Himachal transport department earns Rs 1,236.53 cr in 16 months
Agency: Shimla, Aug 8 (PTI) The Himachal Pradesh's Department of Transport has achieved a new milestone as it has earned a revenue of Rs 1,236.53 crore in the last 16 months, said Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri on Friday. The department has earned Rs 912.18 crore during the fiscal 2024-25 and Rs 324.35 crore during the first four months of FY26, i.e. April to July, 2025. Agnihotri, in a statement issued here, said that this achievement could be credited to the success of the implementation of the policies, and dedication and hard-work of the entire administration. He said that the transport department was not limited to its operations on the roads, but is a strong pillar that shapes and speeds up the economic progress of the state. 'The department focused and prioritised upon departmental transparency, much needed improvement in the technical system of tax collection and digitalisation of public services. The revenue receipts are the result of these positive steps" he said. 'During the fiscal 2024-25, the department earned Rs 160.28 crore revenue trough permit fee, licence fee and penalties under Indian Motor Vehicle Act. Similarly, under State Motor Vehicle Act, a revenue of Rs 712.82 crore was earned through token tax, composite fees, special registration charges, SRT and green tax. Additionally, Rs 39.08 crore was earned through green tax and various other fee," he said. 'In the first four months of fiscal 2025-26 till July, 2025, Rs 63.09 crore was earned through Indian Motor Vehicle Act, Rs 250.01 crore trough State Motor Vehicle Act and Rs 11.25 crore through other sources. 'As per the officers of the department, the revenue collection could reach well above Rs 1,000 crore till the end of the year" said the Deputy CM. He further said that various reforms, including technically strengthening the department, were being introduced, making services like vehicle registration, grant of permit, tax deposit and various processes of monitoring online ensuring transparency. 'This has resulted in drastic fall in fraudulent activities and accessibility of services at the doorstep of public," he added. Bengaluru: Farmer imprisoned for a day for giving sports bike to minor leading to accident
Bengaluru: In a first-of-its-kind judgment in recent times, a court in Gubbi (Tumakuru district) sentenced a farmer to one-day imprisonment with a fine of Rs 30,000 for having handed over his sports motorbike to a minor boy, who met with an accident and sustained serious injuries. The convicted is Narasimha Raju N, a resident of Chikkabelave, CS Pura, Gubbi. He was kept in confinement at a lock-up in the premises of Gubbi court complex on June 30. Judge D Anupama also imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 on Narasimha Raju and Rs 5,000 on his son, Ravi Kumar, as it was Kumar who handed over the motorbike to his friend, a 17-year-old boy, on the night of Oct 31, 2024. The case was investigated and chargesheet was filed by Gubbi police led by SI Sunil Kumar GK, who arraigned three persons — Narasimha Raju N, N Ravi Kumar, and the minor — as accused in the case. A few days after the accident, the minor's father filed a complaint with Gubbi police, and based on his statement, the police booked the three under the Indian Motor Vehicle Act and sections 281 (Rash driving or riding on a public way) and 125 (Act endangering life or personal safety of others) of BNS. The minor's case was transferred to a juvenile court. The minor told Ravi Kumar that he would accompany him while riding back home, 35km away. "When both started, the minor rode the motorbike with Ravi as a pillion. On reaching Gubbi, the minor, who was riding at high speed, lost control and rammed into a mud heap outside the compound of a private college on the left side of the road. The minor sustained injuries to his eyes, waist, and head. Ravi escaped with minor wounds. The minor was first treated at Gubbi govt hospital and was later shifted to a private hospital in Tumakuru. Owing to the seriousness of his eye injuries, the minor was shifted to Minto Hospital in Bengaluru. There too, doctors advised the minor's family to immediately shift the boy to a superspeciality hospital as he required to undergo complicated surgery," the police charge sheet read.

Kalaburagi police amp up vigilance to ensure safety of schoolchildren plying in autorickshaws
Kalaburagi: Kalaburagi city police's initiative to ensure student safety has intensified with strict enforcement measures. The police observed that many autorickshaw drivers tend to overload their vehicles with schoolchildren during peak hours, particularly during the morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up times. Speaking to TOI, Kalaburagi city police commissioner Sharanappa SD emphasised that this practice poses serious risks to children's safety. The special drive yielded significant results, with enforcement teams stationed at key locations near schools. Traffic officers are conducting regular checks during school timings to prevent overcrowding in school transport vehicles. He said 19 cases were registered by the Traffic Police Station-1 against autorickshaws for violating traffic rules by taking schoolchildren beyond the prescribed number of seats, and a fine of Rs 8,400 was imposed. Both police stations collectively registered 42 cases, involving 40 autorickshaws and 2 school vehicles, under the Indian Motor Vehicle Act, with total fine amounting to Rs 9,900. The police issued guidelines stating that autorickshaws should carry only the permitted number of students. They also mandated that every school transport vehicle must display emergency contact numbers and carry a first-aid kit. Parents are being advised to ensure their children travel only in authorised school transport vehicles. Local school authorities have been instructed to maintain proper records of vehicles ferrying their students. The police have also established a helpline number for citizens to report any violations of these safety norms. Regular awareness sessions are being conducted for autorickshaw drivers about the importance of following safety protocols. DCP Praveen H Naik directed traffic police to maintain vigilance, particularly during school hours. The police are also working with school management committees to create a database of authorised school transport providers. The enforcement drive will continue throughout the academic year, with periodic reviews of its effectiveness. Police have urged parents and school authorities to cooperate in this initiative by reporting any violations they observe. Regular monitoring of school zones during peak hours will be carried out to ensure compliance with safety regulations. This coordinated effort aims to establish a safer transport system for schoolchildren in Kalaburagi city.
