Box Office tide turns as small films make big waves

Compared to 2024, there is a reduced reliance on big-ticket blockbusters, with a greater number of films crossing the ₹100 crore mark. "The share of the top 10 films in the overall Jan-Jun box office has declined from 44% in 2024 to 39% in 2025, a sign of broader participation across titles.""The language-wise distribution of ₹100 crore-plus films is also healthier in 2025. For instance, while 2024 had no Tamil film in this category, 2025 has seen three Tamil films cross the mark, increasing Tamil cinema's contribution from 12% in 2024 to 17% in the Jan-Jun 2025 period," he said. "Additionally, Hollywood has seen significant growth, with its Jan-Jun box office collections nearly doubling compared to the same period in 2024." However, defying those predictions, a new report reveals that the Indian box office collected a staggering ₹ 5,723 crore in the first half of 2025, marking a 14% year-on-year growth. While several underdog films emerged as surprise hits at the ticket window, one film stands out as the highest-grossing Indian film of the year so far — Chhaava. This film, despite being mired in controversy, continued its theatrical run for nearly two months. Its success was so massive that the Hindi film was eventually dubbed and released in Telugu as well. It also had 24-hour running shows owing to its demand among the audience. India's highest-grosser of 2025 so far is Chhaava. Chhaava stars Vicky Kaushal in the lead as Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. It also features Rashmika Mandanna and Akshaye Khanna. The film is based on the life of Sambhaji Maharaj, the second ruler of the Maratha Empire. Coming in next on the list is the Telugu-language film Sankranthiki Vasthunam, headlined by Daggubati Venkatesh, which recorded impressive nationwide earnings of ₹ 222 crore. Sitaare Zameen Par ( ₹ 201 crore) Housefull 5 ( ₹ 200 crore) Good Bad Ugly ( ₹ 183 crore) Game Changer ( ₹ 153 crore) L2: Empuraan ( ₹ 126 crore) June alone added over ₹ 900 crore to the year's box office total. 'The cumulative box office for Jan–Jun releases stands at ₹ 5,723 crore, which is 14 per cent higher than the same period in 2024 and just ₹ 12 crore short of the 2022 record for Jan–Jun box office,' the report mentioned. Coming to the success of Chhaava, the Vicky Kaushal film released on February 14, 2025. The film continued to run in theatres until March 21, 2025, marking its 36th day. As per multiple reports, the film held 24-hour screenings in Maharashtra due to high demand. Reportedly, 6 am and midnight shows were added for the film right after its release, recording about 97% occupancy. A little less than a month after its release, Chhaava also released a Telugu dubbed version in theatres to keep up with the demand. Later, the film made its OTT debut on Netflix on April 11.

So far in 2025, the box office has seen fewer big-ticket blockbusters, with only one film crossing the ₹250 crore mark. Instead, the momentum has been driven by a steady stream of mid- to high-performing titles that grossed over ₹100 crore. The highest-earning film of 2025 so far has been 'Chhaava', a historical action-drama headlined by actor Vicky Kaushal, which grossed a staggering ₹693 crore. It is followed by 'Sankranthiki Vasthunam', a Telugu-language film starring Daggubati Venkatesh. The movie also posted strong nationwide numbers. The month of June alone contributed over ₹900 crore to the half-year tally, with Hindi films 'Sitaare Zameen Par' and 'Housefull 5' emerging as the top grossers of the month, each grossing close to ₹200 crore, according to the report. Tamil-Telugu bilingual 'Kuberaa' and 'F1', Hollywood's Formula One title with Brad Pitt, were also among the top contributors for the month. And this week's Saiyaara directed by Mohit Suri, starring Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda, could be the next blockbuster from Bollywood going by the collections. The report noted that if the current trajectory continues, 2025 could close at a record ₹13,500 crore, making it the highest-grossing year ever for the Indian theatrical market. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD It, however, hinges on the box office performance of several major titles scheduled for release in the second half of the year. These include Rishab Shetty's 'Kantara: Chapter 1'; 'War 2', starring Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR; Rajinikanth's 'Coolie', 'Akhanda 2', featuring Nandamuri Balakrishna, Ayushmann Khurrana's 'Thama', and 'OG', starring Pawan Kalyan. The report also highlighted that Hindi cinema continued to dominate with a 40 per cent share of the total collections, followed by Telugu and Tamil . Hollywood has reclaimed a double-digit share for the first time since 2022, signalling a resurgence in international content consumption in Indian cinemas.
