Frightening scenes as footballer plummets into giant ditch celebrating goal
A moment of jubilation quickly turned into a heart-stopping moment as Indonesian under-17 star Mierza Firjatullah plummeted into a pit while celebrating his goal against Tajikistan. In the Independence Cup match between the two under-17 international sides last week, Firjatullah scored a brilliant headed goal to give Indonesia a 1-0 lead in the 34th minute. Overcome with emotion after giving his team the lead, the young forward celebrated wildly, charging towards the home fans. However, there was one major problem, a deep pit that separated the spectators from the pitch at the North Sumatra Stadium in Deliserdang, Indonesia. After jumping over the advertising boards, Firjatullah found himself falling rapidly into a ditch more than 3m deep in front of Indonesian fans. You can watch the heart-stopping moment in the player above The players, coaches and stewards immediately ran towards the hole to check on the player as audible gasps replaced cheers. Fortuitously, Firjatullah managed to stick the landing and came out of the ordeal scot-free, eventually continuing to celebrate with spectators. He was helped out of the hole by staff and continued on until he was taken off in the 59th minute. The match ended in an anticlimactic 2-2 draw, but with a massive viral moment. 'Imagine if the goal was considered offside,' one fan commented. Another wrote: 'Lucky to walk away from that. You'd think they'd at least build a fence there'. While a third added: 'Lucky lucky boy'.

Indonesian Footballer Falls Into Deep Ditch Celebrating Goal, Video Viral
Football is incomplete without the players performing celebrations after scoring a goal. From Cristiano Ronaldo's 'Siuuu' to Mo Salah's 'bow and arrow' celebration, football is filled with such gestures. While most of them are innocent and cause no harm, an Indonesian footballer took his celebration a touch too far, which could have resulted in serious injuries. In a now-viral video from a match in the Independence Cup 2025, Indonesia U-17 striker Mierza Firjatullah fell into a pit whilst celebrating his goal against Tajikistan U-17 at the North Sumatra Stadium in Deliserdang. The incident transpired in the 34th minute of the match when the 16-year-old scored with a brilliant header. Ecstatic by his strike, Firjatullah ran straight towards the crowd to celebrate and jumped over the advertising hoardings and sprinted beyond the fencing, landing straight into a 10-foot deep pit, next to the fans' enclosure. The players, coaches and stewards immediately ran towards the pit to check if the player was safe or hurt. Fortunately, Firjatullah managed to stick the landing and did not fall awkwardly on his joints or any other delicate body part. After being startled, he could be seen celebrating with the fans. Firjatullah was helped out of the ditch by staff and continued playing briefly before being substituted in the 59th minute. The match ended in a 2-2 draw. See the viral video here: 🚨 Indonesia U-17 player Mierza fell into a 10-foot ditch while celebrating a goal against Tajikistan. The 16-year-old is fine and injury-free 🙏 #soccer #viral #football — MARCA in English 🇺🇸 (@MARCAinENGLISH) August 14, 2025 'If it was offside...' As the video went viral, garnering thousands of views and hundreds of comments, a section of users joked about what would have happened if the referee ruled the goal offside, while others blamed the stadium administration for not putting up taller fencing. "Imagine if the goal was considered offside," said one user, while another added: "This is how I jump to conclusions." A third commented: "He must be an away player. A home player would know their home ground and not jump." A fourth said: "Oh my god! He almost ended his own career. But that fence needs to be build a little higher." The Independence Cup is a four-team tournament held from August 12 to 18, 2025. The four-nation tournament also includes Mali and Uzbekistan.

Independence Cup race kicks off this weekend, giving sailors with disabilities a sense of freedom
Just days after the Race to Mackinac, some other elite sailors from all over the country are getting ready to race. Some of the sailors went on a practice run ahead of the race. "Okay, now I have maximum volume," Tracy Schmitt said. "So, under the boom is an outhaul cleat." There's no salty language, but Schmitt talks like a sailor—because she is one. Mastering the lingo is hardly a challenge for someone who is used to challenges. The sailor from Toronto has more than 40 years of experience on the water. "You know, I'm with no arms, no legs, and Ginny with vision loss, and here we are, we're about to go out by ourselves," she said. Sailors at Burnham Harbor are practicing for this weekend's Independence Cup, featuring three days of boat races on Lake Michigan, sponsored by the Judd Goldman Adaptive Sailing Foundation. On water, differences sailors feel onshore disappear. "I have my little arm here, and that helps me steer. So, I'm better at steering on the port side." Crew members rely on each other's strengths. "So Ginny has many, many years in a keelboat, so she is our keelboat expert. Dan is our muscle. He's got arms and legs and eyes." Schmitt is captain, in charge of strategy and reading the wind. "So, on the water, it's darker ripples, so that's how you can tell where there's wind," she said. She and her crew are among more than 30 competitors in three classes of boats. After a morning of hearing sailors talk, you'll start to feel like one, too. The organizers make ensures there are no barriers for sailors by providing free hotel stays and even specically-designed boats for the competition.
