After PKR polls, full focus now on Sabah state election

KOTA KINABALU : With the conclusion of the party's central leadership polls last Friday, Sabah PKR is shifting its full focus to the upcoming state election, which is expected to be held soon.

Sabah PKR leadership council chairman Mustapha Sakmud said the state election would be a timely opportunity to reunite members following the party polls that brought a wave of emotions and challenges for candidates, delegates and members.
The Sepanggar MP said the state election would also serve as a true test of the party's organisational strength, political maturity, and unity as a team.
Mustapha, who is also the deputy higher education minister, said the people of Sabah are less concerned about who holds positions, and more about who can genuinely address their everyday needs.
'Party members must no longer be caught in post-election division. Instead, we need a united front, focussed on our shared responsibilities,' he said in a statement today.
He expressed confidence that PKR will continue to be a party that values the experience and loyalty of long-serving members, while also welcoming fresh voices and new energy willing to contribute.
'I believe the party's strength lies not in who holds office, but in the spirit of our struggle, and the conviction that politics must be cleaned up, humanised, and guided by strong values,' he said.

KUALA LUMPUR, June 5 — Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has reportedly announced the formation of an informal Malay committee, describing it as a 'big umbrella' to unify the Malay community. According to a report in Malaysiakini, Mahathir met with other political leaders in Putrajaya — including PN chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, Bersatu deputy president Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin, and PAS deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man — before making the announcement. 'They (Malays) need fighters to champion their cause. Right now, they don't have a dedicated fighter,' he was quoted as saying 'We're not concerned with other problems, we just want to focus on one struggle — the struggle to save the Malays,' he reportedly added. According to the report, Mahathir said that the Malays' problems could only be solved if Malays once again led the government. He reportedly added that the movement was open to all Malays, including Umno members, provided they supported the same cause.

Avoid political slogans in govt projects, academic says

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : An academic has advised against naming government projects after the slogans adopted by individual administrations, following plans for the construction of a 'Madani City' in Putrajaya. Zairul Noor of Universiti Putra Malaysia said the names of government projects or policies should be 'timeless' and not tied to any particular administration to ensure their acceptance. He said this approach would also help prevent wastage in terms of rebranding in the event of a change in government. He added that doing away with names tied to political slogans would ensure the continuity of the policies in question. He gave the example of the 1Malaysia brand which was synonymous with the administration of former prime minister Najib Razak. 'Billboards, official documents, and visual elements (which had the 1Malaysia logo) had to be replaced, and it cost a lot to do so. It was a waste of public funds,' Zairul, a lecturer in architecture, told FMT. 'For a country that is encouraging fiscal prudence, the tendency to incorporate politics in branding should be avoided.' In 2023, it was reported that the administration of Ismail Sabri Yaakob, the country's ninth prime minister, had spent a little over RM62 million on the rebranding of his 'Keluarga Malaysia' government. The 'Kerajaan Prihatin' government of Ismail's predecessor, Muhyiddin Yassin, spent RM181,752 on rebranding exercises, while Anwar Ibrahim's administration spent RM489,216 on the 'Malaysia Madani' rebranding programmes. Two days ago, the government announced its plans for a 41-hectare 'Madani City' in Putrajaya. However, Zairul said the term 'madani' was tied to the concept of 'madaniyah' which revolves around building a community based on values, knowledge, and fairness. 'If the term selected is not just a political slogan, it will be accepted as long as it also promotes inclusivity,' he said.
