Head coach reviews Pakistan Shaheens' England tour plan

LAHORE: With the Pakistan national team due to tour England in the near future, it was essential for us to identify players who could adapt quickly and perform in these conditions. This was stated by Imran Farhat, head coach Pakistan Shaheens, which undertook 15-day tour of England that comprised of white and red-ball series. During the tour, Shaheens featured in a three-match one-day series and two three-day fixtures. Pakistan Shaheens won the one-day series 2-1, played against the Professional County Club Select XI while both the three-day match ended in a draw. Led by Saud Shakeel, Shaheens saw Azan Awais emerge as the top run-scorer in the one-day series, amassing 164 runs from three matches, including two half-centuries. In the bowling department, Ubaid Shah was the leading wicket-taker, claiming six wickets across three matches, including figures of four for 41 in the third one-dayer. Imran Farhat said, 'We have identified a strong group of youngsters who we believe are part of our future. Our bowling in the one-day series was good; every bowler delivered strong results and our fielding was spot on. We also made sure everyone got a chance to play in the series, we followed a process and kept a consistent rotation policy in place.' He said, 'Looking at the red-ball matches, we saw some great performances from the players. The areas we were looking to improve in the top order were addressed quite effectively. Going forward, these players will continue to gain experience in first-class cricket and hopefully establish themselves further.' Imran said, 'We have discovered several promising players, both in red-ball and white-ball formats, which is a very positive takeaway. Each player will now return with an individual development plan that focuses on areas they need to improve in, be it technical, tactical or professional aspects, to become fully prepared for international cricket.' He said, 'Our focus throughout has been on building a strong bench. These young players, through their performances, have shown they are capable. We also assessed how well they adapted to the English conditions.' Copyright Business Recorder, 2025

Pak Shaheens depart for Eng tour today

Pakistan Shaheens' head coach Imran Farhat has termed the upcoming England tour a significant step toward building a strong future for Pakistan cricket. Addressing the media at National Stadium on Tuesday, Farhat highlighted that the tour blends emerging young players with experienced seniors — a combination he believes will yield long-term benefits. The 18-member Pakistan Shaheens squad is set to depart for England on Wednesday, where they will play two three-day matches and three 50-over games. The primary aim, Farhat emphasized, is to develop high-quality backups for the national team by exposing promising domestic performers to international conditions. "This tour is a golden opportunity to groom future stars," Farhat said. "Our focus is on strengthening the top order and identifying standout talent in spin and pace bowling. We'll also work on helping players adjust to English conditions." Farhat further revealed that similar international exposure is being planned in countries like Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand. Speaking at the media briefing, several Shaheens squad members — Ali Zaryab, Aazan Owais, Shamyl Hussain, and Ubaid Shah — also shared their excitement and aspirations. Photo: PCB The second phase of the Skills Development camp, featuring 15 players, concluded here at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) on Saturday, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed. According to the cricket board, the players, under the supervision of coaches, participated in several fitness and fielding sessions from 6 am to 8 am, while skill-based sessions — net practice — were held from 2:30 pm to 6:30 pm at the Lahore City Cricket Association (LCCA) Ground and NCA from Monday to Thursday. They also engaged in match scenarios at the LCCA Ground on the final two days of the second phase of the Skills Development camp. Notably, a total of 47 players had been shortlisted to participate in the camp in three groups from June 16 to July 5 and following the conclusion of the second phase earlier today, the PCB has also announced the names of 17 players, set to partake in the third phase from June 30 to July 4. Third batch of Pakistan players called up for Skills Development camp: Ali Zaryab, Azan Awais, Faisal Akram, Fawad Ali, Mohammad Naeem, Mohammad Salman Mirza, Mohammad Suleman, Muhammad Ghazi Ghori, Musa Khan, Omair Bin Yousaf, Rohail Nazir, Sajid Khan, Salman Ali Agha, Shamyl Hussain, Ubaid Shah, Usman Khan and Waqar Ahmed. Notably, Director High-Performance Aqib Javed, in a statement released by the PCB, had shared that the players were invited to the camp after 'detailed discussions' with newly-appointed white-ball head coach Mike Hesson. Javed said that the camp would provide the 47 players with an opportunity to fine-tune their skills during a brief pause from competitive cricket. Shafique makes Yorkshire debut Pakistan's rising star Abdullah Shafique is all set to make his long-awaited Yorkshire debut on Sunday in a crucial County Championship Division One encounter against Essex at Clifton Park - Yorkshire's first red-ball fixture at the venue since 2019. The match, Yorkshire's first red-ball outing at Clifton Park since 2019, could be pivotal in their fight to stay in Division One. Currently sitting ninth in the table - one place below Essex - Yorkshire trail their visitors by 14 points. Shafique, who was originally expected to play two Championship matches, will now feature in just this one due to visa-related delays. However, he is still in line to participate in the county's remaining four Vitality Blast North Group matches, providing reinforcement in both red and white-ball formats. Head coach Anthony McGrath admitted that Shafique's arrival came at a vital time, especially given Yorkshire's batting struggles this season. "Our batting has been light, particularly in the middle order. Bringing in someone of Abdullah's international pedigree gives us depth and experience," said McGrath. Alongside Shafique, Australia's Will Sutherland will bolster the squad, stepping in for New Zealand pacer Will O'Rourke, who featured in just one game — a draw against Nottinghamshire. Meanwhile, Essex arrive with a formidable lineup featuring South African veterans Dean Elgar and Simon Harmer, though only Harmer is officially registered as an overseas player. Michael Pepper, Essex's top scorer this season with 531 runs in eight matches, is in red-hot form after a match-saving 140 against Hampshire. On the bowling front, Jamie Porter leads the charge with 30 wickets to his name. This weekend's contest will be only the second County Championship match ever played at Clifton Park, the last being a nail-biting three-wicket win for Warwickshire in 2019. The two sides last faced off in May at Chelmsford, where Yorkshire dominated for large parts but Essex narrowly escaped with a draw, finishing 273/9 in a steep chase of 520. As Yorkshire return to the familiar grounds of York — also home to in-form opener Finlay Bean, who recently notched a career-best 224 — all eyes will be on whether Abdullah Shafique's inclusion can spark a much-needed turnaround.
