The show goes on as Rohit Bal's team keeps the dream and his designs alive
Kashmir, Rohit Bal's homeland, came alive in New Delhi on July 28 as his label took a step forward months after the late designer's death, unfolding a new chapter in the history of Indian bloomed, peacocks returned in their full plumage and Kashida embroidery lit up Bal's signature black and ivory ensembles - a true reflection of his design language he upheld over the years. But this time, the designer watched it all from the the first collection unveiled since his passing, was presented by the team carrying his legacy forward. Fittingly, it drew from Kashmir - Bal's eternal inspiration - and its beautiful flowers (gul), taking center stage at the ongoing Hyundai India Couture Week 2025, a Fashion Design Council of India initiative. A new era begins for the label Rohit Bal with its first collection showcase at India Couture Week 2025, following the designer's passing in November 2024. As his mainstay silhouettes like anarkalis, bandhgalas, sherwanis, and achkans with voluminous skirts - all cut in his unmatched sharp tailoring - took over the runway, crafted from Rohit Bal's beloved fabrics like velvet, muslin, and matka silk, one thing became clear: as expected, the team is committed to preserving his design language and label is now helmed by Fraze Tasnim, chosen by Bal himself to carry forward the brand's legacy. Tasnim began working with Bal in 2011, took a hiatus to pursue an MBA and gain business acumen, and eventually returned as a senior designer. Team Rohit Bal presents 'Kash-Gul' at India Couture Week 2025. In an exclusive conversation with India Today Digital, the designer shared his plans in keeping the label – that employs 400 people – alive.'It is a responsibility to carry forward his legacy as per his style. We are trying our best to maintain that. The aim is to keep the soul (of the label) alive. As per the design language also, we will keep that going. We will add some new stuff, but the soul will be Rohit's,' Tasnim said. Arjun Rampal with Ayaz ul Haq (left) and Fraze Tasnim (right) - the ones spearheading Rohit Bal's legacy. Rohit Bal's death in November 2024 left the fashion fraternity in deep shock, creating an unfillable void. The designer had been battling health issues for several years. His maverick persona and zestful approach to life kept him going - so much so that a visibly ill Bal even grooved on stage during his final show, which featured Ananya Panday as the as the OG socialite, full of life and humour, and famous for throwing the most extravagant parties, Bal built strong and lasting friendships. As his label now takes a 'step forward' without him, the fashion fraternity turned up in full strength. Like they always did when he was still alive. Arjun Rampal turned showstopper in a regal black sherwani. His team, meanwhile, left no stone unturned in putting together a memorable show. Ivory - Bal's favourite colour - set the tone for the evening, as the show opened on a subtle note with models walking down the ramp in his signature ivory ensembles, accompanied by a Kashmiri song playing in the background. Bright red roses adorning the models' hair felt like a heartfelt nod to Bal and the legacy he built over decades. From velveteen lehengas adorned with rich golden zardozi and intricate floral patterns to a colour palette of ivory, black, and burgundy - the Kash-Gul collection brought together all the signature elements of Rohit Bal. advertisementThe show eventually took on a more jovial tone, as opulent black ensembles and Bal's signature red creations took over the runway, while the live music transformed into a foot-tapping team roped in his trusted industry friends — scenographer Sumant Jayakrishnan, show director Aparna Bahl Bedi, and photographer Gautam Kalra - to come together and create an unforgettable night that marked the beginning of a new a new era for the Rohit Bal label begins, it is not merely a cut-copy-paste of the past. Fresh design elements such as houndstooth patterns and leather have been subtly introduced to evolve the brand's design language. Houndstooth introduced to label Rohit Bal's design language. advertisementAyaz Ul Haq, who has been associated with Bal and his label since 2005 and works closely with the design team, told India Today that the idea was to explore new territory while staying true to Bal's legacy.'That's why we've retained familiar silhouettes - ivory, long jackets, flowing outfits,' Haq marks a rare moment in Indian fashion: a legacy brand being carried forward by its handpicked successors. The team has ambitious expansion plans ahead, including new store launches at Delhi's high street Dhan Mill and in Hyderabad, as well as an upcoming exhibition in Paris.- EndsTrending Reel

JJ Valaya Closes India Couture Week 2025 With A Majestic Ode To The East
Last Updated: JJ Valaya's grand finale at India Couture Week 2025 was a regal tribute to the East, blending heritage, mystique, and modern craftsmanship to celebrate his 33-year legacy. Hyundai India Couture Week 2025 concluded on a high note in New Delhi on July 30, with master couturier JJ Valaya presenting a grand finale that was equal parts theatrical, nostalgic, and deeply rooted in craftsmanship. Celebrating an illustrious 33 years in fashion, Valaya's closing showcase, aptly titled 'East," brought down the curtain on this year's edition with regal flair and reflective grandeur. Unfolding like a rich cultural tapestry, the 60-piece collection drew inspiration from the layered aesthetics of Eastern India, as well as the romanticised lens through which the West once viewed the East including the mysticism of India, the Balkans, and the Far East. The result was an opulent interplay of silks, velvets, brocades, and organzas, executed in Valaya's signature maximalist style, baroque, intricate, and steeped in storytelling. The show opened with theatrical finesse, as monks glided down the ramp in a scene that evoked spiritual stillness and timeless tradition. Anchored by Rajiv Makhni's lighthearted monologue, the evening maintained an engaging rhythm, seamlessly blending the classical with the contemporary. Midway through, a spellbinding Kathak performance added a poetic interlude to the runway, elevating the couture showcase to an immersive cultural experience. Valaya's set design matched the drama of his garments, grand terracotta elephants stood sentinel over the runway, evoking temple architecture and the opulence of royal courts. The casting was as compelling as the clothes. Among those who walked were Indian cricketer Abhishek Sharma, and actors Rahul Dev and Mugdha Godse, who brought a starry energy to the show. But the finale belonged to Rasha Thadani and Ibrahim Ali Khan, who closed the event with youthful poise and royal allure. Rasha Thadani wore a midnight black lehenga choli intricately embroidered with traditional motifs, featuring a pronounced border and a draped dupatta with subtle striped accents. Her look was styled with minimal yet striking jewellery, a diamond bracelet and rings that added just the right sparkle. top videos View all Ibrahim Ali Khan complemented the regal aesthetic in a structured black sherwani with a high collar and front placket, worn over a relaxed patiala-style salwar. The tonal styling underscored his stately presence while nodding to traditional silhouettes with a modern edge. More than a finale, JJ Valaya's 'East" was a deeply personal tribute to three decades of artistry. It reaffirmed his place not just as a couturier, but as a cultural archivist, someone who continues to mine the past with imagination and finesse, and reinterprets it for the present with relevance and reverence. In a dreamlike finale, JJ Valaya celebrates 33 years of couture with Rasha Thadani and Ibrahim Ali Khan
JJ Valaya's 'East' at India Couture Week 2025 marked his 33rd year with a cinematic tribute to Eastern mystique. The 60-look collection featured rich velvets, brocades, and intricate embroidery, set against a majestic backdrop with terracotta elephants. Kathak dancers enhanced the show's poetic feel. Celebrities Rasha Thadani and Ibrahim Ali Khan closed the show, captivating the audience. There are fashion shows, and then there are moments that stay with you long after the runway empties. JJ Valaya 's grand finale at India Couture Week 2025 was the latter, a deeply cinematic celebration that felt more like a cultural tapestry unfolding in real time than a traditional runway event. Held in the capital, the show didn't just mark the end of Couture Week, it marked 33 years of Valaya's journey in Indian fashion. And for a designer who has always celebrated heritage with a regal lens, this was a fitting crescendo. Titled 'East', the 60-look collection was Valaya's tribute to the way the West once imagined the mystery and magic of the East, spanning the Far East, the Balkans, and India. But this wasn't just about nostalgia or exoticism. It was a collection rooted in storytelling, craftsmanship, and a designer's ability to transport you somewhere beyond fabric and form. The set was nothing short of majestic: towering terracotta elephants, moody lighting, and a runway that looked like it had been lifted out of a royal court. The show opened with monks walking solemnly down the ramp - a powerful, almost meditative start. And then came the clothes: rich velvets, shimmering brocades, diaphanous organzas layered with intricate embroidery. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Why Your Current Make-Up Routine Might Be Aging You Learn More Undo Every piece felt like a love letter to another time, reimagined for today. There was an underlying sense of quiet luxury. The kind of opulence that doesn't shout, but lingers in the way a sleeve falls or how a belt cinches the waist just so. Valaya's signature details - regal headpieces, statement belts, those timeless jackets were all there, grounding the collection in his unmistakable aesthetic. And just when you thought the show couldn't get more poetic, Kathak dancers glided onto the ramp mid-way. The music softened, and for a few breathtaking minutes, fashion and classical dance merged to create a moment that was both intimate and grand. Among the celebrity appearances were cricketer Abhishek Sharma and actors Rahul Dev and Mugdha Godse, but it was the closing pair, Rasha Thadani and Ibrahim Ali Khan, who stole the spotlight. Rasha, in a black lehenga choli with a rich, intricate border, looked like she had stepped out of a modern-day miniature painting. Her diamond accessories were minimal, letting the craftsmanship of her ensemble shine. Ibrahim brought old-school elegance with a contemporary spin, his black sherwani and Patiala-style salwar exuded a quiet charm that felt both rooted and cool. But beyond the stars and silhouettes, what stood out most was the feeling Valaya left us with. The kind of show that doesn't rely on spectacle for applause, but instead builds a world you don't want to leave. It's rare to find a designer who knows how to create both reverence and relevance but that's always been Valaya's gift. He doesn't just dress bodies. He builds stories. As the final model walked off and the music faded, there was a pause, almost like the audience didn't want to let go just yet. After 33 years in the business, JJ Valaya isn't just showing us couture. He's showing us what it means to stay true to your voice in a world that changes constantly. And with East, he didn't just end the couture week. He elevated it.
