Istanbul district mayor arrested on corruption charges

Also in Turkey Ankara-PKK talks a chance to avoid past mistakes: DEM Party Magnitude 6.1 earthquake hits northwestern Turkey, no fatalities reported Ankara-PKK peace process to finish by end of 2025: Bahceli Turkey says tightening measures to battle forest fires A+ A- ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The mayor of Istanbul's Beyoglu district, Inan Guney, was arrested on Friday along with more than 40 others as part of an investigation into corruption in opposition-held municipalities. 'Let the hearts of my neighbors in Beyoglu, my family, and my party members be at ease. I have not engaged in any action that would embarrass anyone, nor will I. When my location and residence are known, being taken into custody from my home at six in the morning amid the tears of my three daughters clearly shows that the real purpose is political pressure,' Guney wrote in a post on Instagram. Guney is from the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP), whose elected officials have faced a series of arrests this year, beginning with Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu in March. He and 44 others were detained on charges of leading a criminal organization, extortion, bribery, aggravated fraud, unlawful acquisition of personal data, and tender rigging, state-run Anadolu Agency reported. CHP said the arrests were politically motivated. 'This operation is a revenge operation undertaken to cover up the damage suffered by the judicial gang and the AK Party,' party leader Ozgur Ozel said in a statement, referring to the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP). In July, state media reported that Turkish authorities detained three mayors in a corruption probe. All were members of CHP. Many elected Kurdish officials have also been arrested in recent years.

Türkiye detains Istanbul district mayor in corruption probe, says state media

Turkish police detained 40 people including the mayor of Istanbul's central Beyoglu district as part of a corruption investigation, state broadcaster TRT Haber said on Friday, the latest wave in a crackdown on the opposition. Beyoglu mayor Inan Guney from the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) was the 16th mayor to have been taken into custody in the crackdown, in which more than 500 people have been detained in less than a year. Among those in prison is Istanbul mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, President Tayyip Erdogan's main political rival, who is being investigated on charges of corruption and links to terrorism. The CHP denies the charges and calls them an attempt to eliminate a democratic alternative, a charge the government rejects. TRT Haber said those held in the latest operation are suspected of involvement in fraudulent activities at companies linked to the Istanbul municipality. Arrest warrants were issued for 44 people, including the 40 detained, it said. On Thursday, CHP mayor Ozlem Cercioglu from the western city of Aydin joined Erdogan's governing AK Party, citing disagreements with the CHP administration. CHP leader Ozgur Ozel told reporters, without providing evidence, that AK Party officials had threatened Cercioglu with legal investigations into her municipality and arrest unless she joined the party. AK Party deputy chair Hayati Yazici called Ozel's allegation 'completely untrue'. Cercioglu also rejected the claim.

Turkey detains 40 in corruption probe

BY Libyan Express Aug 15, 2025 - 12:01 Beyoglu Mayor Inan Guney was the 16th mayor to have been taken into custody in the crackdown Turkish authorities have detained 40 people, including the mayor of Istanbul's central Beyoğlu district, as part of an ongoing corruption investigation, state broadcaster TRT Haber reported on Friday. Beyoğlu Mayor İnan Güney, from the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP), is the 16th opposition mayor taken into custody in the past year. According to official figures, more than 500 people have been detained over the same period in similar operations. Among those already in prison is Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, the most prominent opposition figure and a key political rival to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. İmamoğlu is facing charges of corruption and alleged links to terrorism, which he and the CHP strongly deny. Government officials reject claims that the investigations are politically motivated. TRT Haber said the latest detentions are linked to allegations of fraudulent activity involving companies connected to the Istanbul municipality. Arrest warrants were issued for 44 people in total. The development came a day after CHP mayor Özlem Çerçioğlu, from the western city of Aydın, announced she was joining the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), citing disagreements with her party's leadership. CHP chair Özgür Özel alleged — without providing evidence — that Çerçioğlu was pressured with the threat of legal investigations unless she switched parties. Both Çerçioğlu and AKP deputy chair Hayati Yazıcı denied the allegation. The case adds to the political backdrop ahead of Turkey's next electoral cycle, with opposition-led municipalities — particularly in major cities — playing an increasingly significant role in national politics. Turkish authorities detain Istanbul district mayor in sweeping crackdown on opposition

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Turkish authorities detained the mayor of a key Istanbul district along with some 40 other officials on Friday, intensifying a sweeping crackdown on the country's opposition. Inan Guney, mayor of Istanbul's Beyoglu district, was taken into custody as part of an investigation into alleged corruption, the state-run Anadolu Agency reported. Guney's bodyguard, his advisor and other aides were among those detained, the Birgun newspaper and other media reported. Beyoglu district is held by the main opposition Republican People's Party, or CHP. Municipalities controlled by the CHP have faced waves of arrests this year, beginning with the targeting of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoglu in March. A popular opposition figure, Imamoglu is widely regarded as the main challenger to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's two-decade rule and is the CHP's candidate for a presidential election due in 2028. Critics argue the legal actions are politically motivated, aimed at undermining the CHP's growing influence. Erdogan's government insists the courts operate independently without political interference. Istanbul and a string of major cities fell to the CHP in 2019, with the opposition further extending its control in last year's municipal elections.
