Unduk Ngadau contestants encouraged to promote Sabah tourism
Joniston with the top seven winners of the short film competition at the Majlis Anugerah Filem Pendek Culture, Adventure and Nature (C.A.N) held at Imago Shopping Mall, on Tuesday. KOTA KINABALU (May 27): Unduk Ngadau contestants should go beyond beauty and tradition by becoming active ambassadors of Sabah tourism, said Assistant Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Joniston Bangkuai. He said the contestants have the potential to become influential content creators who can reach both local and international audiences. Joniston was speaking when officiating the Majlis Anugerah Filem Pendek Culture, Adventure and Nature (C.A.N) on Tuesday, held in conjunction with the state-level Unduk Ngadau competition. He said the C.A.N short film initiative gives added value to the Unduk Ngadau pageant by encouraging participants to engage in storytelling that reflects real issues and community experiences. 'It is befitting for Unduk Ngadau contestants to promote the concept of Culture, Adventure and Nature because they represent the diversity of Sabah's people and places. 'Through their stories, they can highlight agro-tourism, local heritage and rural life in a way that connects with local and foreign audiences,' he said. Joniston added that contestants today are not just public figures during Kaamatan but also digital natives who can create impactful content on social media. Each contestant was required to produce a short film under the C.A.N category, themed 'Kaamatan Untuk Semua,' with a special focus on redefining water and energy, particularly in relation to community and agriculture. Joniston praised the creativity and commitment shown by the Unduk Ngadau contestants, noting that their films offered a meaningful glimpse into the unique character and tourism appeal of their respective districts. 'Efforts like the C.A.N. competition are important in encouraging young people to take part in promoting Sabah's identity and tourism through their own lens,' he said. The top three winners of the C.A.N. short film competition were Unduk Ngadau Jenylin Janis representing Ranau in first place, followed by Putrajaya's Emelka Ryner in second, and Ivy Davina David representing Inanam in third.

Apply for permit if using over 42kg of LPG, Armizan tells food outlets
Domestic trade and cost of living minister Armizan Mohd Ali said LPG subsidies amounted to RM3.4 billion last year and they are meant for public use, not large-scale business or commercial use. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The domestic trade and cost of living ministry has denied an allegation that the government has abolished gas cylinder subsidies for food outlets using more than 42kg of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). Clarifying the matter, minister Armizan Mohd Ali said premises wishing to use more than 42kg of LPG need to apply for a controlled goods permit under the Control of Supplies (Amendment) Act 2021. Armizan said those who do not store or use LPG beyond this specified limit are not required to obtain the permit. 'Remember that the LPG subsidies amounted to RM3.4 billion last year. These subsidies are meant for public use, not business or commercial. 'I don't think many eateries, let alone food stalls or burger stands, need to store or use LPG cylinders exceeding 42kg at any one time unless they are large-scale business premises,' Bernama quoted him as saying in Inanam, Sabah, today. 'If there are specific cases where businesses require more than 42kg of LPG, please notify me. 'We can verify whether these business premises sell items and services directly to the people at reasonable prices, and if the cost of living is used to justify getting subsidies for their business operations.' Armizan said allegations of subsidies being withdrawn only confuse the public, noting that the need for permits for large quantities of LPG was not a new policy or regulation under the unity government. It had been in effect since 2021 under the previous administration. 'They are playing on the sentiments that costs are being passed on to the public, but the LPG subsidies come from public funds, including taxpayers' money. 'It is preposterous for the public to bear all business costs, including those of large-scale enterprises,' he said.

Sabah PKR open to collaboration if visions align, says Peto
KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) is open to working with the existing government. Its deputy chairman Datuk Peto Galim said the party shared similar aspirations to move Sabah forward. "Our collaboration concept is very clear. We want leaders who can bring drastic changes to the problems faced by the people. "If our team shares the same vision, the likelihood of working together is higher," said Peto, who is also the Sabah PKR election director. He urged more efforts to be made towards rectifying infrastructure issues. Peto, who is also the Inanam assemblyman, was speaking to the media during a Raya celebration at the Tun Ahmad Shah Mosque here. Commenting on Sabah Barisan Nasional chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin's statement about working with Sabah PH, Peto said there had been no meetings after Bung made the announcement about two weeks ago. On April 14, BN president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said that meetings had been held between BN and PH, as well as with various political coalitions in Sabah. However, he also said an official announcement would only be made once all party leaders could reach a consensus. "To be clear, I was never called or informed about it. "The cooperation is their opinion and interest in working with us," Peto said. As for seat negotiations, he said discussions had been completed after being put on hold due to the party election and Raya celebration. "Our reference for the discussion is simple, wherever you are strong, you will contest there." In the 2020 state election, Sabah PKR won the Inanam and Api-Api seats. Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Christina Liew won the Api-Api seat.
