Markets join festive Independence Day rush

A sea of green and white drapes a street in Rawalpindi's Urdu Bazaar as vendors display a variety of flags, banners, and other patriotic merchandise ahead of Pakistan's Independence Day. PHOTO: AGHA MAHROZ/EXPRESS On the eve of the Independence Day, cities across Pakistan are buzzing with excitement as markets, streets, and homes transform into vibrant displays of green and white. Young people rush to grab Azadi deals, children eagerly choose flags and festive accessories, and women prepare for the occasion with colourful patriotic outfits. According to a report aired by the state news channel, the festive atmosphere has triggered a surge in sales of flags, accessories, and the latest patriotic clothing. "This year, we have seen a huge increase in demand compared to previous years," said a shop owner in a city market. Shoppers share the same enthusiasm. "I love how the whole city comes alive with colours and energy – it makes me proud to celebrate Azadi," said a university student. Citizens from various cities also expressed joy at seeing communities unite to decorate streets and homes, saying the displays "bring the spirit of freedom to life." Retailers in shopping malls, local markets, and online platforms are offering special discounts and bundles to attract customers. Malls are decked out in patriotic colours, while many people decorate their cars with flags and stickers. Roadside stalls overflow with green-and-white merchandise, adding to the lively atmosphere. In Lahore, preparations go beyond clothes and décor. Bakeries and sweet shops are creating Independence Day-themed cakes and treats, with orders for flag-shaped cakes and those inscribed with patriotic messages on the rise. "People love to celebrate with something sweet, and our Azadi cakes have become very popular this year," said a local baker. From Karachi to Quetta, shopkeepers report brisk sales as families prepare for gatherings and parties. "From traditional sweets to custom cakes and festive décor, the excitement is palpable," said a market vendor. The combined energy of booming sales, colourful decorations, and special treats is making this year's Independence Day celebrations among the most vibrant in recent memory, according to citizens in Islamabad. Murree unveils I-Day traffic plan The City Traffic Police (CTP) Murree on Wednesday announced a special traffic plan to facilitate tourists and maintain smooth traffic flow in the hill station during Independence Day celebrations. According to a CTP Murree spokesperson, the arrangements were made on the directives of the Deputy Inspector General (Traffic) Punjab. All traffic from Rawalpindi and Islamabad will enter Murree via the Expressway and RMK GT Road, while travellers heading to Azad Kashmir will be restricted to the Expressway route only.

Lahore dons green and white for 78th dawn of freedom

Minar-e-Pakistan is bathed in the colours of the national flag as part of the preparations for the 78th Independence Day. Photo: NNI As the 78th Independence Day draws near, Lahore is wrapped in a festive embrace of green and white. Streets hum with activity, stalls brim with patriotic trinkets, and preparations for official ceremonies are in full swing. Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has called for wholehearted public participation, singling out youth and children as the torchbearers of what she described as an ongoing "struggle for truth" to protect the nation's freedom. The provincial government's campaign, "From the Acquisition of Independence to the Protection of Independence", has brought a flurry of programmes to Punjab's districts, infusing the build-up with a sense of continuity between past and present. In the heart of the city, Liberty Chowk will pulse with music on Wednesday night (tonight), where the chief minister will join as guest of honour. The concert will be crowned with fireworks, lighting up the summer sky in a cascade of colours. Tomorrow, the centrepiece flag-hoisting ceremony will unfold at Hazuri Bagh under Maryam's watch, followed by a burst of pyrotechnics at Minar-e-Pakistan. The Environment Department, adding its own flair, has organised a "Battle of Truth" bike rally, with safety and traffic arrangements carefully mapped out. From Anarkali to Gulberg, shopfronts, markets, and government buildings shimmer in green fairy lights and fluttering flags. Homes mirror the same pride, their balconies draped in bunting, lights their entrances glowing with electric. Public spaces such as Jilani Park and Minar-e-Pakistan stand ready, polished for the official crowds they will soon welcome. Vendors speak of brisk business. Flag sellers barely keep pace with demand, while badge and sticker stalls attract children who haggle over prices before proudly tucking their purchases into schoolbags. Shopkeepers note that families linger, soaking in the celebratory spirit as they pick up items to adorn their cars, bicycles, and rooftops. Booksellers, too, have joined in, their windows filled with Independence Day-themed books and merchandise that find quick buyers. Retailers have woven patriotism into commerce. "Azadi" sales flash from banners in malls and on websites, offering deep discounts on summer apparel, footwear, gadgets, and accessories. Fashion outlets clear seasonal shelves with markdowns, while eateries and online platforms package the holiday spirit into special offers — a trend that has steadily grown alongside August 14 celebrations. Behind the scenes, coordination has been as meticulous as the public displays are exuberant. At a key meeting chaired by Additional Deputy Commissioner General Lahore, representatives from the Model Town and City Assistant Commissioners, police, PHA, and other departments finalised plans. The ADCG reminded all that Independence Day is the nation's most significant historical marker, urging departments to work seamlessly so that celebrations honour the sacrifices of the country's founders. With the city poised for music, rallies, fireworks, and unbridled public cheer, Lahore is ready to turn August 14 into more than a date on the calendar — a day that blends pride, gratitude, and festivity into a shared moment of national reflection.

Independence Day 2025: Fashion ideas inspired by the Indian tricolour

We are little less than a week away from celebrating India's 79th Independence Day. As preparations get underway for Independence Day-themed events, a topic that is going to be discussed along with tricolour-inspired decor and F&B is what to wear for the dignified occasion. The answer is really simple and subtle: choose the colour that you want to wear from the saffron-white-green and-blue palette. To make things interesting, ensure the outfit is adorned with additional elements like Indian embroidery or tie-and dye. You could also make a quiet statement with accessories in the palette – think statement white shoes, a green tote, or a dupatta or shawl in bright blue. If you need some style cues, Lounge's round up should get you sorted. DIAL SHOW We've picked this watch solely for its bright orange straps, incidentally the signature colour of the luxury house. But that's not it's only winning feature. The Hermès 'Cut" Grand Modèle automatic watch features a 36mm opaline silver dial that is set in a stainless steel case. In addition to the strap, the vivid orange accent appears on the seconds hand and the five-minute markers. Available on ₹7.50 lakh. IN BLOOM Independence Day is the perfect occasion to dust that sari sitting in your closet. Or shop for one that's in eye-catching shades of orange or green. Like this 'Elbrus" silk twill sari from Raw Mango in the stunning shade of gulmohar-orange. The mélange of flowers printed all over and highlighted with hand embroidery makes it a tad more irresistible. Available on ₹30,500. FINE VINE For most men, dressing up for Independence Day celebrations at the workplace is about showing up in a kurta set. While there's nothing wrong with going for a kurta set in a solid colour, it's nice to switch things up by going for outfits that have an elegant print or are tailored in slightly experimental silhouette. This Son of a Noble kurta set in white seems like a safe bet for an I-Day get-together. The slim-fit white kurta with mandarin collar features a delicate print with appliqué detail. And it is paired with an anti-fit, back elastic printed trouser with a side pocket detail. Available on ₹22,000. STRIDE UP Orange can be a tricky colour to wear but when paired right, it can grab all the attention. This pair of rust-orange trousers from Stoique is a straight-up stunner. Designed in a flared and pleated silhouette, the trouser is made in Mysore silk and includes a button and zip closure and side pockets. Sashaying into a room in bright pants never looked better. Available on ₹7,500. EASY MIX If you want to swap saris for a more contemporary look this I-Day, pick an outfit that blends Indo-western elements effortlessly like this ensemble from indie label Reik Studio. The design includes a sleeveless white dress with bandhani print and a green jacket, both made from silk. 'Três chic", as the French would say. Available on ₹30,500. TIGHT KNIT You could sport the tricolour palette by way of accessories as well. Pick a bag like this Eugenia Kim 'Chelsea" tote in Kelly green hue. Crafted using two different stitches and trimmed with leather straps, it would pair perfectly with an all-white dress or an orange sari. Available on ₹34,403. BLUE POP If you love the idea of adding an element of kitsch to your I-day ensemble, pick a striking scarf. Go for a brightly-toned one like this design from Torani that's crafted in handwoven Chanderi fabric and features a lively digital print. Sometimes it's the little touches that make a big difference to your overall look. Available on ₹16,500. GREENING Vests in versatile colours and interesting prints are always a great addition to the wardrobe. The 'Ramatuelle" vest from label Marta Ferri gets our thumbs up. That's because the jacquard-woven vest comes in a relaxed fit and has an abstract pattern that lends a very Indian vibe. We can see it going well with anything from a sleeveless dress, to a tank top or cropped tee-jeans combination. Available on ₹1.65 lakh. BIG STEPPER The coolest way to add a pure white element to your overall look is to wear all-white sneakers. The white 'Ball star" sneakers from cult brand Golden Goose make the cut for us. The shoes are made from scuffed leather that lend them a pre-worn look that the brand is now loved for. The signature star appliqué and perforated detailing at sides are additional features. And because the shoes are handcrafted in Italy, every pair is unique. Available on ₹58,029.
