Sabah PKR open to collaboration if visions align, says Peto

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) is open to working with the existing government.
Its deputy chairman Datuk Peto Galim said the party shared similar aspirations to move Sabah forward.
"Our collaboration concept is very clear. We want leaders who can bring drastic changes to the problems faced by the people.
"If our team shares the same vision, the likelihood of working together is higher," said Peto, who is also the Sabah PKR election director.
He urged more efforts to be made towards rectifying infrastructure issues.
Peto, who is also the Inanam assemblyman, was speaking to the media during a Raya celebration at the Tun Ahmad Shah Mosque here.
Commenting on Sabah Barisan Nasional chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin's statement about working with Sabah PH, Peto said there had been no meetings after Bung made the announcement about two weeks ago.
On April 14, BN president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said that meetings had been held between BN and PH, as well as with various political coalitions in Sabah.
However, he also said an official announcement would only be made once all party leaders could reach a consensus.
"To be clear, I was never called or informed about it.
"The cooperation is their opinion and interest in working with us," Peto said.
As for seat negotiations, he said discussions had been completed after being put on hold due to the party election and Raya celebration.
"Our reference for the discussion is simple, wherever you are strong, you will contest there."
In the 2020 state election, Sabah PKR won the Inanam and Api-Api seats.
Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Christina Liew won the Api-Api seat.

Sabah PKR urges calm amid GRS criticism, fair seat negotiations

Published on: Tuesday, August 19, 2025 Published on: Tue, Aug 19, 2025 Text Size: Ahmad also reminded GRS of the federal government's and Sabah PH's crucial role in maintaining political stability during the 'Langkah Kinabalu' episode, which threatened to topple the Sabah government. Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) has called for a calm and mature response following recent criticism from Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) leaders over media coverage of political statements. Sabah PKR Information Chief Ahmad Farid Sainuri said the party welcomes constructive criticism from GRS leadership, particularly regarding a 'Malaysiakini' report that quoted a statement by Sabah PKR State Leadership Council (MPN) Chairman Datuk Mustapha Sakmud. Advertisement 'The statement by Datuk Mustapha was actually a response to remarks made by Sabah Umno Information Chief Datuk Suhaimi on Aug 14. It was not meant to portray GRS as a liability in any political cooperation,' said Ahmad in a statement on Monday. He reaffirmed Sabah PKR's commitment to upholding political stability both at the federal and state levels in the interest of the people. 'The cooperation between Pakatan Harapan (PH) and GRS must be protected—not seen as a challenge to the Prime Minister,' he said. Ahmad also reminded GRS of the federal government's and Sabah PH's crucial role in maintaining political stability during the 'Langkah Kinabalu' episode, which threatened to topple the Sabah government. 'Sabah PKR respects the leadership of the Chief Minister and values the strong GRS-PH cooperation. But we urge GRS not to misinterpret our statements due to media reports that sometimes fail to reflect our true intentions,' he said. Ahmad further stressed the need to finalise seat negotiations for the upcoming state election with fairness and a strategic approach. He emphasised that discussions must involve the leadership of Sabah PH, not just component party leaders. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? 'BN rural, PH urban' formula not foolproof, says analyst

KUALA LUMPUR:The electoral formula that Barisan Nasional (BN) should concentrate on rural seats while Pakatan Harapan (PH) focuses on urban areas may sound practical, but it is not a foolproof strategy for the Sabah state election. Universiti Malaya socio-political analyst Datuk Professor Dr Awang Azman Awang Pawi said while BN's deep-rooted grassroots networks and PH's stronger traction among urban, younger and middle-class voters made the division of focus appear realistic, Sabah's voting patterns were far more fluid compared to Peninsular Malaysia. "Fundamentally, this division of focus appears realistic because it takes into account Sabah's demographic reality. "However, voters can easily shift support based on current issues, candidate personalities, and local sentiments. "Thus, the formula is not foolproof," he said when contacted. He added that the BN–PH strategy carries both the potential to complement each other and the risk of creating friction, depending on how it is managed. "If BN focuses on rural seats and PH on urban ones, both sides can avoid clashing and work together more effectively against Warisan and Perikatan Nasional (PN). "But this only works if there is a clear seat-sharing deal and strong candidates. "Problems may also arise in semi-urban or mixed seats, where support overlaps. Umno's rejection of Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) could also put PH in a difficult position, forcing it to choose between siding more with BN or with GRS," he said. On Sunday, Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan announced that BN is expected to dominate rural seats while PH will take charge of urban constituencies under a seat-sharing agreement finalised for the upcoming Sabah state election. Previously, BN chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the coalition's pact with PH for the upcoming Sabah election was final, but that they remained open to cooperation with other Sabah-based parties or coalitions. Zahid also said that while the cooperation between PH and GRS was a mutual agreement between the two coalitions, the partnership between BN and PH was now officially confirmed. Commenting further, Awang Azman said BN's refusal to work with GRS may strengthen PH's position as the balancing force, but it could also weaken the unity government if not managed carefully. He added that the refusal could indirectly strengthen GRS's reliance on PH, positioning the coalition as the "bridge" to ensure state–federal stability. "However, this may also open BN to accuse PH of betraying its interests, which could strain relations within the unity government.

Anwar: Meeting with BN and GRS leaders a step towards political stability

PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Anwar Ibrahim said the meeting with Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) president Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor was held in a harmonious manner. 'This meeting reflects political maturity and a commitment to strengthening cooperation for the sake of national stability, discussing the relations between the Federal Government and the Sabah State Government,' he added in a social media post on Monday (Aug 18). 'I believe political stability is the foundation for progressing the development agenda and the welfare of the people. Anwar said that close collaboration between state and federal leaders is vital in ensuring that people's aspirations are realised holistically and in an inclusive manner. 'I hope that this spirit of consensus will continue to be the foundation for a stronger national unity, and that the future of Malaysia becomes a progressive, fair and prosperous future for all,' At the Dewan Rakyat on Monday, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said that 13 out of the 29 demands under the MA63 have been resolved, and nine of the 13 were finalised during the Madani administration, while four were carried out through previous administrations. 'This includes education, health, petroleum and oil royalties,' said the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry.
