – but proceed with caution

Sunscreens have caught some colour, acquiring a little makeup coverage in the form of tinted SPFs. Until now, these have been relatively few and far between. Australian sunscreen specialists Ultra Violette changed the game with the launch of the excellent Daydream Screen SPF50 (£38) a few summers ago. Now, a new batch is launching. The Guardian's journalism is independent. We will earn a commission if you buy something through an affiliate link. Learn more. Supergoop! is the first cab off the rank with Protec(tint) Daily Tint SPF50 (£40). The best thing about this very sheer tint is the shade lineup, which is well considered and natural-looking across the board (24N is a perfect match for me). However, skin type matters. It will best suit someone with balanced or slightly dry skin, since the finish will look too moist for oilier types, and cling to any flakiness on very dry skin. Sensitive skins and eyes generally fare best with mineral sunscreens, and Merit Beauty has them covered. The Uniform SPF50 (pictured, £33) comes in a generous 50ml helping and although coverage is still very sheer, it does blend beautifully and realistically. Again, shades are thoughtfully chosen (I'm 26) and all leave a very pretty eggshell sheen that sits at the halfway point between matte and glowy. If your skin is relatively clear and even, it's ideal. But if you'd like a mineral sunscreen with more redness coverage, try Ilia's terrific Super Serum Skin Tint SPF30 (£42), which behaves more like a foundation and has a huge shade lineup for all. Beauty of Joseon's Daily Tinted Fluid Sunscreen SPF30 (£17) went viral upon launch and if you're balanced to combination in type and would like a well-priced sunscreen that imparts a sheer, slightly shiny glow, then it's well worth a go. But dry skins shouldn't attempt this without plenty of moisturising skincare beneath, which brings me to the rub of the matter. While tinted sunscreens are of the same standard as regular SPF products, their effectiveness is identically dependent on applying enough: two longest finger lengths of sunscreen is adequate for face and neck. And so in order to be properly protected, one would have to apply so much tinted sunscreen as to appear caked in makeup (imagine applying that much foundation and you'll get the idea – you'd look like a TikTok influencer). It's for this reason that I would always suggest applying a tinted product over a regular untinted sunscreen, in a belt and braces approach.

Ukraine: 'We Russian soldiers came to the conclusion that desertion was the only solution'

Once Russian soldiers in Ukraine, the two men fled the battlefield. Ilia Veitsler, 22, and Danil Arkhipov, 24, are among the few dozen Russian deserters who have found refuge in Europe. "If Putin wins this war, he will have carte blanche for further offensives. He must be stopped! That's also why I deserted," said Danil, with a determined tone, but also a haunted gaze, speaking over coffee in Paris. "On the front lines, I understood that this invasion of Ukraine was a crime against humanity, against a brother nation, so I refused to participate in it," said Ilia, with the same composure, speaking alongside his wife in the Eastern French city of Metz, where they now live after fleeing across Europe. Despite the risks, Ilia and Danil spoke openly, without hiding their identities. Sharing their stories publicly was a form of psychological release. They are wanted by Moscow, and they also hoped that publicizing their experiences would guarantee them some form of safety. "The Kremlin's special services agents in Europe are less likely to target a well-known deserter than a hidden one," the two men argued.

Aljamain Sterling can't bet against Ilia Topuria at UFC 317: 'Who's stopping this guy?'

Aljamain Sterling can't bet against Ilia Topuria at UFC 317: 'Who's stopping this guy?' Aljamain Sterling thinks Ilia Topuria has proven too unstoppable to lose at UFC 317. Topuria (16-0 MMA, 8-0 UFC), who relinquished the featherweight title in February, meets former champion Charles Oliveira (35-10 MMA, 23-10 UFC) for the vacant lightweight title in the June 28 headliner from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Topuria is coming off back-to-back knockouts of Alexander Volkanovski and Max Holloway in title fights. With Topuria's power and Oliveira's tendency to take damage in fights, Sterling worries for the Brazilian. "Oliveira gets dropped every fight – just about every fight ... the last eight fights I would say," Sterling said on his YouTube channel. "With that said, we know Ilia Topuria can crack. We've seen him get dropped before by Jai Herbert, came back. That was the first time he fought at 155. He says he feels better at 155, his power is way different at 155. We know he could already crack at '45. "How is that power going to translate into at 155? If he could touch Charles the way he hits everybody else, I think it's a bad night, and I think Ilia is a two-division champion. But the grappling department, we haven't seen anyone force the grappling issue against Ilia, and I wonder if 'Do Bronx' will try to do that to see if he can gas him out, and take away some of the pop from his punches." Oliveira is no stranger to defying the odds. He holds finishes over the likes of Dustin Poirier, Justin Gaethje, Beneil Dariush and Michael Chandler, but Sterling sees Topuria in prime form. "This is a hard one," Sterling said. "I like Ilia in this one, but it's hard to count out 'Do Bronx.' 'Do Bronx,' I still think, he's him. But then I said that about Max (Holloway), I said that about Volk. I'm not saying that those guys were going to win against Ilia, but you say that those guys are still 'them,' and then Ilia goes out and does that to them. You're like, f*ck. Who's stopping this guy?"

OleHenriksen's Pout Preserve Peptide Lip Treatment, because TikTok is all over this high-shine, buttery formula. Like a lip gloss, pout preserve offers a mirror-like finish in colors that'll go with all your makeup moods. Its formula sets it apart from other lippies, though, as it's full of peptides and kokum butter to soften the lips and help smooth fine lines. Promising review: "Love this lip balm/treatment. I bought the 'strawberry sorbet' color/flavor, and it smells and tastes delicious. The product itself is very moisturizing and hydrating. I can pop it on with just lip liner, wear it by itself, or with a full lip look. Very versatile. It's been a great purse lippie. I've been using it so much that I had to force myself to put it away to use my other lip balms/treatments in my collection. Would repurchase!" —GogoramaPrice: $22 (available in eight shades) Benefit Cosmetics' Super Setting Spray, just in case your preferred skin texture lives between blurred and matte. Much like the brand's beloved Porefessional Primer, this setting spray helps to minimize the appearance of pores, lock makeup in place, and decrease shine with just a few spritzes. I wanna say it is a dewy finish, but just add the powder after you've sprayed it and make sure it's dry so you have that matte finish. It also mists evenly so you don't have big drops on your face that can ruin your makeup!!" —DanielaPrice: $16 (also available in full size for $35) Ilia's Super Serum Skin Tint for the makeup lovers who enjoy playing with blush, bronzer, and eyeshadow, but detest the feeling of a full-coverage foundation. I love the color scheme and the glitters are perfect if you like to do a wash style or even packing it on. I don't remember Stila releasing eyeshadows in the past that were this pigmented and great quality. The pans are on the smaller side, but so, so worth it. I hope they create more color combinations because the formulation is *chef's kiss*." —Ulta CustomerPrice: $30 (available in three versions) Nyx's Brow Glue that locks brow hairs into place all. day. long. The pearly color worked well for my olive undertones. I use two methods for application. The first is just my hands — I'll warm the product up on the back of my hand, then apply using my fingers to the high points of my cheeks and nose. The second — If I want a more precise application, I'll pick up the product with a brush and apply it to the inner corner of my eyes and brow bone. This product makes it easy to make lines of any size. Very easy to control! The only con is I wish that the product lasted longer." —SophiePrice: $24 (available in eight shades) Clinique's Pop Lip + Cheek Oil in Black Honey so you can take the brand's iconic Black Honey hue to your cheeks, too! These eye pigments are a testament to this — they're super easy to blend with your finger or a brush, offer high pigment in a single swipe, and come in an array of colors to help you experiment with your newfound makeup hobby. Promising review: "I just have to brag about this product. I have always applied eyeshadow by starting with concealer as a base, setting with powder, then eyeshadow. I broke my dominant arm a while back, and blending became very difficult for me. I had never used liquid shadow before because I assumed it would be difficult to work with — messy, sticky, tacky, etc. This product gave me the ability to do eyeshadow again while I had very limited mobility. I swear, you barely have to manipulate it for it to blend seamlessly. Anyone with any skill level can make this product blend into the skin flawlessly. It doesn't dry too quickly, but once it does, it is totally dry and doesn't leave tackiness. While I was struggling badly with my limited mobility, this product allowed me to do my makeup again and feel like myself with very little effort, which was all I could give at the time. I am so grateful I had this product during one of the hardest times of my life. I was very dependent on others for almost every other thing I had to do, but with this product, doing my makeup was something I was capable of, and it made my healing journey more bearable." —carleycPrice: $16 (available in 31 colors) Tarte's Shape Tape Concealer that I opt for when I don't want to wear foundation, but I still want to mask my genetic dark circles. This high-coverage concealer covers all types of breakouts and uneven tones while melting into the skin! It's great if you're into a full makeup look that doesn't feel cakey. Urban Decay's Eyeshadow Primer, because you worked hard to perfect your eye look, darn it, and you WON'T let sweat or oily lids ruin your work. This primer clings to all types of shadows to keep your lid, crease, and brow bone colors in check all day long. Promising review: "I have tried other eye shadow primers and always prefer this one. Something about this magical potion allows your eyeshadow to never quit, give up, or move out on you! I love the Original, it's like magic because you only need to apply a little bit and it invisibly holds your eyeshadow in place. What's creasing? I have not experienced creasing in YEARS ever since I've used this product. In fact, I've experienced my eye looks to be totally intact for 24+ hours when I've had a big night and 'forgot' to remove my makeup. I always use this magic and am amazed by how long this product lasts. I am not sure when I'm going to run out..." —Ulta CustomerPrice: $28 E.l.f.'s Halo Glow Liquid Filter that's all the rage on TikTok as an affordable illuminating skin tint that's just as good as the expensive stuff. This has a light-medium coverage, making it a great base for your no-makeup makeup look. Promising review: "This was exactly what I wanted! I get compliments about how my face is so 'glass-like', it's perfect for my skin and smooths out my face amazingly! Price is perfect for it and it goes a long way. :)" —RyPrice: $14 (available in 12 shades) Sacheu's Peel Off Lip Liner stain so your lip liner can last! Much like a peel-off lip stain, this liner stains the perimeter of your lips to create a line that stays PUT until the end of your day. Promising review: "Love this lip liner! I mainly use it as a liner rather than on my whole lip because I think it looks prettier that way. It doesn't take long to dry, and peeling off is quite fun. I love the shade MUAH-ve, I'm like light-medium toned and it's a beautiful dark pink/brown shade." —RachelPrice: $12 (available in seven shades) E.l.f.'s Lash Xtndr Tubing Mascara that builds little tubes of mascara around your individual lash hairs for a wispy, legnthy look! This formula is water-resistant, meaning it won't run in the event of happy tears or rain. However! Unlike waterproof mascara (yes, there's a difference between water-resistant and waterproof!), this removes super easily at the end of the day. BeautyBlender's OG makeup sponge, because it's been hailed as the creme de la creme from most makeup artists. It's great for creating a diffused effect for foundation, cream bronzer, blush, and highlight! Promising review: "Love it. I don't often buy name-brand 'hyped' products, but this is the one makeup applicator I am willing to splurge on. I use this to apply concealer so a soften bendable tool is essential in the sensitive area around my eyes. I've tried other brands more affordable options but keep coming back to this blender. It's easy to wash and lasts a long time. I am a loyal user and will repurchase again and again!" —oily goilyPrice: $20 E.l.f.'s Perfect Finish HD Powder, aka everything you need if you want to up the ante on your matte complexion while decreasing the amount of reapplications you do throughout the day. Promising review: "I've had this powder since high school, and it's one of my favorite E.l.f. products. I have very VERY oily skin, and this powder mattifies my skin like no other. It's perfectly translucent, so I can use it with any foundation or even on top of sunscreen. 10/10 chef's kiss." —elflover89Price: $6 Winky Lux's Flower Balm that has a pretty flush of color that blooms to your natural pH! I reach for this on days when I don't really have time to do makeup, but still want to add a touch of moisture and color to my lips. Nudestix's Nudefix Cream Concealer if you're looking for a concealer that also nourishes your skin. This concealer has a buildable coverage, creamy formula, and applies super smoothly. Plus! It's packed with K-Beauty fave skincare ingredients like sweet berry to help minimize redness and hyaluronic acid to help boost moisture levels! Promising review: "This is ITTTTT when you're looking for undereye circle coverage. It's smooth and lightweight but it covers the eye baggage! I hate when concealers feel thick, like an extra layer that can easily be moved around the eye area. This sets well and truly covers the intense dark circles I get all of the time!" —GoosePrice: $29 (available in 12 shades) Erborian's CC Red Correct SPF 25, since sometimes you don't *actually* need a full-coverage foundation — a color-correcting CC cream can be enough to even outyour skin. This has a green base to help balance out redness caused my rosacea, scars, and even sunburns, all while protecting the skin from UV rays with SPF! Benefit Cosmetics' Silky Soft Powder Blush, because whether you're a makeup novice or a full-on pro, you need this iconic blush in your beauty arsenal. This powder blush adds a flush of color almost instantly and comes in a whopping 12 shades that work with most undertones! Promising review: "This product is the best blush I've ever used (and at my age I've used many!!). It isn't pink or peach hued, but a warm color in between, so it looks good with everything I wear." —CindyPrice: $33 (available in 12 shades)

Ilia And Gustaf Westman Collaborate: A Bold Fusion Of Makeup, Design, And Art

Westman's pieces inspired by Ilia makeup It's fair to say that both Ilia and designer Gustaf Westman are having a moment. While Ilia's makeup and beauty products are currently on fire, Gustaf Westman isn't a household name just yet. However, his 'curvy mirror' (along with the seemingly endless number of dupes) was one of the hottest looks on TikTok in the past year. So what better combination to collaborate than Ilia and Westman? Cafe Telegrama was transformed During Frieze LA, the duo took over Café Telegrama in Melrose Hill to combine design and makeup in a unique and innovative way. This colorful pop-up featured several one-of-a-kind pieces to celebrate Ilia's Eye Stylus launch, which are eye shadow sticks inspired by classical art. The result was way more than coffee and conversation pieces—it was the perfect pairing, according to Westman. 'Makeup is about expressing yourself, and that's basically what I do when I design my objects!' Ilia Eye Stylus The brand's latest launch is one of its most vibrant yet. Featuring a variety of both shimmer and matte hues, these glide on for a natural, easy-to-blend look. The sticks are shadows, liners and even work as a highlighter in a pinch. Sasha Plavsic, Ilia's founder, tells me, 'When we began to develop Eye Stylus, we were inspired by the luminous colors of Renaissance art. When you walk by a Renaissance oil painting, the light catches the color, texture, and sheen, making it very dimensional—almost 3D-looking.' Gustaf Westman With that inspiration in mind, they wanted to work with Westman. 'Art and architecture have always been a crucial strand of Ilia's DNA. Working with an architect-turned-designer like Gustaf Westman, who could tell the story of color and texture with us, was so natural,' she explains. 'Bringing his incredible work, characterized by vibrant shades and bold shapes, to our pop-up café in Los Angeles, we transformed the space into an immersive experience that reflected the Eye Stylus's blend of creativity and functionality.' So when the brand approached the designer, he was incredibly excited about all of the possibilities. 'I felt drawn to both the concept and the creative freedom it offered. Saying yes felt effortless.' Shapes and colors inside Cafe Telegrama After all, while art, design, and makeup revolve around beauty, this approach was a true melding of inspiration. 'The entire collaboration felt like a wholly unique opportunity to bring this modern makeup innovation to life and echo the foundational vision of Ilia—to create products that beautify and embody the creativity and care we value deeply. The Eye Stylus stands as a testament to this journey, offering performance, ease of use, and a celebration of art and beauty,' says Plavsic. Coffee but make it art The pop-up featured a variety of pieces designed by Westman, including vibrantly colored vanities, curved chairs, and round tables with tiny tops designed to hold a cup of coffee. Westman tells me, 'The inspiration stemmed from Ilia's vision, which centered around themes of the Renaissance and flow. I wanted to design a vanity that embodied continuous movement throughout its entire structure.' A custom vanity While the pieces from the event are not currently for sale, Westman's Flower Mirror Micro and Chunky Plates, which are available, are an easy way to get the look—especially when paired all of Ilia's products.
