IndiGo granted ‘last and final' extension to end agreement with Turkish Airlines
The Union government on Friday gave Indian carrier IndiGo a ' one-time last and final ' three-month extension to end its leasing agreement with Turkish Airlines, reported The Indian Express. IndiGo operates two Boeing 777-300ER aircraft on a damp lease agreement from Turkish Airlines. It uses the aircraft for direct flights from Delhi and Mumbai to Istanbul. Under the agreement, Turkish Airlines supplies the aircraft, crew, maintenance and insurance, while IndiGo handles ticket sales and marketing of the service. The Indian carrier had requested a six-month extension of the agreement, which the Union government rejected. This came against the backdrop of Ankara's support for Islamabad during heightened tensions between India and Pakistan, and amid reports that Pakistan used Turkish-made drones during the conflict. IndiGo was given the three-month extension, which came just a day before the agreement was set to expire, 'based on the undertaking from the airline that they will terminate the lease with Turkish Airlines within this extension period, and shall not seek any further extension for these operations', a senior official of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation was quoted as saying by The Indian Express. The two airlines had signed the damp lease agreement in 2023. IndiGo also has a codeshare agreement with Turkish Airlines since 2018. A codeshare agreement allows airlines to sell seats on each other's flights. This allows airlines to offer flights to destinations they do not directly operate, expanding their network and customer base without increasing their fleet. Amid worsening India-Turkey relations, IndiGo had stated that its agreements with Turkish Airlines are fully aligned with Indian laws and regulations, The Indian Express reported. 'If there are any changes in the framework, we will naturally adjust our operations to stay aligned,' IndiGo Chief Executive Officer Pieter Elbers said earlier in the day, according to Business Standard.

Amid Tensions, Turkey Earns Praise In NITI Aayog Report For Skill Development In MSMEs
Last Updated: Despite strained India-Turkey relations, a NITI Aayog report highlights Turkey's KOSGEB as a model for India's SMEs, emphasising skill development and inclusive support. Even as diplomatic and economic ties between India and Turkey continue to fray, a NITI Aayog report on Monday highlighted Turkey as a model for India's small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to emulate, particularly in the field of skill development. In its latest policy report titled 'Designing a Policy for Medium Enterprises', the government think tank listed programmes of Turkey in addition to Canada, Singapore and Australia for encouraging medium enterprises in India. The NITI Aayog report recommended adopting strategies similar to those pioneered by Turkey's 'KOSGEB' (Small and Medium Enterprises Development Organisation), drawing attention to its innovative online entrepreneurship training programs and inclusive support for women, youth, and persons with disabilities. The report also noted that Turkey's e-Academy (a digital training platform) offered subsidised courses to enhance access for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) across different regions. Drawing inspiration from these models, the report said, 'KOSGEB provides distance training on entrepreneurship; an effective, easy and flexible entrepreneurship training without time and space constraints by E-Akademi Programme … Entrepreneurship Support Programme, with preferential treatment for women, youth and handicapped entrepreneurs." Turkey has been facing a backlash in India after its vocal support for Pakistan during Operation Sindoor, a military response to the Pahalgam terror attack that took place in April this year in which 26 tourists were killed. Yet, the NITI Aayog report paints a markedly different picture, when it comes to commerce. Alongside countries like Canada, Singapore, and Australia, Turkey is listed as a benchmark nation in fostering a robust ecosystem for medium-sized enterprises. The report singled out the Turkish e-academy platform operated by KOSGEB, which offers flexible, remote training programs tailored to entrepreneurial needs – an approach the think tank suggests India would do well to adopt, especially for marginalised communities. Beyond the Turkish reference, the NITI Aayog document also laid out several ambitious reforms for India's medium enterprises. Among the recommendations were a turnover-based working capital financing scheme, the issuance of business credit cards with limits up to Rs 5 crore at market rates, and the establishment of a rapid loan disbursement system supervised by the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME). According to NITI Aayog, MSMEs contribute approximately 29% to the country's GDP, account for 40% of exports, and employ over 60% of the national workforce. To unlock further potential, the think tank has called for the formation of a dedicated research and development cell within the MSME Ministry, aimed at leveraging the Atmanirbhar Bharat Fund to support cluster-based projects of strategic importance. The report also suggested the upgradation of existing technology centres into sector-specific and regionally customised India SME 4.0 Competence Centres to promote the adoption of Industry 4.0 solutions.

Karnataka HC stays case against Amit Malviya, Arnab Goswami for ‘Congress office in Turkey' claim
The Karnataka High Court on Thursday stayed a criminal case against Bharatiya Janata Party's social media cell chief Amit Malviya and Republic TV's Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami for falsely claiming that the Istanbul Congress Center is an office of the Indian National Congress, Bar and Bench reported. The building shown in a Republic TV news segment on May 15 is the Istanbul Congress Center, a convention venue owned by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, Alt News reported. The Bengaluru Police had booked Malviya and Goswami on Tuesday on a complaint by the Indian Youth Congress' legal cell head, Shrikant Swaroop BN. The first information report was registered under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita pertaining to wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot and intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace. The complainant alleged that the claim was made 'with clear and undeniable criminal intent to deceive the Indian public, defame a major political institution, manipulate nationalist sentiments, incite public unrest, and undermine national security and democratic integrity'. The Indian Youth Congress further noted that the claims were made in the context of tense India-Turkey relations due to Ankara's support for Pakistan during heightened tensions between New Delhi and Islamabad after Operation Sindoor. Although the Indian National Congress had announced plans in 2019 to open an overseas office in Istanbul and appointed Mohammad Yusuf Khan to lead it, there have been no updates since, and Turkey is not listed on the Indian Overseas Congress website, Alt News noted. Republic TV said on Tuesday that the image was mistakenly used by a video editor on the digital desk due to a 'technical error'. The Congress, however, said that an apology was not sufficient as redressal for the error. A separate case was also filed against Malviya for allegedly posting an image of a face, half of which was that of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and the other half of Pakistani Army chief Asim Munir, Bar and Bench reported. It included a caption that purportedly alluded to whether Gandhi was echoing Pakistan's narrative. Malviya, who is the BJP's social media cell chief, filed a petition to quash this case as well, according to Bar and Bench. During the hearing on Thursday, advocate Aruna Shyam, representing Goswami, said that the Republic TV editor-in-chief had aired a programme on his channel where he had claimed that Turkey was against our national interest. 'Why does the political party have to have an office in that country?' Live Law quoted Shyam as saying. 'That was his opinion expressed in a news channel.' The advocate added that the same content was published online, 'where inadvertently a picture was posted of the political parties office but that was not the actual picture of the party'. He said that a junior editor had posted it and that the news channel immediately issued a clarification. 'Absolutely there is no case made out,' Shyam told the court. Also representing Malviya, Shyam said that the complaints against the BJP leader were politically motivated and baseless, Bar and Bench reported. The advocate claimed that the complaint filed on Malviya's post with an edited photo of Gandhi initially cited offences under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita pertaining to intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace. He added that this was a bailable offence. However, this was later tampered with when the police approached the jurisdictional magistrate and an offence dealing with statements conducing to public mischief was added, Shyam alleged, adding that this was not a bailable offence. 'That is how politically, petitioners have been targeted,' Bar and Bench quoted Shyam as saying. The counsel for the state government, however, told the court that Malviya and Goswami had only been served notices. The investigation should be allowed to proceed, he added. 'Let them cooperate with the investigation,' Bar and Bench quoted the counsel as saying. 'We will see information has been disseminated, and what context.' After the Congress announced that the case had been filed, Malviya posted a clip
