Golden Gate bridge opens Also, on May 27, 1937, the Golden Gate Bridge opened for the first time to the public. The bridge, which had been under construction for five years, was a massive undertaking. Over 200,000 people came to gape at the 4,200 square foot suspension bridge connecting San Francisco and Marin County. Work on the bridge began on January 5, 1933 – during the Great Depression. A decade had passed after bridge engineer Joseph Strauss had first proposed building a suspension bridge for around $27 million. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Five years after work began, the Golden Gate Bridge was opened on May 27, 1937, becoming the longest bridge span in the world at the time. File image/Reuters Strauss, who was later elected chief engineer of the project, would be ably assisted by consulting engineer Leon S. Moisseiff, architect Irving F Morrow, and others. Moisseiff and Morrow's contributions cannot be understated. After all, it was Moisseiff who convinced Strauss to build a simple suspension bridge. Morrow and his wife Gertrude, meanwhile, developed the look of the bridge. Morrow also aided in choosing the Golden Gate Bridge's famed colour – 'international orange.' But the work came at a cost. In all, 11 men died during the work on the bridge. At the time of its opening, it was the world's longest bridge. It would hold that record till 1964. The Golden Gate Bridge stands to this day as an engineering marvel. Every year, thousands of people from around the world still come to San Francisco to admire it. This Day, That Year 1660: Denmark and Sweden signed the Treaty of Copenhagen, bringing an end to the major conflict between the two powers. The treaty, alongside the Treaty of Roskilde, determined the modern boundaries of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. 1679: England passed the Habeas Corpus law – putting a dent in the right of kings. The law, which translates to 'you shall have the body,' arguably remains the cornerstone of legal jurisprudence for democracies around the world. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 1897: Bram Stoker's 'Dracula' went on sale in London. The Irish writer is said to have based the character on Prince Vlad III of Wallachia – also known as Vlad The Impaler. From Buffy The Vampire Slayer to Blade and Twilight, the hold of vampires on Pop culture has never since waned. 1933: Disney releases its animated movie Three Little Pigs. The whimsical musical, which preceded Walt Disney's masterpiece Snow White by four years, was a major hit and influenced the direction of the entire animation industry for years to come.

Taymour Jumblatt: Adhering to cea sefire resolution, implementing 1701 - the path to preventing Lebanon from being pushed into war furnace

NNA - Progressive Socialist Party head, MP Taymour Jumblatt, believed that "adherence to the ceasefire agreement and the implementation of Resolution 1701 are the only ways to avoid new military conflicts that could push Lebanon back into the throes of war." "This requires an Israeli withdrawal from the points where it remains stationed, so that the state can fully assert its authority," Jumblatt added, emphasizing that the state alone is capable of preventing any security breaches and disruption of the fragile stability in the south. He condemned Israel's continued violations against Lebanon, hoping that the government would "follow through on the steps initiated by the presidency, in terms of strengthening state institutions that guarantee the rights of all Lebanese." Jumblatt's words came during a joint meeting at Al-Mukhtara Palace of the Democratic Gathering and the Progressive Socialist Party's internal representatives, devoted to discussing the general situation, regional and party affairs, and upcoming elections. Attending the meeting were: MPs Marwan Hamadeh, Akram Shehayeb, Bilal Abdallah, Raji Al-Saad, Hadi Abu Al-Hassan, Wael Abu Faour, and PSP's Secretary General Dhafer Nasser, MP Jumblatt's advisor Hussam Harb, and various partisans. On another note, MP Jumblatt received today a delegation from the Independence Movement, headed by MP Michel Moawad, who came to mark the 48th anniversary of the martyrdom of leader Kamal Jumblatt. The visit was in the presence of Democratic Gathering MPs and officials, with talks touching on the general political situation. The delegation then moved to lay a floral wreath on the tomb of Martyr Kamal Jumblatt. In a word of tribute and respect, Moawad said: "We came today to Al-Mukhtara with our friend and former MP Jawad Boulos and a delegation of Independence Movement cadres on this anniversary, which concerns us all: the anniversary of the assassination of leader Kamal Jumblatt. It is, first and foremost, a natural visit, because what connects us to Al-Mukhtara is a relationship that transcends any political consideration, a relationship of martyrdom and a relationship of blood, for the assassination of Kamal Jumblatt laid the foundation for a period of occupation and Syrian guardianship, which expanded with the assassination of President Rene Moawad, leading to the assassination of March 14 figures and Prime Minister Rafik Hariri. At that time, we revolted to expel the Syrians from Lebanon." He added, "This year's anniversary has a special flavor, the flavor of the prevalence of justice with the fall of the Assad regime, the arrest of the person directly responsible for carrying out the assassination of Kamal Jumblatt, and many other incidents that Lebanon has witnessed..." "Today we remember, and at the same time, we stand up for justice," Moawad underlined. It is to note that Jumblatt also met on Saturday with MP Nadim Gemayel, who visited Al-Mukhtara accompanied by a delegation, where they also laid a floral wreath on the shrine of Martyr Kamal Jumblatt. ============

Welcome to first grade

Baesan Elementary School in Suyeong-gu, Busan, celebrated the first day of school for its first grade students on Tuesday, with parents and guardians invited to watch the children reach milestones. Following a long weekend for the March 1 Independence Movement holiday, March 4 marked the start of the school year in South Korea. This year, more than 18,422 children are starting first grade in Busan, about 2,000 fewer than the number of students who enrolled last year. Compared to two years ago, this year's new enrollment marks a decrease of about 4,000, according to the Busan Metropolitan City Office of Education. As the birth rate declines and the population shrinks, more elementary schools in Busan are closing every year. Two elementary schools shut down in the city last month, and 29 schools failed to enroll more than 10 first graders this academic year.

Young voices honor Korea's independence

Seoul is commemorating the 106th anniversary of the March 1st Independence Movement with events across the city, honoring those who fought against Japanese colonial rule. Reenacting history at Seodaemun Prison The main event, "Seodaemun,1919: Echoes of Freedom" (direct translation: "Seodaemun 1919: The Cry of That Day") is taking place at Seodaemun Independence Park and Seodaemun Prison History Hall—once a detention site for Korean independence activists. Participants in period costumes reenact key moments of the movement, including a reading of the March 1st Declaration of Independence and a collective manse (Long live Korean independence!) chant. A 350-meter march from the prison to the Dongnimmun Arch (Independence Gate) recreates the spirit of the historic protests. Visitors can also engage in interactive activities, such as history quizzes and caricature drawing of independence leaders. A special concert at Yonsei University's Centennial Hall on Sunday will round out the commemorations. Citywide tributes and Taegukgi displays In Jung-gu, a month-long exhibition at the district office honors Yu Gwan-sun, a leading female independence activist. A 55-meter-high Taegukgi—the tallest displayed in Seoul—will be raised, while over 100 descendants of independence fighters take part in ceremonies. Seongbuk-gu hosts Secret Resistance Group, an interactive program at Cultural Space Yi Yuksa, allowing participants to transcribe the Declaration of Independence and learn about poet-activist Yi Yuksa.
