Demonstration unit of precision farming technology inaugurated at JSS Krishi Vigyan Kendra
A demonstration unit of the 'Precision Farming Technology' was inaugurated at JSS Krishi Vigyan Kendra in Suttur. In a press statement issued on Saturday, senior scientist and head of JSS Krishi Vigyan Kendra Gyanesh B.N. stated that the demonstration of precision agriculture technology will help farmers use agricultural resources such as water and fertilisers efficiently. Farmers can visit the JSS Krishi Vigyan Kendra at Suttur, which is accredited by the Indian Council for Agricultural Research, and gather information about the demonstration unit. At the inaugural programme, administrator of JSS institutions, Suttur, S.P. Udayashankar, said the Vigyan Kendra has been providing training and demonstrations at the farmers' agricultural fields, besides various extension services have been provided for the last 30 years, he said. On the occasion, agricultural equipment was also distributed to farmers belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. Director of ICAR's Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute (ATARI) zone 11, Bengaluru, V. Subramanian, who was the chief guest of the programme, said India was dependent on other countries for food production before it attained freedom. Now, it has not only achieved self-reliance in all areas of agriculture, but also exports farm produce to foreign countries. The Centre was providing seeds and saplings for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe farmers, he said, while adding that the various agriculture equipment too had been provided to the JSS Krishi Vigyan Kendra and interested farmers can take advantage of the same by renting it, he said. Executive Secretary of JSS Mahavidyapeetha, Mysuru, C.G. Betsurmath, who presided over the function, regretted that young farmers were quitting agriculture and were becoming city dwellers. Lamenting that agricultural land was being converted into residential layouts, Mr. Betsurmath said the conversion of farmland into layouts was leading to a decline in agricultural land, which threatens to bring down food production in future. Hence, he appealed to young rural farmers not to abandon agriculture but to remain in the field and achieve success. He called upon the young farmers to seek technical advice related to agriculture at the JSS Krishi Vigyan Kendra. Mr. Gyanesh said a farmers' camp has been organised at the JSS Krishi Vigyan Kendra in Suttur from May 3 to 5 and appealed to interested farmers to participate in the camp.
