Video of flag vendor beating in Bangladesh falsely shared as incident in India
A video of a vendor selling Bangladeshi flags being beaten up by a uniformed man has circulated in social media posts that falsely claim the incident took place in India's West Bengal state. The clip has in fact circulated in Bangladeshi media reports about a flag seller who was beaten by a soldier during a football match in the capital Dhaka on June 10, 2025. The 12-second clip of a uniformed man hitting another man carrying a bundle of flags was shared on Facebook on June 15, with the Hindi-language caption praising an Indian Border Security Force (BSF) soldier for the "treatment given to a Bangladeshi flag seller in West Bengal". "There should be restrictive action against traitors who live in India and hoist the flags of enemy nations Pakistan, Bangladesh and Palestine. Action should also be taken against those who make and sell these flags," adds the caption. The clip surfaced on Facebook and X as India deported hundreds of people to Bangladesh without trial, officials on both sides said, drawing condemnation from activists and lawyers who call the recent expulsions illegal and based on ethnic profiling (archived link). New Delhi says the people deported are undocumented migrants. However, the move has triggered fear among India's estimated 200 million Muslims, especially among speakers of Bengali, a widely spoken language in both eastern India and Bangladesh. Bangladesh, largely encircled by land by India, has seen relations with New Delhi turn icy since a mass uprising in 2024 toppled Dhaka's government that was led by Sheikh Hasina, an Indian ally. However, the clip was filmed in the Bangladesh capital Dhaka, not India. A reverse image search on Google using keyframes from clip found it used in a news report published on the verified YouTube channel of Bangladeshi news portal Dhaka Post on June 12, 2025 (archived link). The Bengali-language report is titled, "Army gifts 100,000 Bangladeshi Taka (US$824) to a flag seller injured in baton charge". The report states the Bangladeshi army compensated the flag seller after he was hit by a soldier who was attempting to control crowds during a football match between Bangladesh and Singapore on June 10. The same video was also used by Bangladeshi media outlet News1 TV in its report about the flag seller's compensation, while another local outlet Jugantor reported the beating took place as soldiers tried to push back crowds -- some without tickets -- who tried to rush the gates of the stadium (archived links here and here). The army described it as an "unintentional and isolated incident", the reports added.

India to conduct mock drills along Pakistan's border
An Indian Border Security Force (BSF) soldier patrols near the fenced border with Pakistan. PHOTO: REUTERS / FILE Listen to article Four Indian states along the Pakistan border are set to conduct large-scale civil defence mock drills from Thursday (today) just weeks after a ceasefire was brokered following military escalation. According to Indian media quoting authorities, mock drills will be conducted in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), Punjab and Gujarat on Thursday evening. The Haryana government has also announced a state-wide emergency preparedness exercise titled "Operation Shield," scheduled today across all 22 districts from 5pm (local time) onwards, aimed at enhancing readiness in the event of a crisis. The drill, being organised under the guidance of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), will simulate critical incidents such as air raids, drone attacks, and other wartime scenarios in the wake of national security concerns, as per the Indian media. Additionally, a controlled blackout of 15 minutes will be observed from 8pm to 8.15pm near vital installations, with the exception of essential emergency services such as hospitals, fire stations, and police stations. Home Department Haryana Additional Chief Secretary Dr Sumita Misra said, "The exercise aims to test existing emergency mechanisms, improve coordination between the civil administration, defence forces, and local communities, and identify areas that need to be strengthened, thus ensuring swift and effective response during any crisis." Earlier, a statewide mock drill was conducted on May 7 shortly after India launched airstrikes in Pakistan, which hit civilian populations including mosques, claiming lives of 26 civilians.

Indian troops shoot dead Pakistani
Indian Border Security Force soldiers patrol along the India-Pakistan border fence about 27 KM from Wagah on January 13, 2013. PHOTO: AFP Listen to article Indian border troops shot dead a Pakistani man who they said had crossed the international frontier and did not stop when challenged, the force said Saturday. The shooting comes two weeks after arch-rivals India and Pakistan agreed a ceasefire after a four-day conflict, in which more than 70 people were killed in missile, drone and artillery fire. India's Border Security Force (BSF) said its troops Friday evening had spotted "one suspicious person advancing towards the border fence", which lies beyond the international frontier in Gujarat state's Banaskantha district. "They challenged the intruder, but he continued to advance, prompting them to open fire", the BSF said in a statement. "The intruder was neutralised on the spot". A photograph released by the force showed a dead man with greying hair. The recent conflict between the nuclear-armed rivals was triggered by an attack on tourists in Pahalgam on April 22, the deadliest on civilians in the contested Muslim-majority territory in decades.

Pakistan, India agree on phased de-escalation
Listen to article Pakistan and India agreed on "structured mechanism for stage-wise de-escalation," announced the Foreign Office on Friday Foreign Office spokesperson Shafqat Ali Khan termed the recent announcement of Pakistan-India ceasefire a positive development. "We urge India to adhere faithfully to its implementation," he told the media while addressing his weekly news conference. "We once again appreciate the constructive role played by friendly countries in facilitating the ceasefire. We also reiterate our support for President Trump's announcement on engaging with Pakistan and India to seek a resolution to the Jammu and Kashmir dispute," the spokesperson said. "Let me clarify: the ceasefire was achieved through the facilitation of several friendly nations. Against this backdrop, India's portrayal of Pakistan as acting out of "despair and frustration" is entirely baseless. The facts speak for themselves." The spokesperson said the Directors General of Military Operations of Pakistan and India maintained periodic contact since 10 May. Both sides have agreed on a structured mechanism for phased de-escalation, he said. As a goodwill gesture, Pakistan handed over an Indian Border Security Force (BSF) constable on 14 May 2025. In return, India released a sepoy of the Pakistan Rangers. He further said at a time when the international community is actively promoting regional peace and stability, India's rhetoric reflects a persistent tendency to distort facts, justify aggression, and cast unwarranted aspersions on Pakistan's nuclear assets. In contrast, Pakistan, as a responsible state, remains committed to the ceasefire and to taking necessary steps toward de-escalation and regional stability. The spokesperson said Pakistan is a sovereign nation with resilient institutions, a committed populace, and a globally recognized role in maintaining peace and security. "Our commitment to peace must never be mistaken for weakness. Any future aggression will also be met with full resolve. We hope India will prioritize regional stability and the well-being of its citizens over narrow, politically motivated jingoism." He said Pakistan firmly believes in peaceful coexistence. "We prioritise dialogue and diplomacy over conflict and confrontation. We have consistently advocated for meaningful engagement and result-oriented dialogue to resolve all outstanding issues, including the core dispute of Jammu and Kashmir. A just and peaceful settlement of these disputes remains indispensable for lasting peace in South Asia." Zangnan issue Pakistan on Friday reiterated its support for China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, following Beijing's reaffirmation of its position on Zangnan, also known as Arunachal Pradesh. During his weekly press briefing, Foreign Office spokesperson Shafqat Ali Khan stated that Pakistan "fully supports the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the People's Republic of China," and had noted recent reports regarding China's stance on the region. The statement comes amid renewed tensions between India and China over the disputed territory, which Beijing refers to as Zangnan. He accused New Delhi of destabilising the regional security environment with its "aggressive posture". Khan dismissed Indian media reports alleging nuclear radiation linked to recent border tensions as "baseless and unfounded." He said Pakistan's military operations under Operation Bunyanum Marsoos, were a response to cross-border aggression and carried out in self-defence. "Our response was in line with our right to self-defence [under Article 51 of the UN Charter] and aimed at preserving national sovereignty," Khan said. Punjab also marked a significant achievement under Operation Bunyanum Marsoos with tributes and commemorative events. Khan welcomed the recent ceasefire agreement between the two sides and urged India to uphold its commitments. "We view this as a positive step and expect India to implement the ceasefire in both letter and spirit," he said.
