The Eastern Area Complex Incident Management Team says the Camp House Fire near Brimson, which has burned more than 12,000 acres, is nearly 90% contained. Crews continue to search for any remaining hot spots and are working to contain the perimeter. The cause of the Camp House Fire is under investigation. The Jenkins Creek Fire is roughly 47% contained, and has damaged 16,781 acres, according to the incident management team. Investigators believe people started the fire. Crews are making "steady progress," the management team said, and helicopters are still supporting the fight with water drops. More than 30,000 acres have been scorched in the northland, and more than 150 buildings have been destroyed. A third fire in the area — the Munger Shaw Fire — has burned 1,259 acres and is 95% contained, according to the National Interagency Fire Center. WCCO On Thursday, residents of Skibo were permitted to return to their properties, and the Lake County sheriff announced all evacuations in the county had been lifted. Though the Twin Cities were doused with rain earlier this week, dry conditions persist in the Arrowhead. The National Weather Service says the area near the wildfires could see a high of 64 degrees with 25% humidity Friday, with winds between 5 and 7 mph. Iron Fire in New Mexico's Gila Wilderness now at 92 percent containment

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The Iron Fire, burning in the Gila Wilderness north of Silver City, is now at 92 percent containment and firefighters are expected to be off the fireline by Sunday night, fire officials said in an update issued on Sunday, May 11. The fire, burning 38 miles east of Glenwood, New Mexico, in the 2012 Whitewater Baldy burn scar, started on Sunday, May 4 and was caused by lightning, fire officials said. Wind quickly fanned the fire that first day and it was initially estimated to have reached 901 acres. Those size estimates have been downgraded as fire crews have been able to use GPS and walk-arounds to get a better idea of its scope during the past few days. Mop-up operations continue across the fire area. This effort involves extinguishing smoldering fuels, cooling hot spots, and mitigating hazards that could lead to re-ignition, fire officials said. 'With containment now at 92%, the Incident Management Team remains confident in the strength of established control lines and the work completed over the past week,' fire officials said. Helicopters are assisting with the removal of gear and supplies. Crews are being released from the fireline ahead of a forecasted 'wind event' for early this week with gusts expected to reach 45 mph, fire officials said. 'These conditions pose risks to aerial operations and ground crews due to the presence of hazard trees. To ensure the safety of all personnel, equipment and firefighters will be off the fireline by this (Sunday) evening,' fire officials said in their update. Road grading continues along Bursum Road to New Mexico Highway 12. Motorists are urged to use caution, slow down and turn on their headlights. A temporary flight restriction remains in effect over the fire area. Unauthorized drone use poses a 'serious risk' to aerial firefighting operations, fire officials said. Smoke throughout the fire area is minimal and is expected to remain low. There is potential during the wind event forecasted for Monday and Tuesday that smoke may become visible. This smoke will be within the interior of the fire as fuels such as heavy, downed logs continue to burn. WNF monitoring situation at Timbre Ridge Dam

Apr. 27—PEDRO — The Wayne National Forest has been monitoring Timbre Ridge Dam in Lawrence County this week, after recent heavy rainfall created a slump, or portion of earth that moves downslope, on the face of the dam. Currently, there are no impacts to public safety and wildlife. The Forest is monitoring the structure daily with a local Incident Management Team. For public safety, the Forest is drawing down the dam pool until the water level reaches the lowest point of the slump. Once this occurs, personnel will be able to assess the conditions and determine a path forward. The Forest aims to lower the water levels no more than 12 inches a day. Currently, water is being released at a rate of 2-3 inches per day. As part of the Timbre Ridge Dam Emergency Action Plan procedures, the Wayne National Forest has notified and is working with local elected officials and emergency response organizations about the issues of concern at the Timbre Ridge Lake Dam. The Forest is also coordinating with local emergency management agencies to ensure that community members remain aware and safe as the Incident Management Team makes all efforts to mitigate the situation. Should changes occur at the facility that elevate the levels of concern, Forest will inform and support local authorities so they can notify the public in a timely manner. The Forest will provide updates as they become available on its Facebook page at For further questions and concerns about the dam, contact Wayne National Forest Public Affairs at 740-823-0841. For questions about emergency notifications and procedures, contact Lawrence County Emergency Management at 740-533-4375.

Helene relief far from over as volunteers with Samaritan's Purse help people rebuild

BOONE, N.C. (WATE) — Samaritan's Purse continues working with Hurricane Helene survivors across western North Carolina and parts of Tennessee. The relief group's work is far from over. Samaritan's Purse has provided disaster relief across a broad expanse of the rugged mountains of Appalachia. Where flooding damaged or destroyed thousands of homes, the relief group hasn't stopped its outreach efforts to those in need. Luther Harrison, the vice president of North American Ministries for Samaritan's Purse, has been busy. He oversees the U.S. disaster relief efforts and rebuild program for the nonprofit evangelical relief group. Much of the coordination for Hurricane Helene is being handled by Incident Management Team members at headquarters in Boone, North Carolina. 'We saw it coming. It spooled up very quickly to a very intense storm,' said Harrison. Volunteers with Samaritan's Purse shovel mud out of couple's home after Helene However, the storm's widespread destructive damage shocked many of Samaritan's Purse's leadership team. They moved their volunteers into high gear quickly. 'When this storm stalled out over the mountains, and trillions of gallons of water came off the mountains, we've never seen damage in the mountains like this. I don't think anyone thought this storm would be as severe as it was,' Harrison said. 'We have been supporting the churches ever since Helene hit. Just during Hurricane Helene, we were right at 40,000 people who came and gave their time and talent, their sweat equity, to be the hands and feet of Jesus Christ.' Samaritan's Purse equipped volunteers giving them the tools and the leadership necessary to muck out a home like Christopher and Angela King's place where mud was nearly chest high. 'Angelic. It was a complete crew of angels as far as I'm concerned,' said Christopher. Sarah and Dennis Rutland from Niota, Tennessee have been volunteers for Samaritan's Purse since 2018. They spent several weeks assisting those affected by Helene. 'These are volunteers that will put on a Tyvek suit and just come alongside these folks carry the burden with them and share it to help get them back on their feet,' said Harrison. 'A heart to help': Niota couple brings relief to communities hit by Helene 'Our gratitude is endless. I don't know where we would be, honestly,' said Angela. Aaron Ashoff is the executive staff member overseeing the Helene incident management team. He said that people needed winter clothing and fuel for generators as the temperatures dropped. Samaritan's Purse provided it all. 'What we found is that there is still a lot of people that need housing. So, the big project of Samaritan's Purse is the rebuild of homes and mobile homes,' said Ashoff. 'We do a background check and credit check to make sure everything they tell us is truthful. Then we will go in and build them a brand new home free of charge, or replace their mobile home free of charge,' said Harrison. Samaritan's Purse presented Dumitru Gyska and his wife, Dina, the keys to a new work van last month. He'll use it to continue his plumbing business after his home and vehicles were lost outside of Asheville. 'We lost our home, our clothes, our everything': Family recovering from Helene with help from Samaritan's Purse 'We want to walk alongside these families through this deep valley they're going through. You know we don't force our religion on anyone, but we want them to see what Christ has done in our lives and share that with them,' said Harrison. Wanda Robinson doesn't know how she would have made it without the physical help and spiritual uplifting from volunteers who spent days cleaning out her flooded home in Swannanoa, North Carolina. Today, it's beyond repair. So, Samaritan's Purse is going to build a new one for her at a different location. 'Even though Samaritan's Purse is doing it, I know beyond any shadow of a doubt it is coming from God,' said Robinson. North Carolina woman accused of faking her own murder is arrested 'God is blessing us because we are being intentional about the Gospel. We are being intentional to go and follow the Great Commission. You can't share your faith without meeting physical needs,' said Harrison. Samaritan's Purse mobilizes staff and equipment, and enlists thousands of volunteers, to provide emergency aid to victims of natural disasters across the United States and the world. As we have seen this week, the relief group often stays behind after its initial response, to rebuild or restore houses for needy families in our region and those needs will likely continue well into this year and several years beyond.
