Mustapha to continue leading Sabah PKR
KOTA KINABALU: Datuk Mustapha Sakmud will continue his role as Sabah PKR chairman, as the party gears up for the 17th Sabah Election. This was confirmed during the first meeting of the central political bureau for the 2025-2028 term, chaired by PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The meeting decided that Mustapha would continue until a new state party leadership council is appointed to ensure continuity and experienced leadership as the party prepares for the upcoming state polls. In the same meeting, Datuk Peto Galim was also retained as the party's state election committee director. Part of its plans include PKR mobilising its national leadership to play key roles on the ground. "The decision reflects the party's confidence in Mustapha's leadership and strategic insight as we approach the state polls. Our preparations are well underway, with key roles and responsibilities clearly defined," PKR said in a statement on Thursday (May 29). Meanwhile, Fuziah Salleh and William Leong will continue serving as secretary-general and treasurer-general respectively until new appointments are made during the upcoming central leadership council (MPP) meeting.

Anwar meets Sabah PKR leaders amid political shifts
KOTA KINABALU: Pakatan Harapan chairman and PKR President Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is set to meet with Sabah PKR leaders on Thursday (May 29) night. The meeting is expected to discuss the party's preparation for the upcoming 17th state election and the inclusion of state leaders in the Central Leadership Council (CLC). Sabah PKR leaders did not secure positions in the CLC during the recent party election and hope for appointments as vice presidents or supreme council members. The meeting occurs amid political turbulence in PKR, following the resignations of Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli and Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad. A party insider described the meeting as crucial to ensure Sabah PKR is not sidelined as election strategies are formulated. This meeting is part of Anwar's two-day working visit to the state. The Prime Minister and his wife, Datin Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, are also set to attend the state-level Kaamatan Festival celebration at the Hongkod Koisaan in Penampang on Friday (May 30). He is expected to launch Phase One of the Esteel Enterprise Sabah Sdn Bhd project at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC). Rafizi and Nik Nazmi announced their resignations on Wednesday (May 28), just days after failing to retain top posts in the recent PKR party elections. Anwar has confirmed he approved their leave applications but has not commented further on their decisions to step down.

Sabah polls: PKR's 13-seat target not arbitrary but based on feedback from state chapter, says youth leader
KOTA KINABALU: Newly-elected PKR deputy president Nurul Izzah Anwar's statement that the party is eyeing 13 seats in the upcoming Sabah election was not a unilateral decision by the central leadership, says one of its youth leaders. Mohd Guntur Sangkah said the figure was based on discussions involving Sabah PKR and potential election partners Barisan Nasional and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS). "(The statement) was shaped based on a spirit of mature political cooperation, without sidelining the role of local parties," said Guntur, Sabah PKR's Pensiangan division youth leader and a member of the central youth committee. ALSO READ: Challenges ahead for PKR, says Nurul Izzah He was responding Tuesday (May 27) to a recent statement by Sabah STAR's information chief Anuar Ghani that federal parties in Pakatan and Barisan were undermining state rights by putting pressure on GRS to work with them. "Sabah PKR is not merely a 'branch' that blindly follows central directives. "Since its inception, Sabah PKR has been built through close collaboration between local leaders and national leadership, making it a truly rooted national party in Sabah," Guntur said in a statement. ALSO READ: Anwar assures PKR of fair seat allocation in Sabah election Guntur said PKR is the only national party to enshrine the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) in its party constitution, a clear commitment to the rights and autonomy of Sabah. "Sabah STAR, on the other hand, should reflect on its own record before labelling others as political outsiders,' he said. ALSO READ: Sabah DAP aims to contest 10 seats at state polls He said Sabah STAR had once aligned itself with Perikatan Nasional, a coalition that openly weakened Sabah's position in MA63 negotiations and failed to deliver on many development promises. "The reality is, Sabah PKR has remained consistent in its fight for reform and justice for the people of Sabah, while STAR continues to shift its stance according to political convenience. "What Sabah needs is stability and principle, not opportunism," Guntur said.

Mustapha Sakmud. Sabah PKR leadership council chairman Mustapha Sakmud said the state election would be a timely opportunity to reunite members following the party polls that brought a wave of emotions and challenges for candidates, delegates and members.
